Today is like no other.Â
The duty of an heir destined to rule the land; to be silent and sit on their throne. It was quite tedious in your quarters anyways. You suppose sitting down and accompanying your dear, old father wasnât that bad.
âŚExcept it was.
The main hall of the castle you live in shimmered due to the cleanliness it had undergone from the servants. They do a very good job at keeping the palace tidy and shiny. A bit too shiny for your liking.
Such sparkling things can be found luxurious and fascinating, something worth owning. Like the diamonds on a necklace. Or the coins hiding in a merchantâs pockets.
Or the sparkle in your eyes, bewitching anyone that dared to look at you.Â
Ever since you reached puberty, many princes and nobles alike have asked for your hand in marriage, presuming that youâd agree due to their riches and the political power they had. But you did not cower. Not even once.Â
None had what you were looking for in a man.Â
Due to the overwhelming amount of confessions youâd receive in one month, your family had no other choice but to shield your face with a veil you will only ever remove when the time is right. Quite an unfortunate decision. Such beauty being hidden from the rest of the world all because of hungry men.
Despite this step of protection, your father still begged for you to marry before he died. He wishes nothing but the best for you, hence why heâs dragged a few suitors you might like.
Your room felt more welcoming than the wandering eyes of the men in front of you, some older than youâd like to guess.
The king felt the atmosphere plummeting in an awkward silence, to which he cleared his throat to. Clasping his hands together, he gestured for the men to start introducing themselves.
As he did so, the men were confused and began simultaneously telling you their names, even bowing their heads a bit to show respect. You didnât understand anything they said.Â
The awkward tension arose once more when the suitors started looking at each other, wondering whoâll start. Your father was rubbing his face in annoyance.Â
You felt oddly apologetic today, which is why you decided to give them a second chance to regulate themselves.
âMay the one on the left start, please? After that, you will each follow up with a random fun fact about yourselves. I do not wish to marry a boring man.â
Your voice cut through the silence, causing all eyes to be on you. Your words were spoken like a law, immediately being followed with obedience by the men. To be fair, despite giving them a chance, your brain sort of blocked whatever they said out. None of them had what it takes to have your hand in marriage and that much is obvious. You can tell from their fidgeting and need to appear as dominant as possible from the rest.Â
You wished for someone softer. Someone who would write you poems and stroke your hair as he read them to you. Someone less flamboyant. MoreâŚ
âQuiet..â
âAnd- sorry?â
The man who was speaking stopped talking the moment you muttered to yourself, lifting a brow. Lifting your head and realising your mistake, you waved him off.
âAh, no, itâs nothing. Keep going.â
Smiling, the man continued talking about the time he fought a wild boar, as if that would make you yearn for him.
Ah, yes. Thatâs right.Â
Thatâs what you like in a man, too. The yearning eyes that never leave your figure, the kind of eyes that rarely ever lust and only admire from afar. Thatâs what you like.Â
And guessing from the menâs gazes upon your figureâŚ
Yeah, theyâll be returning to their kingdoms empty-handed.Â
After what felt like an eternity, the men finally finished introducing themselves. Part of you feels guilty for not listening, because youâve already forgotten their names. Not like it matters, anyway.
âWell.. that was lovely. Thank you, gentlemen, for taking the time to properly introduce yourselves to me,â you tried your best to sound polite, despite holding a grimace underneath the veil obscuring your face from the public eye, âI must say, some of your stories were truly fascinating, but I-â
Suddenly, the main entrance opened. In came a royal guard that monitors who enters the palace and whoâs chased out. All eyes that were trained on you looked back to see at who dared to interrupt their majesty from speaking.Â
âYour highness! There are a group of jesters that are wishing to consult with you. They mention a contract that youâve signed to have them perform here in the palace. Shall I let them in?â
The guardâs booming voice sounded out, making the king straighten his posture a bit. This is bound to be a tad more interesting rather than listening to some boring men talk.Â
Clearing his throat, the old man nodded, gesturing with his hand to allow them entrance. The guard bowed in compliance and opened the huge doors further, giving everyone inside the area a glimpse of the circus group.Â
You stared with anticipation.Â
In came five tall figures.Â
Their features were slightly shaded due to the light hitting their backs, until the doors finally closed. Your eyes widened.Â
They had such odd looking outfits!Â
There seemed to be one jester, though. You could tell from the different outfits that adorned them, and the masks.Â
MasksâŚÂ
You donât recall ever meeting a jester that had worn a mask like that. Perhaps one that covered half of their face, but never the whole face. That is certainly odd.
