✦ MILENA TSCHARNTKE, CIS FEMALE, SHE/HER ✦ SCOUT VOIGHT the  TWENTY-NINE year old has been in Hidehill for HER ENTIRE LIFE and was an  ACQUANTINCE to Jade Parker, the missing first murder victim. Whispers  on the streets are that the BOOK CLERK AT UNDERCOVER BOOKS who lives in  HIDE SQUARE. She is said to be OPEN and SELF-SABOTAGING but I guess  we’ll find out for ourselves.

Scout is the middle child of the Voight family— older to [ Kingston ], younger to Sybil. And, yes, she has fallen victim to the Middle Child Syndrome. Perhaps it was fitting that her first real taste of it came because of hockey. Because their father loved it, so did she. She borrowed his jersey and swam in the fabric, sitting on the floor of their trailer and watching the puck on the screen. She learned to cheer when her dad did. And she was excited for the day when she got to have skates of her own and play. But it wasn’t her; it was [ Kingston ]. She got a Barbie instead.

Throughout the years, Scout was there to support her brother. She eventually got her own skates and wasn’t afraid of a little one-on-one match up but most times she was in the stands, a book in her bag in emergency for those occasional blow-outs.

Then there was Sybil. Whatever attention [ Kingston’s ] hockey didn’t take, her sister’s shenanigans did. She’d learned a thing or two about getting into trouble during those years; a positive being that she could fly her own missteps (calculated or not) under the radar. Then suddenly, things changed. Yale? Harvard? Scout couldn’t win. She couldn’t be the athlete and now the smart one was taken. Guess someone had to fill the shoes of family disappointment.

She wasn’t so invisible when they had to come pick her up off of the front steps of her apartment, unsuccessful in getting her keys to “work” after knocking back countless shots. Or when there was video evidence of her dancing on the bar at Envy. Or that one time she’d called from jail. A misunderstanding, really.

It was the need for validation and also just the need for an outlet that Scout found herself on TikTok. Turns out people were curious about the life of a NHL player’s sister, even if it was just her rambling as she got ready or vlogs that she’d start but never fully finish until she woke up half-alive the next morning. It became like a diary for her. A bit oversharing. Or more than a bit. But people cared, or at least they tuned in.

While Scout had tried college out— not Yale, mind you— she left just a year shy of graduation. Undecided the whole way through, but she nearly committed to being an English major. That she imagined would have been just as disappointing to her father as when she dropped out. Those books she brought to the rink had fed a love for stories. There were notes on her phone with snippets of books she’d never write, word documents of half chapters, and stacks of books with worn spines throughout her place.

It was also that love that brought her to Undercover Books. A job where she got to read in her downtime? Felt a little unfair to all the busy, hardworking people out there wanting to kill their bosses. Sure, Scout did need a push some days to be a better worker, whether it was recording a TikTok or showing... that was a nasty habit of hers. She’d be late to her own funeral.

Skateboarding is her main form of transportation. It became a personality trait after she rematched Sleepover in her twenties and saw Julie in that red dress being the epitome of cool. Does she have her license? Yes. Car? No. Should she be trusted behind the wheel? Most likely not.

Is a crier. And she’s not too shy about it. In fact, she has been known to openly get her groceries with mascara stains still on her cheeks. But sometimes a bitch just needs to get her emotional support Cheez-Its.

Scout loves her siblings. I mean, sure, she gets frustrated by them almost weekly but in terms of the whole middle child thing, that she blames mostly on her parents.

Studied abroad in London for the summer just before leaving college.

“Good to know we’re always on the same page.” He gives the blonde a grin, downing the shot in one go, enjoying the burn it leaves down his throat, slamming it down in harmony with Scout. He chuckles, it feels like a scene straight out of some movie. There’s a few people he knew that he could go hard on the booze with, because they were on the same wavelength. Scout was one of these people. “You can count on me.” If anyone self-indulged and motivated people to do so, it was him. He chuckles at her act. “Now that you threaten me so, I have no choice,” he jokes, but he’ll make sure that the only thing Scout will have is an absolute blast.

