Butchlander Hanahaki AU where Homelander chooses to have the flowers removed everytime he’s afflicted with the disease.

With Maeve, it happened after they shared their first kiss in front of the cameras. HL was giddy and thought their relationship was going to get deeper from there because they’re finally PUBLIC only for him to suffer a coughing fit in his trailer and finds a singular red petal on his hand.

HL kept the flowers for Madelyn the longest. He kept them long enough for him to identify them as yellow carnations. He had them removed upon learning about Ryan.

HL was surprised when he finds himself coughing a singular dark burgundy, almost black petals after an encounter with Butcher. He has it removed immediately. Surprise turns into horror when he finds himself coughing out more black petals after another encounter. He has the flowers removed so often that the supes that have the ability over plants and flowers are on call. The removal does nothing to halt the disease’s progression that he coughed up an entire flower, a singular black dahlia.

YES. Though I do imagine there’s an AU where Homelander, who is normally plagued by nightmares when he sleeps, ends up dreaming about these alternate lives. He never has any influence on the dreams, kind of just forced to watch and feel everything his alternate selves are feeling. In all the realities, he has Billy. It weirds him out at first but it beats the nightmares of reliving his days back in the lab so he just goes with it. By the first month, it became increasingly clear that he and Billy are together in every other universe, except this one.

Butchlander Hanahaki Disease AU with Homelander who has always craved love, looking for it in all the wrong places, falling in love with his nemesis Billy Butcher who hates him and wants him dead. All the emotional hurt and angst in the world with Homelander's already unstable mental health declining further into deep depression and self-hatred. His physical health deteriorating slowly as well, because even the strongest supe alive isn't immune to the deadly flowers blooming inside him.

Butcher finds out and is gleeful, rubbing it in Homelander's face when they meet. Saying, that it's no wonder the supe has fallen victim to the sickness caused by one-sided love, because who could love a monster like him?

At this point Homelander is already quite far gone with the disease, and hearing the object of his love telling him that he's "an unlovable cunt" causes Homelander to start violently coughing and vomiting a blooming Trillium recurvatum. Looking up at Butcher with wide and terrified eyes, Homelander takes wobbly flight.

Naturally, Butcher doesn't recognize the crimson flower, coated with more crimson of Homelander's blood. But he takes a photo of the mess, and when he shows it to the Boys, they make a reverse image search.

And when all heads turn to look at Butcher, there's not much else to say than, "Fuck me", paired with a diabolical grin. Because Butcher just found a way to finally kill the worst supe cunt on Earth. And what a poetic way, too. Homelander destroyed the love of Butcher's life. Now Butcher's going to do the same to Homelander with his mere existence.

But a supe of Homelander's caliber doesn't succumb to any illness or ailment nearly as fast as a regular human would. So, there's a lot of time for Butcher to find more dirt about Vought, since getting rid of Homelander is only one part of dismantling the megacorporation.

So, one day searching an abandoded facility that looks like it had been a lab of some sort at one point, Butcher stumbles on a box with old VHS tapes simply named "John #001", "John #002", "John #003", and so on.

Butcher begins watching the first tape, where there's a small blond, blue-eyed baby that makes Butcher feel at unease. The feeling increases with every video as the child grows and is subjected to absolutely inhumane conditions and torture. And when the child finally gains blood red eyes, shooting lasers from them, there's no doubt about the child's identity anymore. John is Homelander.

Butcher's conflicted. Very conflicted. Because he has this image of Homelander as a ruthless and sick psychopath set in stone. But these videos have made his conviction waver.

So, after all the emotional hurt and angst (not depicted here, because I fail), there's a happy ending with Butcher having snatched Vought's crown jewel right under their nose, slowly warming up to the man known as John, finally returning his feelings, and becoming a real family with their son Ryan.

When Firecracker modified her body for Homelander’s sole benefit, she get shunned despite the almost irreversible effect on her body. When Butcher modified his body for Homelander’s destruction, the changes to his body are “beautiful”. Damn, is Homelander gay or something?

Although I really was confused why Firecracker’s show of devotion (nearly killing herself with those pills, abandoning her beliefs and the people she cared about) was never recognized by Homelander. How was Billy’s “devotion” different?

Firecracker was drawn to his “divinity” and debased herself thinking he’s the closest thing to god. Butcher saw through him and sees through his “mortality” or almost, his “humanity”, and dedicated himself to destroy him.

Like others have said before, maybe Homelander would rather be seen as a person, even if it means being hated. That or he subconciously hates himself that he’d rather take what Billy was offering (which is a whole other topic).

There are more layers to it and I’m sure people would have more to say or have a completely different take and I’m all for it!

I think HL just felt conflicted about receiving genuine adoration, he had never receive affection or genuine love growing up after all.

His only experience came in the flavour of performantive behaviour by his owners or vacant love from fans who has 0 idea who he was, it could be a frightening experience specially if it wasnt like he expected it to be after years of only knowing the fake stuff... i mean ppl only gave him affection if he gave them something first (good behaviour, sales numbers, photo ops, be white and blond) but Firecracker nor the deep asked for anything to love him other than his presence in their life.

Both Firecracker and The Deep loved him for him, but nobody else has ever done that and the alien feeling is both frightening and disgusting bcuz why is it that the only ppl who have ever love him genuinely are a zoophile and a pedophile (and HL is after all a victim of a female predator himself) wouldnt it make you a little angry if these were the ppl who loved you? Wouldnt it say something about you as a person when the only ppl in the world who have ever genuinely care about you also happen to be 2 of the worse things a person can be?

Butcher on the other hand is a perfectly vanilla individual by comparison and his devotion is just as intense which is probably why he liked him more.

It really is a toss up whether Firecracker and Deep’s devotion could be seen as conditional or unconditional. Its clear that Butcher’s was unconditional. He is intent on going after Homelander, all other things be damned.

Your post shows that regardless of whether the ‘devotion’ is unconditional, HL would still not hold Firecracker’s and Deep’s to the same regard as he does for Butcher’s.

The type of unconditional devotion plays a part. Firecracker’s and Deep’s were ‘positive’, in that its genuine love or affection. Butcher’s is definitey ‘negative’, fueled by pure hatred. You’re right in that HL is not used to the positive type of devotion. It implies that its much easier for HL to accept the negative type of devotion. His upbringing in the lab made it much easier, more familiar. This also goes back to the observation that HL subconsciously hates himself, thinking the hatred is what he deserved.

What also plays a part is the person he receives this devotion from, as the post says. HL had no ounce of respect for either Firecracker or Deep so receiving genuine affection from them means nothing, if not ‘fucking disgusting’. On the other hand, he sees Butcher as almost an equal. HL is then more receptive if he’s receiving the attention of someone he respects, regardless of its form.

I think the person he receives attention from may be more important. He knew Madelyn and Stormfront were using him but he let it happen because he respects them. There is one scene back in S1 where Maeve flirts with him so he’d let Annie off the hook. He knows he’s receiving her attention to get him to do something but he lets it happen.

Now Billy, he’s a disastrous mix of both. He’s someone HL respects AND shows him unconditional devotion. He must’ve been a novelty which is why HL kept him alive all this time.

If Homelander ended up killing Billy first before the events of season 5, I think Homelander would hallucinate him instead of Madelyn BUT instead of giving him the delusion that he’d ascend into godhood, Billy would be like the Grim Reaper. He never speaks but he seems to always be watching. As Homelander grows more unhinged, Billy would appear more often. He’d be the dark figure in the crowd, at the corner of his reflection with that smirk, or the looming figure just before he falls asleep.