âYour majesty! Pleasure to be meeting you. We are so terribly sorry for our delay in service, but thereâs no need to dwell for too long.âÂ
The jester spoke up, his body language elegant and unnervingly calm. You suppose heâs not as scared of the kingâjesters are known for their snarky comebacks being disguised as jokes. Perhaps heâs done this sort of thing before.
âJester, you finally make an appearance. Is this the crew you were speaking of?â
Your father asks, earning an approval from Jester.
âYes, you stand corrected. And- oh! I suppose you became bored enough to hire a new circus crew? My, thatâs certainly wounding my heart.â
Jester said as he stared at the men that were still standing before you. The insult made all of their faces turn sour, whereas you tried your best to contain your laughter.
âNo, of course not. These are suitors picked out for my child to choose from. Theyâre all certainly dashing, wouldnât you agree, dear?â
Your father nudged you, making you glance at him, before sighing.
âYes, father.â
The men seemed to beam at that, as if they were rewarded for doing absolutely nothing by their mothers. Alas, Jester was quick to respond.
âHum.. Iâm afraid the veil is obscuring your sense of vision, my dear. Are you sure weâre looking at the same men?â
At that, you couldnât help the tiny snort that escaped your lips, unaware of the grin on Jesterâs face widening at the display.Â
â..Excuse me.â
Trying to pass it off as a sneeze, you notice the men becoming offended, before turning to the king. All he did was shrug at them.
The men started muttering amongst themselves as they moved to a corner of the hall, giving way to the âfreaksâ.
Finally having more space to move, Jester was the first to take a step forward, the others following close behind. Instead of remaining at their designated distance, Jester walked closer.Â
âPleasure to be meeting you, your majesty. You may refer to me as Jester. These lovely men are my family.â
He gestured to the other four, making you look at them.
âIntroduce yourselves.â
Oh, great. Another one of these.
The first to step forward after Jester was a man wearing some sort of top hat. He looked quite elegant. You wonder what his job is.
âI am the Ticket Taker. Pleasure to be associating with you, your majesties.âÂ
He bowed his head along with his hat. Such a gentleman! You werenât too shaken up over his mannerisms, as it was nothing new, so you quickly averted your gaze to the next man, not before nodding at him politely.
Next in line was a man in a harlequinâs outfit. Diamonds adorned the fibres of his clothes, decorating him in green and blue. Quite matching with his emerald green eyes.
âYou may call me Harlequin, your majesties. I am merely but a fool destined to cause havoc and trouble everywhere I go.âÂ
His words definitely interested you, from the witty glint in his eyes and the mischievous smirk stretching on his mask- wait, stretching? The masks can move??Â
How peculiar..
âIn that case, donât let yourself go too far, or you just might grow tired.â
Your response definitely took him by aback, but he didnât seem too shocked. If anything, this fuelled his interest.
âIâll try not to, my dear.â
Your expression couldnât be read, but your head turning slightly was definitely an implication that his turn was over. How upsetting, he quite liked your attention on him, despite not knowing you that well.Â
Next up was a giant. Well, not exactly, but he was definitely bigger than the rest. His face was covered by a birdâs mask, a raven maybe? He looked very professional compared to the rest of the group. Perhaps he was a medic?
âMy name.. is Doctor.â
He bowed his head, still appearing just as tall. His height intimidated you slightly, but you suppose you canât judge a book by its cover. Maybe he.. was a gentle giant!Â
â..Pleasure.âÂ
Your voice quivered a small amount, but it was still heard by the jester that was closest to you. He couldnât help but chuckle at your fear. Did he find your fright amusing?
Finally, the last man.Â
He was covered in white from head to toe, as if he was something angelic. Something pure. His wide, honey colored eyes looked up at you, making you wonder if eyes can ever look that big or if it was the lightâs fault. His mask held the saddest expression out of all, making you wonder what his role is.
You waited for a while, but no sound came out of him. The silence stretched for a while, making you tilt your head in confusion.Â
â..Ah! Yes!â
The sudden outburst from Jester caused you to yelp, not expecting to have your eardrums busted from the close proximity and the loud volume.Â
âI apologise, but Pierrot is prohibited from speaking. Thatâs his rule.â
Somehow, that made you sad. He looked like the kind of man to have a soft voice that would match his looks.Â
âAnd why is that?â
Your father quizzed, lifting a brow as Jester walked over to where Pierrot was, placing his hand on the mute manâs back.Â
âI fear thatâs the job a pierrot must carry. I donât suppose you were expecting him to sing, now, were you?â
The king smiled and shook his head, but before he could speak, Harlequin beat him to it.
