The road

I actually really liked the road, and I was surprised how much the movie depicted the book. Most of the time the movies and books aren’t that similar. Sometimes they add or sometimes they leave out lots of key factors but overall the movie was pretty close to the book. My favorite character was the son, even thought their wasn’t much to choose from. The son to me represented, love, compassion and grace. And the son reminded the father to always show kindness to people who don’t always deserve it. For example, when the guy at the beach steals all their food and belonging, the father makes him takes off all his clothes and basically leaves him for dead. But the son con nieces the father to turn around and give him his clothes back. The son shows that guy who stole their belonging grace, by trying to give him his clothes back. Grace is giving someone, something they don’t deserve.

My favorite character wasn't the son, although I do like the personality trait that you described. Instead, I liked the father, because for one we are in his 3rd person POV more than the son's and so I think you connected to him more. But also I liked him because he was brave and kept pushing on. He was a survivor. The son on the other hand was a whiny little buttmunch that pissed me off half the time. I mean he grew up in this world so he should be used to it by now. And not only that but he had his suicidal moments in the beginning showing he wasn't much of a survivor. He's a coward until the very end.

The Road to Thanksgiving

Well despite not being able to watch the last THREEEEEEEEEE minutes, I thought the movie was good. Based on what Mrs. Clark said was in the last three minutes, the ending was probably more informative than the book. But I couldn't tell you definitely. All I can tell you is that friggin Viggo Mortensen (aka Aragorn from LotR) was awesome. And though her part was itsy bitsy, Chalize Theron (also played in Snow White and the Huntsmen and Prometheus) played the mothers role pretty well. That birthing scene was like O_O This is why I will never have kids. I will have to admit that the darkness surrounding the movie was a pain in the butt. Every time someone cracked the door, I missed half the screen.

The movie really put into perspective how bad they were living. And with Thanksgiving coming up, it really made me thankful for all that I have. And then my mom puts on a football game and I'm like "Kill me please. T_T" I had to work Thanksgiving day for the Gray Thursday sales and Oh My Bejeezus. Some of these people are crazy. Of course, I was safe in my hidey hole near only one big item was selling. It made me really think of this:

A theme I gathered from the The Road was perseverance. In a time in which it was questionable whether or not it was even worth-while to stay alive, the man endured starvation, severely cold weather, and the loss of his wife just in order to keep hope alive for his son and himself. I think that message is one that a lot of people should hear and take heart to. Especially in our times now, people often give up just as things are getting hard. The man and his son persevered through and survived a lot more than most people in the world did. They were the good guys: they didn’t give up.

haha love the picture and I totally agree. They really are the heroes in that they didnt break down and start eating people whether dead or alive. They carried the will of human nature and persevered through the hardships that were thrown their way. Even when they were on the brink of death from starvation they didnt lose their humanity. It shows that there is always hope no matter how hard the situation seems. So this book definitely has a good message. And for that it is even more fantastical! ^_^

Endings

Alright! The Road definitely has the best ending of the books. The Things They Carried only left me wanting more and a little confused on certain topics. It seemed to talk to theoretically for me especially that crappy chapter Notes from the Author. As for ELIC, that left me unsatisfied in that we never figured out what was in the safety deposit box and the ending in general just seemed to happen so fast. Don't even get me started on the Goon Squad. UGGGHHHH such an awful book. But this book seemed to have a real ending to it. I didn't have to wonder about what happened to the dad because I knew he was going to die at some point and the son had a place to go at the end he didn't just wonder about aimlessly only to be caught and eaten so yes for me this book was definitely the best one even if the dialogue was a pain in the butt.

Gosh I totally forgot it was Sunday and had to do this… Also forgot about Fridays. Anyways yeah I totally agree on zombies thing. I think because there is so much ‘walking dead’ we expect every apocalypse story to be about zombies. Sadly it isn’t, but it’s still cool. I really can’t stand the lack of quotation marks and breakup paragraphs in the novel. Personally I like the movie SO much better. The book just seems so dry. The movies is pretty slow also, so after watching that and now reading it, the book is even worse. I just do not have the patience for a patiently read book. But I like the story all in all!

