Modern Studies Added Value Unit notes.
Breakfast and revision ✌️
It's 3 weeks into my 4th year and I already have 16 text books. The majority of them are for my twin who is studying all 3 sciences and music, while I'm only doing 1 science- biology.
what should i bring on the first day of school
okay so what i bring on the first day of school is firsthand the essentials
(pencils, loose leaf, highlighters, glue, scissors, assorted colored pens)
then i bring a notebook for each class
(science, history, math, language, english)
then i bring what i need for electives (in my case its my art classes bc im an art major)
sketchbook, pens, art project, eraser, pencil sharpner, personal sketchbook
then i bring what i personally would like to have
my phone, lunch, money (about 5 bucks), book, and a water bottle, ipod
thats my checklist but of course bring
a good attitude, respect, attentiveness, copies of your class periods and an interest in learning (even if its surveying the classroom)
hope this helps m8!!!
need school help??
When you fail an exam, it feels awful. I found out today that I failed my Grade 5 music theory exam. Failing is just something that happens to everyone at some point at their life, it could be something like an exam or test for school, or it could be a more personal thing. I will admit, when I found out I failed, I was shocked. I thought I did well in that exam, and thought I would get at least 75%, but no. I got 60%, and the pass mark was 66%. I did cry- for 3 hours in my bed while listening to sad music. I did work very hard to prepare for that exam, and in the mock exam I did 2 days before the exam I got 90% in it. While I was crying in my bed with the duvet engulfing me, I watched a couple of YouTube videos to help me to cope with it, and here are a few tips I have learned from either these videos or from personal experience. 1. Don't compare your results to others. This one I feel is very important, because after receiving a bad mark, it's easy to look at others results and end up feeling like crap. I know it's hard, but try not to do this because you need to know that this is YOUR best try, not everyone else's around you. 2. Remember you did everything you could to prepare for this. If you did revise and study your notes for this as much as you could, and you fail, THAT IS OK. As long as you did all the ground work, realise that that is the best you can do, and although you didn't do as well as hoped, you still did your best. 3. Learn from your mistakes. "Never a failure, just a lesson", this is important so you don't make the same mistakes if you do a re-sit. Note down where you went wrong, and concentrate especially at those parts. But in doing that, remember to not abandon the other topics, as that could cause mistakes on the second time. 4. Don't be too harsh on yourself. Don't beat yourself up about failing an exam. Most times, you can resit the exam. Exams aren't the end of the world if you fail, that subject just may not be for you. 5. Don't try to forget about it. As hard as it sounds, trying to forget about it will just make this fail mean nothing. Failures is there to teach us a lesson, to revise more or to change subject or study technique. Forgetting will just make the problem reappear. Hope this helps anyone. And according to me, yes is is okay to cry.

Mara Wilson’s Important Message For Teens Living With Mental Illness
Looking back on her experience with
mental health issues
, Mara Wilson wishes someone had told her that being depressed and having anxiety was OK. Since no one did that for her growing up, she’s taking the opportunity to tell young people now. The former child actress and current writer teamed up with
Project UROK
, a nonprofit organization devoted to helping teens with mental illness.
WATCH the full video video, where Wilson opens up about the mental issues she’s had over the years including anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
I love her
Sorry I haven't been posting recently, I have been on several family outings and had no time for studying. But this is a homemade salad I had the other day. It's just got different types of salad leaves with carrot and 2 hard boiled eggs. The dressing is just olive oil, mustard and honey. This salad tasted amazing by the way! 😋

