Sophisticated hardcore rap, Scott Ramirez is an emcee that’ll put you in a headlock and serenade you at the same time. Coming out of a songwriting incubation period since his past release of the Mad Work, Low Pay, Big Dreams EP, he is currently prepping a new project. Taking inspiration from Black Moon’s debut album, Enta Da Stage, this EP (currently untitled) aims to manifest similar vibes that the Brooklyn group brought to the table. Ramirez has been keeping busy with shows, maintaining a presence on the live show circuit as well as joining Canadian Hip Hop duo, Perfeck Strangers on their Dreams Tour in several stops. “Ramirez’ sound will soothe any hip hop-loving fan like a smoothie made from an M.O.P. album and a Canadian flag that got tossed into a blender.” - Brandon Bastaldo, Quip Magazine Along with the help of his DJ, Ryan de Rushe, Ramirez’s live shows are punctuated with a boisterous presence and tight crowd control, culminating in an emcee/DJ 1-2 combination. Having performed under the likes of J-Live, Mike Swift, Maybach Music's Stalley and the legendary Wu-Tang Clan's GZA and Masta Killa; and also with Toronto luminaries such as Alex Dimez, Dan-e-o and Angerville, Ramirez delivers a strong performance with a no-nonsense approach. Complementing his musical endeavours, he is also a graphic designer by trade, having completed his undergrad with the University of Toronto. His portfolio includes work for the U of T Scarborough campus, Bell Media, Canadian Hip Hop legend/actor Maestro Fresh Wes, and political activist/writer Tarek Fatah.
Human rights lawyer Bryan Stevenson represents those who have been abandoned. His clients are people on death row — abused and neglected children who were prosecuted as adults and placed in adult prisons where they were beaten and sexually abused, and mentally disabled people whose illnesses helped land them in prison where their special needs were unmet.
Today he spoke to us about justice in the 21st century:
"The new statistic from the Justice [Department] is really disheartening: The Justice Department is now reporting that one in three black male babies born in the 21st century is expected to go to jail or prison. The statistic for Latino boys is one in six. That statistic was not true in the 20th century. It was not true in the 19th century. It didn’t become true until the 21st century. That means we have enormous work to do to improve our commitment to society that is not haunted and undermined and corrupted by our legacy of racial inequality.”