I don't mind the pacing so much but yeah it seems a little dry in some areas but McCormac makes up for that in that the book again picks up speed. As for he spacing of the paragraphs, it's a nice progression of time without having to add fillers like "and they fell asleep" everytime he once to move onto the next day (although he still does but not as frequently as he could have). I saw the movie at my walmart and was so tempted to buy it and watch but decided to be awesome and wait for class. It's hard because I would like to see it played out so bad instead of having to read it because the dialogue is so hard for me to follow.

Haha yeah definitely the best piece. And you finished?! Well, I would be too if I wasn't so engrossed in Pokemon lol. Anyways, McCarthy's writing style is very intense in how he describes some things. I particularly like his flow of time in that he just jumps right on into the next piece. And he builds suspense well in that when they went to the first bunker and saw the two people and the third guy that had no legs (eaten, of course) and you just have the man saying we need to leave we need to leave. That had me at the edge of my seat, wondering are these people who are begging for help going to eat them. But I was intensely relieved and a little saddened that no it was other people that were the cannibals and not these unfortunate people (who get eaten eventually).

Sometimes it's hard for me to realize who's speaking until the boy gives an indicator like "papa". Then I have to run back through the conversation (BACKWARDS might I add) to get a good sense of the dialogue that just happened. Besides this minor problem of mine, this would definitely be the best book we've read so far in class. (Outside of the passage from In Cold Blood, of course.)

Oh My Bejeezus: This sucked

Beauty at it’s best. He walked down the street talking with friends—laughing, joking, having a good time. He had everything and she, well, she had her dreams. Of a life with him by her side, of them having two little children. A boy and a little girl, both mirror images of him with perhaps her eyes; the only good feature on her person.

Shunned by everyone for her obesity, her body odor, her flat, lifeless hair. There was nothing beautiful about her, except her emerald green eyes. She sighed as he walked into the restaurant, he would never give her the time of day. Isabelle returned to her homework, working through reading this god-awful post-modern book A Visit from the Goon Squad. Maybe one day, she would have a husband and not be the old cat-lady down the street that everyone made fun of. Ah, she was dreaming again. She had to stop getting her hopes up and just resign herself to being an old maid. It would be for the best. If she didn’t dream, then she would never be hurt.

She jerked back at the loud voice, snapping out of her day dream. She looked up to the voice and was reminded of why she started day dreaming. His blinding smile was directed at her, dark hair a sharp contrast against his icy blue eyes. He truly was beautiful. And so out of my league…

"Belle!"

She blushed, she had done it again. If she could just stop looking at him. Yes! That’s what she would do. Turning, she faced the math book in front of her, “Yessum?”

"You wanna hang out sometime?"

She whipped her head around in disbelief, “What?”

He laughed, “Don’t sound so shocked. But do you wanna? I was thinking dinner and a movie, maybe?”

Giving a small smile, she wholeheartedly agreed, “when?”

"This weekend. I’ll text you the details."

"Okay. Can’t wait."

She waited for him all day but he never showed. At school, she overheard him laughing with his friends about standing her up. When school let out, she went home, quiet. She walked into her bathroom, opening up the medicine cabinet and found the prescription pain killers. She took some and went to her room. Laying on her bed, she closed her eyes and let the world fall away from her. She never stopped dreaming.

I have to disagree, I preferred ELIC over TTTC. Both were out of my comfort zone in that war stories do nothing for me and I never read sad stories. As for TTTC, personally I liked All Quiet On the Western Front better. TTTC is so broken and so all over the place that you can't really tell what's real and what's not. So it's hard to believe that what happened in the book has any truth to it. Did the soldiers have trouble reintergrating into society? Of course. A lot of what O'Brien narrates, he contradicts in a later chapter, so it's hard to tell truth from fiction.

Battle of the Books

Personally I liked ELIC better than TTTC because I love the puzzle that Foer creates. Like at the end we find out that Thomas Schell Sr. was in the art store and that the reason everyone knew Oskar's name was because of his mom. To me, these are the best kind of books. But as a written narrative, I love TTTC better because it's easier to read and has fewer distractions than ELIC. Both stories however do jump around but TTTC has fewer distractions eliminating the time to reread a section because you forgot what happened. In terms of a linear plot line, I think ELIC is more linear even though there are two different stories going on.

