Νoise for meditation

2020 was the year I got to enjoy the sea again. It had been 3 or 4 years since I last saw her and 5 since I last swam in her waters. I didn’t even realize how much I missed her and her  healing effects on my body and mind.  

In August I went to the beach for a walk. I sat down and put Tourette’s  ‘Jardin du sommeil. Chant d'amour sur la nuit grandissante’ on. The sound of the waves were actually complementary to the noise. The sun was blinding so I closed my eyes and my mind went blank. I could sense the wind on my face and I became aware of my breathing. I focused on it, it came naturally. It wasn’t long till I was in a meditative state, I welcomed each thought and softly put it aside so I wouldn’t be distracted. I remember near the end of the album I felt it was time to open my eyes. I remember it felt like I was floating,  until then I hadn’t been able to see colors so lively, so real, it felt surreal but I was convinced that it was how the colors look when you are able to truly look at them without fear or distraction. Since then whenever I was given the opportunity I meditated with noise in my ears and it was intense and cathartic every time.

Winter has been hard, I’m locked in the house, I can’t see my friends, there’s a pandemic killing people and cops that beat and arrest people for nothing. One thought that helps me cope is that one day I’ll be able to feel the sea’s waves again, see her colors, feel her breeze. And my mind will be blank but my body will feel free again.

Coping, by Purity Control

So, the people upstairs continue banging the floor with hammers and it’s difficult for me to write anything at the moment but I’m gonna try cause I’m a stubborn little fella. Today is Tuesday, the eleventh (?) day of lockdown and things are crazy not only because of the corona panic but also because today marks 47 years since the Polytechnic uprising where 40 civilians were killed and thousands were injured by the greek millitary junta. Not much has changed since then to be honest, this is still a fascist/christian state that continues to shoot people and beat them to death. In my short life I’ve witnessed enough violence from the greek state and I have no choice to distrust and hate them. Anyway, while cops are on the streets everyday pretending to care about our wellbeing and protect us from the plague, the only time I feel free to roam the streets is when I take my boy Victor out for a walk. We walk the streets of the neighbourhood for about an hour and we quite enjoy it since there aren’t many people around or cars to watch out for. I usually put some powerviolence/grindcore on and walk like nobody’s business. A few days ago I enjoyed this album quite a lot and to be honest I think I used to listen to them but I am not sure. Anyways, this is some good old powerviolence or what I like to call dark hardcore. Lyrics are full of self loathing and talk of interrelationship insecurities and well it’s been long since I felt like that but it’s something I’m quite familiar with- aren’t we all?

Purity Control is a band from Toronto and this was released in 2012.

Hearts and Heads Explode Remastered, by The Repos

I woke up today to the sound of a drill from upstairs. I am not going to lie, I usually like listening to sounds like that but not when I’m asleep. Well, I recorded it so I can use it in the stuff I make, I know that’s so unique right?! (ofc I’m being ironic). Anyway, at some point I had to put on some music to cancel those irritating sounds. Most of the music I tried to listen to didn’t cover the upstair noises so I had to put on some good old aggressive hc. I bumped into youth attack’s bandcamp page and oh did nostalgia slap me right on the face. I enjoyed this album quite a lot, even after the noise stopped. Kept me company while drinking coffee and making a digital collage.

Well, hello there!

7,5 years after my last post I’ve come back to say that I’m alive and well and happy about it. Also, I’ve been to hell and back countless times all these years but I’m healthier and more present than ever. 

I stopped writting my reviews and recommendations in mid 2013 while on one of my  worst depressive episodes which caused me to stop mindfully listening to music. I mentioned something about it on my last post, but this thing kinda continued up until last April. 

Weird thing is that while I stopped engaging in looking up genres and bands the way I did and more often than not just let youtube related videos mostly decide what I would listen to, in 2015 I started making my own music and since 2016 I’ve been doing vocals in a noise project with other two lovely humans but I might talk about it some other day.

It’s not that I didn’t listen to music, old or new, at all. It just didn’t usually make me feel the same way that it used to. All my feelings were sorta numb anyway.

In 2013-2017 I mostly listened to post-punk/darkwave, some electronic and DSBM stuff, a tiny bit of grindcore, ambient [could be the love of my life] and some noise but also I learned to stop being such a militant-borderline-elitist asshole and allowed myself to listen to and enjoy pop music!

In 2017-2019 I discovered rap and hip hop which was slightly weird phase for me if I might say. I needed the aggression and the confidence it offers to the listener and I needed the beat and the rhythm to make me feel alive. 

So, 2020. Hell of a fucking year for each and every one of us am I right?

Well, for me it was and still is the year I started healing and changing my own ways. Part of this process has been rediscovering my passion for music, listening to tunes that I was avoiding because they reminded me stuff that hurt and music I left behind in a weird attempt to try and get rid parts of myself I couldn’t bear. But I managed to separate stuff in my head and last April, while on lockdown and in an attempt to engage in some reminiscing of the old days, I dug up my old last.fm and tumblr accounts and rediscovered all that music that made my heart spark and I loved it not only because I loved it in the past but also as this new me I’ve been trying to assemble.

So, since then I’ve been obsessed with emo and post hc, just like in the old days, I’ve been relieving tension by listening to hc punk and grindcore, I started discovering some new ambient music for when I need me some relaxation, I got more into noise which was something I wanted to do for years (especially since it’s the closest genre to the stuff I make myself) but never had the right energy and I got shamelessly and relentlessly into new pop music and it’s been going great!