“I thank you for your services. Do a good job and there might be a free tequila shot in your future.” Changing her pointed finger into one that tapped his chest lightly, Scout hummed softly. “Now that that’s out of the way, we really need to tackle the next big question; another round or are we hitting the dance floor? Or—” Scout tilted her head to the side, struck with an idea, perhaps more out of left field, “—should we give each other like a secret identity and talk to people like we’re in the... the— what’s it called? The thing Mary-Kate and Ashley were in in their Australian movie.”

A breath escapes her as Chase tugs onto the threads of her hair, commanding access to her neck. Heat rose up her body, starting at her core and spreading out, rushing towards the places his body connected with hers. Scout craned her body into his, forcing the kiss against her neck to press harder, wanting desperately for it to leave a mark. Anything to remind her beyond this moment that Lukas was not the last impression left on her. Eager hands slid down his abdomen, connecting with waistband of his pants, her fingers curling against the fabric as his actions triggered a moan.

Noah tried to keep his amusement at a minimum, given that it seemed she was very clearly beholden to some sort of true passion about the topic she had brought up. It hadn’t been something on his radar beforehand, but glancing from her face to the screen, he could see why it might cause  be causing her to be perturbed. 

“You know, that silent G would have went right over my head,” He confesses, for as smart as he had been told his whole life that he was, pronunciations got him at times. “I’d have been pronouncing that G like the dude was named ganache.” 

He gestures to her empty glass, his own beer having depleted to having only a mouthful left. 

“You want another?”

“See, that’s how seven year old me thought it was pronounced,” Scout responded, lifting her finger as he caught her onto something, a whole new string of memories and thoughts. Hockey had surrounded her family her entire life and before then. She knew the name of the Predator’s goalie before she knew the names of any president. “So obviously I was confused when the whole family started laughing at me. Like... I’m sorry?” Scout pulled her head back and scrunched up her shoulders to her neck, still not completely over the one had it not been clear enough already. “G-Not my fault!”

She laughed at her owe joke for a second too long before nodding her head, lifting her emptied cocktail glass. A pinkish ring of liquid hung onto the bottom, the dregs of her second. “How’d you know?”

Thomas sits down at the table across from the person he was meeting, parting his lips to start diving into business until his gaze lifts up. He notices the back of that head from anywhere and the thoughts that enter his mind aren’t exactly work safe. He adjusts himself in his chair and pulls his gaze away from her. He talks, listens and does whatever he have to. He waits in, glancing towards her every once in a while but once she gets up he takes his chance and excuses himself, following her. He pushes open the door to the ladies restroom, turning to look under the stalls to see no feet so he takes the opportunity to lean up against the door, watching her in the mirror. “Scout.”

Scout had suddenly become intimately aware of the autumn salad with all of its ingredients read over a thousand times, the menu much too close to her face. She feared that if she pulled it away, the blush that painted her cheeks would be fully on display. And while it was okay for Denim Jacket off to her left, it was far from okay for it to be seen by him. She needed to splash some cold water on her face. After giving a quick check to see if the coast was clear, Scout set down her menu and scampered off to the women’s restroom. Her fingers hand been wrapped around the edge of the sink, her eyes staring back at her reflection, her words quite in their pep talk of ‘you can do this”— when the door opened. Her heart fluttered and her stomach sank. When was she going to catch a break? “I think you have the wrong room,” she managed to squeak out, her body rising slowly until she stood up, though not fully tall.

Their eyes had both turned skyward— or roofward— awaiting the light to go off on his truck as if it were their permission. When it finally does, their eyes connect for the briefest second before his hands are on hers and she's easily guided into his lap. Scout's hands return back to where they had been at the bar, placed gently against the fabric of his shirt, fixed at the point between his chest and his abs. She leans into his touch, lightly moving her neck further into his grasp. It's her this time that deepens the kiss, not with a lick but with a nip. Teeth on the flesh of his lip. A way of asking him to please not be too gentle.