Target is my favorite thing in this world.
They have a whole line of Cambridge notebooks (i already own a standard size one in white) and today I found a pack of three little notebooks, all saying Chapter 1, 2, or 3.
In addition, I picked up some more staedtler pens in black, as well as a cute organizer with purple/blue/gold paper and binder clips.
Did I need any of this? No. But it is beautiful and I spent less than $20!
Evaluation of my studying habits during the first semester of 2015
My classes end next week and, before setting goals and planning for the next semester, I thought evaluating my current studying habits would be a great way to avoid making old mistakes over and over.
If anyone actually ends up reading this, I strongly encourage them to evaluate their current habits and look for little things that could be improved. Also, this post can be used as reference for things students should not do.
Staying up late. Things were super productive at first, but eventually I started having trouble paying attention to classes, felt sleepy all day and developed an addiction to coffee. Studying until midnight not only was harmful to my health, it was counterproductive – apparently, sleep facilitates memory retention (more info: x & x).
Overlooking health issues. If I had taken care of my health when my body started doing weird things, I would probably not have lost a lot of money and several hours with doctor appointments. Studying is never productive if I am not feeling well and I can guarantee that going to a doctor a couple times is less time-consuming than going to several doctors and doing hundreds of blood tests.
Overlooking mental health. Let’s just say that crying at the thought of leaving your house is problematic. It is impossible to be productive without being on a serene mental state. Not even happy, just stable and calm. There are hundreds of posts explaining why you shouldn’t overlook your mental health, so I am not going into detail here.
Having no goals/not planning how to actually accomplish them. At the beggining of the semester I had no idea about what to do with my life. Studying served no purpuse, but I still had to do it. Not having goals destroyed my motivation to do anything. Also, when I actually got a grasp of what I wanted, I didn’t plan how to get there.
Drinking too much coffee. Not sleeping made me start drinking coffee, which has lead me to an addiction. Having a cup once in a while should be OK, but having headaches when you miss your morning coffee is a red flag. Coffee is kind of romanticized in this website, but shaking, fainting or having palpitations is not cute.
Not exercising and eating poorly. I am not going to explain why this is bad because it’s quite obvious, but here are some interesting links: x & x.
Not socializing. Humans are social beings and some interaction from time to time is fundamental. I am an introvert (which means I can’t stand being around others for a long time) and I am also shy, which made me think that cutting almost all my friends from my life would be a good idea, because I would have more time to study (why???). Getting back to socializing will be quite a challenge, but hopefully I’ll learn to be around others and not be anxious.
Spending too much time on tumblr. This site took procrastination to a whole new level. Five minutes taking photos of what I am going to study, ten choosing the best photo and three editing it. Five more to write a caption. Also, the amount of stuff to be seen on the dashboard is overwhelming. I don’t need motivation (basic excuse for using tumblr), I need discipline.
Making studying your life. Studying should not be a burden, but it often becomes one when all you do is drawing flashcards and mindmaps. Balance is very important to lead a healthy life and a healthy life leads to good grades and happiness. To be honest, all of the problems I’ve had this semester wouldn’t exist if I learned how to live a balanced life.
Setting unrealistic deadlines. Demotivating, nerve-wraking and overall not a good idea. Quality beats quantity and doing two things everyday is better than wanting to do nine, getting anxious and doing none at the end.
This sums up all of my failures. I am still thinking about ways to solve most of them, but it is very difficult because those are problems I have carried for years. Hopefully I will be able to figure it out, but if anyone actually reads this and has good advice about one of the topics, I’d be glad if you sent me a message.

When You Don’t Understand Something
Even the best and brightest students don’t understand everything they read in a text book immediately. Here’s some ideas of what to do when you read something that just doesn’t make sense.
1) Reread it.
2) Read it aloud.
3) Read it aloud very slowly.
4) Close your eyes and try to visualize what the text is telling you.
5) Draw a picture of it.
6) Take a break (no, two minutes doesn’t count), and come back with “fresh eyes”.
7) Google it.
8) Ask a friend who has covered this material before.
9) Ask a friend who is covering this material at the same time as you.
10) Ask a friend/younger sibling who hasn’t covered this material yet (the different, simpler perspective can be more helpful than you’d think).
11) Ask a teacher.
12) Make up a melody and sing the passage.
13) Find a book on the subject for additional perspective.
14) Look on YouTube for aural and visual interpretations.
15) Translate a few lines into another language you are familiar with, especially a first language.
16) Do an interpretive dance of the words.
17) Act it out but without dancing if that’s how you feel.
18) Do a dramatic reading of the passage in your mirror.
19) Look up any words you didn’t immediately know in a dictionary or in the glossary of the text book- they might have a meaning in this context that’s different from the meaning you know.
20) Review earlier material to make sure you’re not missing any details that would be key to understanding this.
ADDITIONAL TIPS:
Don’t be hard on yourself. Everyone has moments like these. It is how you learn.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help!! Especially from your teacher!!
Know your “studying limit”. You can only stay focused for so long, and trying to interpret new information once you’ve reached this point will prove extremely difficult. Taking breaks is essential to studying efficiently.