I agree about the different points of view. I love how they all eventually tie in. I love the different medias used to illustrate what the narrator is describing. Sometimes it can be a little distracting like the numbers and the message behind the numbers or the writing that started to overlap. That was a bit distracting and it made reading hard.

I also felt like the plot was a little thin.

There were plenty of revelations like the true owner of the key and the last message on the answering machine, but they were all anti-climatic leaving for a horrible story. It's definitely not on the reread list

Incredibly Close

The whole story of Extremely Loud and Incredibly close really hit home as I was reading it. I lost my dad in the summer between 6th and 7th grade from cancer. It might not have been as tragic and sudden as Oskar losing his dad, but it was just as devastating. Like Oskar, though, I couldn't work up the courage to say goodbye to my dad before he died. He was in the next room and I was too scared to go in there and say goodbye. Now, I regret it and feel guilty over it. If I could go back, I would have told him I loved him one last time. But unfortunately, like Oskar, I can't go back. So what I do is move forward being the best daughter I could ever be.

Every time I think of my dad, I remember all the fun we had playing as warriors with the laundry baskets and the feather dusters. Playing backgammon or chess or building a puzzle. Going swimming until I blistered. Playing with the myriad of animals we had. Going 4-wheeling, riding in dune buggies, and go-carting. Flying in private planes, watching him build a plane, or even flying my own plane:

Despite never having said goodbye, I can always look back on the good times we had and not regret too much. I hope anyone else who has lost a loved one can do the same.

Oskar.

I admire Oskar and really appreciate his character. Most kids his age going through a similar situation may not take it the way he is. In his situation he’s curious and wants to know everything, or at least the things he doesn’t already. In some way I think he’s treasure hunting is a way to cope but I also think he just wants to have the answer to something. I think he is also given way more information about things than he realizes. I like Oskar and am excited to see how his character plays out.

I like Oskar's character but at the same time I feel like he is kind of a jerk. My parents split when I was young and while I hoped they would get back together, I also didn't exactly oppose my mother dating again. I think that's the only thing I hate about Oskar. He is just so mean to his mom sometimes and she doesn't deserve it. Yes, I'll admit to doing the same to my mom but it's for completely different reasons than Oskar. Me and my mom just clash personality wise lol. Whoever said opposites attract lied!!!

But other than the way he treats his mom, Oskar is a pretty cool character. I like how blunt he is. It makes for fun reading.

I'll have to break from anime to post this but it just resonated with the book so well. This clip is from the 2013 Emmy Awards and is a tribute to the 60s I believe. It mostly resonates when it talks about the Beatles.

Oskar is a big Beatles fan and I thought maybe the explanation Don Cheadle presents is an explanation as to why Oskar loves them so much.

I hear you. I wouldn't have caught the role reversal either and the reason I believe is that now and days house husbands do exist. Not only them, but strong, independent women do as well.

I also had trouble relating to them. The dark comics were not my cup of tea but at the same time they weren't actually that different from the manga I read so it didn't strike me as different until the class discussions. My main problem with the stuff we read is relating it to the time period they were 1) written in and 2) set in. It's the hardest thing to do because as it stands I relate everything to the here and now.

In the spirit of Come Over, Come Over, I have posted a page from the manga Death Note. Death Note is where a kid, Light Yagami, finds a book called the Death Note. With this book, he is able to cause the death of anyone that he has a name for and in various ways.

The reason I picked this one is that Come Over (2x) is a comic strip made up mostly of writing and very little picture. Whenever I think of that, I picture this manga because that was the main reason I could never finish it. It was too wordy for a manga. Also, in the beginning of the manga, there was a lot of questionings of whats right and wrong and of guilty feelings after doing something.

However, the guilt is mostly due to morality which then ties into The Things They Carried. In the beginning, the main character, Light, has a moral dilemma of if killing people that deserve to die (aka rapists, serial killers, etc) if morally right or wrong. But eventually as the story progresses, Light has lost his sense of morality.