âPlease, his voice would put birds to sleep if he ever started singing.â
He chuckled at his own joke, whereas Pierrot turned his head to glare at him. His long sleeves hid the fists he was forming from frustration. Alas, that frustration was soon overwritten by surprise when you opened your mouth to speak.
âI would love to hear him sing.â
All eyes turned on you, shocked by your request. They couldnât see the soft smile adorning your face as your eyes remained glued to the man wearing white.Â
His eyes, too, couldnât leave your figure. Well, they were mostly trained on your face, but the veil was stubborn enough to prevent him from seeing the tiniest outlines.
â..Ha.. quite a request there, your majesty. Unfortunately, rules are rules. If you wish, our dear Harlequin can do quite a good job.â
Jester turned to look at Harlequin, but part of you could sense some sort of passive aggressiveness emitting from him. Harlequin sweat dropped at that.
âNo need. Thatâs quite alright.â
You replied, noticing Harlequin becoming less tense.
After a while of tomfoolery, the cast finally started performing, entertaining you, your father and the staff members alike. Your father mentioned their stay in the palace for a couple of days mid performance, as well, meaning youâll be seeing more of them.
â..And now, a special knife-throwing performance by our beloved Pierrot!â
Knife-throwing?!
The sweet looking man slid a few throwing knives from in between his fingers, a powerful glint shimmering in his eyes. It was such a drastic change, you were baffled.Â
There was a piece of wood waiting for him at the back, ready for his knives to pierce it. He started juggling them expertly, as if heâs done this countless times before. You canât deny the sudden interest as you leaned forward, your attention fully on him.Â
Unfortunately, it seems you were noticed by someone with no good intentions in mind. Clicking his tongue, he looked around for any way to make you lose interest in the pierrot, until he locked eyes with a broom a maid was carrying. The noble man smirked as he tapped the maidâs left shoulder, causing her to get distracted as he quickly snatched the tool from her hands.
âW-wha..?â
The woman stood fazed as she spotted the man throwing the broom towards the pierrot a second too late. It appears no one had seen the man do this, because no one knew to warn the pierrot from what happens next.Â
The tool landed near his feet, causing him to stumble and trip, messing up his performance. The remaining knives landed next to him as he fell. Everyone was quiet, before they all erupted into laughter. Even the king himself started laughing.Â
Jester and the other crew members were astonished, glaring daggers at the noble man who dared to throw the tool. He had a satisfied expression on his face. What a jerk.Â
As Pierrot sat there, shame started bubbling in his stomach. He didnât feel good. This wasnât good. They were all the same way. One mistake and heâs made into a laughing stock. This wasnât fair. This wasn't-
â..Are you alright?â
Pierrot stood still, before tilting his head upwards. You were bending slightly over, checking on him. You.. you were.. checking on him..?
âDid the fall hurt? Oh, dear, I apologise, I completely forgot you couldnât speak. Here, allow me.â
You put your hand out for him to take, wanting to help him get up. The man couldnât believe his eyes. You? A royal member? Helping him?
He almost felt paralysed, if it wasnât for your gentle hand caressing his to take.Â
âCome on, I know the floor is polished, but I doubt itâs that comfortable to sit on for too long.â
You attempted to joke. Did you only say that to lift his mood? Were you this sweet with the others?Â
Oh, how dreamy this seemed. Pierrot doesnât even know how you look like and he feels his heart being squeezed. Itâs almost painful.Â
You, on the other hand, couldnât help yours from beating fast. Amongst everyone, you were the only who did not laugh. Instead, you were worried. You were quick to move to your feet and towards the man, hoping to aid him and make sure he was alright.
What you werenât expecting to see were his eyes from up close. They were so soft and.. caring. The most gentle eyes youâve ever seen on a person. They shined with a look of curiosity and.. something more.Â
You canât quite place your finger on it, but it made flowers blossom inside of you, each petal being softly touched by a butterfly that flew by too quickly.Â
He looked at you as if you were his deity, as if your touch was enough to cure whatever illness he felt. Was it an illness? Or was it a blessing? Whichever it was, your touch alone made it feel better.
After a while of looking at each other, the man finally got up, just as everyone stopped laughing.
âOh.. Iâve never had a laugh like that before. Thank you! That was an excellent performance!â
The king congratulated as he clapped his hands, everyone else soon following. The display between you and Pierrot didnât go unnoticed by the crew and the noble man, who seared in jealousy. Seriously, whatâs his problem?