Chase glances over at her when she mentions he can do more than kiss her. He brushes his tongue along his lower lip as he pulls out his keys, nodding his head. “Jesus.” He murmurs. He turns around the corner to his truck and clicks the unlock button. He reaches out with his free hand, grabbing the handle and pulling on it to open the door. “After you.” He doesn’t want to think about the last person he was with.

While she wasn't that drunk, Scout had heard him murmur 'Jesus' and her first reaction was to correct him. "No, it's Scout." A joke she had tried to pass off real for all of maybe a single second before she giggled, revealing herself. The sound of the doors unlocking settles her back down, or settles her different because suddenly it's like there's this big gap. Her on the sidewalk before... and her in the truck, after. Scout shook away the thoughts that made her question after.  She needed after. And so using the inside handle, Scout hoisted herself inside, sliding along the rear seat and turning until her back at hit the other door. Then she just waited for the sound of the door to close, solidifying what she was about to do.

Chase laces his fingers with her, pulling her carefully from the stool and walks her out the door. He pushes the door open, feeling the cool air and it didn’t really hit him until this moment how drunk he really was. He walks away from the door and turns to start walking sown the street. “I parked my truck in the alley a bit away…” He murmurs. “We don’t have to do anything but I’d like to keep kissin you.” It was the distraction he needed, hell, wanted.

On any other night, the cool air might have done something to sober her, but as they passed through the threshold and into the night, Scout had remained drunk on tequila and the possibility of escape. Her feet were quick on the sidewalk to keep up... and to close the distance between here and there. "Okay," she had murmured back. Then, always a bit needy, her shoulder brushed against his, her steps gone a bit sideways as her focus had landed again on his mouth. "You can do more than kiss me," she breathed, no hesitation or thought. She needed to write over the last person that had been there. She needed to make it matter less.

Chase bites on his lower lip as he shakes his head. “Don’t apologize.” He mutters as he moves his thumb to her lower lip, gliding it across the flesh as he exhales. “Maybe it’s a sign that we shouldn’t…” because he knew if he came home with scout while selin was waiting around for him he would have the blow up of a life time and would end up putting the blonde in the middle of it and he was tired of hurting people without meaning too. He clears his throat as he drops his hand to his side, turning to look at the bartender. “I’ll get another.” He puts his hands on the bar, glancing over towards her again. He stands up, pulling out his wallet and tossing some bills onto the surface of the bar. He grabs his shot glass, tossing it back. “I got a place.” He murmurs as he reaches for her hand. “Come on?”

Scout had not paid attention to the words that had come out of his mouth, distracted too much by the way he brushed his thumb along her lower lip. The tequila was fully starting to hit her and her eye-lids were growing heavier— liquor the first reason, lust the second. She tried to pull herself out it by squeezing her eyes shut hard. One, two, three, she had counted before opening them back up, met with the sight of Chase tossing another drink back. Lucky for her, her little trick hadn't worked and her thoughts were still stuck on him and the escape he could provide— no, they could provide each other— because the next thing she knew his hand was reaching for hers. A maybe like a fool... she took it. "Where are we going?"

The second her lips touched his, nothing else mattered. There was no drama with Selin and everything else he had been dealing with faded into the background so he could solely focus on how soft her lips were, the tequila on her tongue and being hyperaware of where her fingers were. He groans quietly against her mouth as her tongue touches his, his fingers sliding up to tangle in the strands of her blonde hair, shifting in his stool to completely face her. He had forgotten they were in public until he heard the bartender clear his throat. He pulls back, brushing his tongue along his lower lip as his gaze drops to her mouth. “I want to get out of here but… Selin is waiting at my place… is yours empty?”

The half-cough from the bartender had drawn a blush across Scout's cheeks, her head hanging an inch lower in sorry. Her eyes though, those had locked onto the very lips that had just been on hers, watching as his tongue passed along the surface and words formed a question she should have known would come but surprised her still. "Yea," she nodded initially before the bliss of the kiss had subsided and the night in its entirety returned: Lukas, Shadow, all the texts. "Er, well, it might be? Des and King, they're worried about me and I told them I was with a friend but I never know. They could be..." Scout exhaled before looking up into his eyes. "I'm sorry."

