It's the 269th anniversary of the Battle of Culloden. In 1746 the Jacobite army fought the Hanoverian army on Culloden Moor marking the end of the 1745 Rising. The battle left roughly 1,500 Jacobite men and 50 Hanoverians dead with many more casualties to follow in the aftermath of the battle. We remember those who fought and fell on that day, we remember them all, regardless of name, regiment or army. Cuil Lodair agus Gaidhealtachd gu brath.

The Thistle - The National Flower of Scotland
The thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III (1249–1286) and was used on silver coins issued by James III in 1470. It is the symbol of the Order of the Thistle, a high chivalric order of Scotland. It is found in many Scottish symbols and as the name of several Scottish football clubs. The thistle is also the emblem of Encyclopaedia Britannica, which originated in Edinburgh, Scotland.
There are several different legends that tell how the thistle became a symbol of Scotland, but most date from the reign of Alexander III and in particular the events surrounding the Battle of Largs in 1263.
It is often forgotten that for hundreds of years much of Scotland was part of the Kingdom of Norway. By 1263 however, Norway seemed to have little interest in their former territory. That was until King Alexander III proposed to buy back the Western Isles and Kintyre from the Norse King Haakon IV. The thought of relieving King Alexander of some of his riches and territories appears to have rekindled Norse interest in Scotland.
Late in the summer of 1263, King Haarkon, now intent on conquering the Scots, set of with a sizeable fleet of long-ships for the Scottish coast. Gales and fierce storms forced some of the ships onto the beach at Largs, Ayrshire, and the Norse force was landed.
Legend has it that at some point during the invasion the Norse planned a surprise night attack on the Clansmen, in order to take them unaware whilst they slept. In order to move stealthily under the cover of darkness, the Norsemen removed their footwear, but as they crept barefoot they came across an are of ground thickly covered in thistles. Unfortunately one of Hakkons men let out a shriek of pain when the flower bit into the sole of his foot alerting the Clansmen to the advancing Norsemen. With time to prepare before the Norsemen reached their camp the Scots defeated the Norse at what became known as the Battle of Largs, thus saving Scotland from Invasion, and if the tale is to be believed, all thanks to what is essentially a weed. A weed that went on to become a symbol of Scotland for centuries to come.