A pair of purple eyes watched over you curiously. You didnât react the same way as the others. Instead, you were helpful and considerate. Strange.. youâre a very strange human, indeed..
âŚ
Night has arrived. The crickets sang their songs just like every other night, making the night feel less silent and more peaceful. The moonlight glimmered through the blinds, adding in a soft glow to where your bed is located.Â
You were restless, turning left and right. Your mind kept wandering back to the pierrot. The way he looked at youâŚ
You were starting to feel like a madman. How can such eyes pain you so much you canât even get a wink of sleep?
Finally reaching the peak of your annoyance, you got up.Â
You needed some fresh air.
Opening the glass door, you stepped outside to your oval balcony, taking in the sight. You could see the town still being awake, a few lights still on from where you stood. You envied them. They could freely do whatever they wished to do without an authoritative person telling them to âgo and take their beauty sleepâ. Blegh.
As you kept watching the scenery, the orange hues of the lights forced your mind back to those eyes. Those eyesâŚ
Sighing in a frustrated manner, you slumped on your balcony railing, your face covered completely by your arms. It was certainly not a good idea to leave your room without the veil, in fear of someone seeing you, but who would choose tonight of all nights to come and see you?
Itâs not like youâre going to jinx yourself, or anything!
Well, you most certainly did, because just a second later, you hear a melody. A beautiful melody that sounds closer than youâd like to imagine. You didnât lift your head.
The melody sounds like it comes from an instrument. A vielle, perhaps?Â
The song sounded sad, almost heart wrenching. Your own started crying in your chest at the melancholic melody. You wanted to hear more, to listen closer.Â
But just as your eyes started to close, to feel closer to the rhythm, to bask in it, the sound stopped, leaving you in silence once more. Pouting, you finally lifted your head, wondering why it halted so suddenly, just to be met with honey colored eyes.
You gasped, and so did he. You werenât expecting to see him and he definitely wasnât expecting to see all of you. Your features glowed in the moonlight, casting you in an angelic aura as you looked at him with a surprised expression. Perhaps.. a little bashful, as well?
He couldnât look away, no matter how hard he tried. He knew someone with an angelic spirit had an equally beautiful face to match, but God almighty, he hadnât registered that his lungs would stop functioning altogether. It almost feels like you took his heart and tied it with a rope. Heâs completely at your mercy.
Pierrot took a step forward, watching you take a step back in response. He waited, worried he mightâve frightened you, but he saw you make no more steps back. Each step he took, you walked further away. This almost felt like a predator nearing its prey, except youâre willingly staying exactly 10 feet away from him. No more, no less.Â
Pierrot was determined to close that space.Â
The balcony was quite near the ground, so the tall man had no trouble catching onto the railing and kicking his feet over it, now standing right in front of you.
You didnât dare look away from him, and so did he. Neither of you moved.Â
You watched the way his eyes remained on your face, never once looking down to notice the thin layer of sleepwear you have on.Â
With that in mind, you started to become a bit self-conscious, wrapping your arms around your body. Momentarily breaking eye contact, Pierrot took that as his initiative to move, taking wide strides towards you, before his bigger hands engulfed your smaller ones, a gentle touch compared to his size.Â
ââŚYouâre more beautiful than I couldâve ever imagined.â
A soft gasp left your lips as you looked up at him. His mask wasnât showing a sad expression anymore. Instead, a smile was plastered on it, his eyes were slightly squinted as his pupils were blown wide. He looked at you with so much adoration, you almost felt yourself pass out.
âYou.. you spokeâŚ!â
Your body leaned closer to his touch, completely forgetting about your initial thoughts. He let out a soft chuckle, one of his hands reaching up to cup one of your cheeks.
âOf course I did, my sweet. I can only break whatever rules Iâm forced to abide by when Iâm with you.â
His thumb softly stroked your cheek, carefully rubbing away a stray hair that had fallen over your face.
ââŚIt is only us, now. I can sing for you, if youâd like.â
You were breathless, not knowing what to say. His touch, his words, his gaze.. everything was too much. Your lips slowly turned into a smile, your eyes soft as you reached up, planting your hands over his mask, but making no move to remove it.
âI would like thatâŚâ
Pierrot could hear bells toll in his mind, feeling his heart being set ablaze as your touch felt like a million angels came to kiss him a blessing. A night like this truly felt magical.
âAnything for you.. my angelâŚâ