Chase brushes his tongue along his lower lip. Two people, searching to feel something other than the dreadful feeling of not being enough for those they wanted to be enough for. His fingertips gaze her hairline and he knows the last thing he should do is kiss one of his best friend’s sisters. He knows if anyone had dared to kiss Kiara he would have lost it but all the alcohol seems to be clouding the one thing he held close until this moment, the bro code. He nods his head a little as he breathes out against her mouth but doesn’t attempt to kiss her yet. “Does it make us idiots when all we want to do is mend our broken hearts?” It’s soft, the rest of the lounge fading into the background. “Fuck it.” He mumbles before kissing her, it’s testing at first but after a second he deepens the kiss, darting the tip of his tongue out to glide across her lower lip asking for permission to enter her mouth.

Another of her brother's friends. It was beginning to become a bit of a pattern, completely unintentional but Scout didn't have the energy to weigh how taboo this was right now. In fact, a night like this was made for bad decisions like these. So as those last words left his lips, Scout was already eliminating the sparse distance between them. Her hand rested on his side as his lips moved against hers but it slipped towards the center as she parted her lips with the tracing of his tongue, her hand resting just north of his abdomen. She could taste the tequila between the two of them, shared now in more ways than one.

Chase parts his lips to try and understand that a little more but she reaches out, tapping his chest gently. He tilts his head down to look at delicate fingers touching near the spot that almost took his life. A life he didn’t really like it was his to live, that if he didn’t act or speak in a way someone else wanted him to that he wasn’t a good person. He knows that he’s not one, all the broken hearts he had left in his path and lately he feels like someone let the wrong person live when Leo died and he didn’t or even his daughter dying. Both times should have been him and he was sure anyone would agree. He lifts his eyes up towards her when she calls him an idiot and all he can focus on is how pretty she smells as she leans closer. He raises his hand and puts it against the side of her neck, pulling her in. “I don’t know… I feel like making a really stupid move.” His voice lowers as he uses the tips of his fingers to bring her inches from his lips. “Can I make that move, Scout?”

Of all the responses Scout could have imagined, this hadn't been one of them. Yet as Chase's hand found its way to her neck and he was drawing her in closer, she didn't put up a fight; her Converse-clad feet inched forward, though her eyes had widened. She can feel his warm breath tickle her skin and maybe it's the tequila already working its magic but the idea of kissing him, of letting him kiss her... it doesn't sound like too bad an idea. Though she had run circles around the party, kissing other people aside from Lukas as a feeble attempt to lessen what they'd done— fuck, maybe she really had known all along— his lips were all she could taste. She hated it. "I guess we're just two idiots," she whispered before slowly nodding her head and drawing half the distance closer towards him, her heartbeat quickening beneath her dress.

Chase laughs at her words as he picks up the next shot glass, tossing it back. He smacks his tongue against the roof of his mouth. “I am the Quarterback, I’m supposed to be the one who gives out those pep talks when we get murdered in the first half.” He shakes his head as he leans his arms down against the surface of the bar. “I guess I get it. I tend to doubt people’s words when their actions don’t line up. I wonder sometimes how people can make promises or say things but then… do something that completely shows the opposite all of that, you know? Like someone saying they’ll never give up on you or they can handle whatever you throw at them and then block you when you leave them on read.” He shrugs. “But then you gotta wonder maybe you were right. You’re just not good enough and you don’t deserve to be happy.”

Scout lets him take this shot alone, needing time not more liquor in her stomach. She lulls her head to the side as she listens to him go, a wrinkle formed between her brows the longer he went on. There were parts of what he said that she could grasp onto but whether it was the tequila or lack of brain cells, the whole story he spewed was a bit blurry. "I don't know maybe you were, like, smart to leave them on read. Maybe you like... knew," Scout said, reaching her hand out and tapping his chest gently about where his heart was. Her heart had told her a lot of things, warned her, got her hopes up. Sometimes she thinks it liked to get broken. "But you're an idiot if you think you don't deserve to be happy.  And if I'm not an idiot then you're not allowed to be one either. Okay?" She lead, leaning closer towards him as she awaited the response she wanted out of him. Her lower lip pouted for extra measure; no one was allowed to disagree with that face.

Chase watches her, furrowing his brows. He didn’t usually do relationships and he let his guard down for Selin. He had been willing to hang it all up for the brunette but as things progressively got more and more dramatic or more pressure. He panicked, pushing her as far away as he could and the worst part was that she listened like the rest of them but he also couldn’t blame her. He exhales as he reaches out, touching her wrist. His fingertips brushing against her skin as he shakes his head. “Stop beating yourself up, Scout. You slept with someone you love and believed everything he said. We all believe that someone will see the worth in us, the part of us we think is unlovable and we just hope they will pick us… don’t call it a mistake, it’s a lesson.”

His words were helping to make her feel better, not great but certainly less like an idiot. That had been the feeling that couldn't go away. Her mind compiling all the evidence and red flags and waving it in from of her face like 'how could you not see it?' With a sad laugh, Scout looked up at him, naturally stepping in a stride. "Why do I feel like we're in the locker room and you're giving me a pep talk after we just got murdered in the first half?" She giggled, something an hour ago she wouldn't have thought capable. Tequila and a gentle touch were a mighty combination. "They teach you this stuff at Nissan Stadium? Or is this why they pay you, like, a trillion dollars?"

“The night isn’t over before we get absolutely fucked up, hm?” He raises his own glass. “Promise. I take my promises very seriously, as you know.” He actually doesn’t most of the time, but when it comes to his own vices, he does.

“Knowing us, not even then,” Scout added, knocking into him with a little bump, a smile across her features. Then with a single tilt back and the bringing of glass to lips, the contents poured down her throat, the sweet camouflaging the liquor. Scout practically slammed her emptied glass back down on the bar, feeling very Thor ala his first movie, very ‘another!’ vibe. “Good. Because I need your help not be any percent sad bitch tonight, okay?” Scout pressed her finger to his chest, threatening in a way. “Okay?!”

Chase glances over at her as the bartender sets down another round. He realizes this will be the second night where he has gone to a bar and gotten more drunk than he should have. Tonight wasn’t even about getting drunk over Selin hooking up with other people throughout their marriage, it was more about the fact he gave up everything. He has pushed Lunara away to protect her from the PR stunt, from having to stand off to the side and watch him publicly be married. He knew it was only a matter of time before the PR stunt ruined whatever chances him and Lunara had of being more. Especially after the drama when Monroe lost her shit on Selin in the forum over her protective feelings for the brunette. Then… He had to deal with the fact that Lunara blocked him. Out of all the things to do, she did the one thing she knew he couldn’t come back from when Roe had done it to him a few weeks prior. He tosses another shot back, furrowing his brows as he sets down the glass. Honestly, a part of him had thought… maybe him and Lu would have gotten back together after the marriage was over but… He inhales, turning his head to look over at Scout. “You’re not an idiot for believing someone loved you. We’ve all done that. He’s the idiot for making you believe he did and then sending those text message like… none of it mattered.” He shakes his head. “You’re not an idiot, Scout. Not even close.”

The alcohol was starting to blur away at the edges. The empty glass in front of her was proof already that she'd succeeded in her mission for the night; despite her history, Scout was a lightweight when it came to liquor and the shots tossed back one then the other were sure to hit her strong. "Oh but he meant it was me," Scout bit as she regurgitated the words as she remembered hearing them on the phone. She rolled her eyes as she turned her body to face Chase. "It all matters so much. Too much. I hate it." Her palm pressed against the bar top, letting the coolness of the marble run  along her skin as she slid her hand away from the shot glass. Her eyes followed her own movement. "I just wish I could go back and never do it."