The reason I’m making this post is because I’ve been thinking of bringing this blog back from the dead. My tired brain is more forgetful than ever and I want to find ways of keeping track of the music that I like and makes me feel things. I don’t want to lose this feeling again and also I feel the need to share the things I love with people in general and whoever might be watching, although I doubt that. I thought of making a new account but really there’s no need for all that fuss now.

Let’s see how this is going to go.

Close to losing your head.

I find it unnecessary to explain where I have been all this time.

Probably the best answer would be "lost inside my mind".

Shit happens all the time and sometimes it's hard to find a way to cope with it.

Luckily,  I was able to make it go away -even just for a while.

For months, it was really hard for me to listen to punk.

It would either remind me of stuff I was trying so badly to forget, either my mood was so shitty I couldn't stand anything noisy.

So I kept listening to acoustic stuff and to The Cure or The Smiths.

I can say that I kinda caught up with my past. A time were I hadn't yet discovered the magic of punk rock.

I guess I needed that break for mental health reasons. I am not kidding at all.

Anyhow, I'd like to point out some new worthy discoveries of mine.

Giles Corey  is an acoustic project by Dan Barrett. What you're in for is a mix of country and shoegaze with depression and suicidal tendencies. The vocals-along with the lyrics- are like listening to the thoughts of a desperate man, right before/right after he decides to commit suicide. I know it sound a bit macabre but it's real and your ears will appreciate his music for sure.

Clouds Collide is again a one man project. It combines the sorrow and grief of atmospheric black metal with shoegaze elements. Genious stuff actually.

Chelsea Wolfe is a dark folk witch. Her voice comes from another world and her music creates a feeling of vanish, confusion and takes you somewhere far from your head.

I hope you enjoy these guys as much as I did.

Their work is quite personal and deserves to give ia listen.

Βrilliant. Mind blowing. Mind fucking. Noise.

This is definitely one of the best records I've listened to, in the past 2 years.

The first 30 seconds of their first song were enough.

It was that point when I started to feel a pinch in my heart, anxiety and butterflies combined; a feeling that kept getting stronger as the songs went on.

They are still dark as they were in their past recordings but they have taken this thing to a whole other level.

Lyrically, well, I'd say they give us a reality-punch, giving us truth in words, human/social decay in letters.

Η εξωπραγματική εμπειρία της 30ης Δεκεμβρίου του 2012 μ.Χ

Η αλήθεια ειναι πως δε θυμαμαι καν πως ξεκινησε η μερα. Θυμαμαι φυσικα οτι πριν απο την γενέθλιο εξοδο (ισως ως εκ θαυματος, συμπλήρωσα τα 21 ετη ζωης) εκτος απο τούρτα, υπήρξε και η ανάλογη εγκεφαλική προετοιμασία. If you know what I mean.

Το οτι το λαηβ θα γινοταν στο ΑΝ κλαμπ, δεν με κόμπλαρε ούτε στο ελάχιστο ηθικά.

Υπέρμαχος του DIY εδώ και χρόνια, μα θαρρώ πως τα δεδομένα έχουν αλλάξει. Οι περισσότεροι χώροι οπου γίνονταν συναυλίες έχουν δεχτεί καταστολή κι έχουν κλείσει, μα και το γεγονός οτι το εισιτήριο κόστιζε όσο χαμηλότερα γινόταν(απο αποψη κέρδους μιλώ), νομίζω οτι είναι λογικά επιχειρήματα για να μην ξενερώσεις εντελώς. Φυσικά, προτιμώ τα λάηβ να γινονται με ελευθερη συνεισφορα, μα πρέπει να ανοίξουμε τα μάτια μας και να βγάλουμε τις παρωπίδες που τόσο λατρέψαμε και πέρα απο το να κάνουμε παράπονα να πράττουμε για να αλλάξουμε ό,τι δεν μας κάνει. Ας αυτοοργανωθούμε κι ας χρησιμοποιήσουμε ό,τι έχουμε κι ό,τι μπορούμε ώστε να ζούμε μια ζωή μη εμπορευμάτικη κι οσο ελεύθερη γίνεται. Ας σταθούμε αλληλέγγυοι σε όλους τους χώρους κι ολα τα άτομα που δεχονται καταστολή. (ΦΑΚ ΔΕΜ ΚΟΠΣ, ΦΑΚ ΔΕΜ ΓΚΟΒΕΡΝΜΕΝΤΣ)

Οταν έφτασα στον χώρο(περα απο το οτι μου σκασε αναμνηση 2008 a wilhelm scream, ισως το καλυτερο λαηβ που εχω δει εκει μεσα περαν αυτου για το οποιο θα μιλησω αμέσως) έπαιζε ήδη η πρώτη μπαντα που, να με συγχωράτε, παρ'οτι με τράβαγε ο ήχος της δεν έδωσα την σημασία που θα έπρεπε ώστε να μπορέσω να γράψω για αυτήν.

Ύστερα απο αυτη τη μυστηριωδη μπαντα (λογω του οτι δε θυμαμαι το ονομα της), ανεβήκαν στη σκηνή οι φίλοι κι αγαπημένοι Αληκτώ.

Δυστυχώς, εξαιτίας του απογευματινού μου ντούς το οποίο είχε παρενέργειες στην ακοή μου, δεν μου επιτραπηκε να απολαύσω την συγκεκριμένη μπαντα οσο θα ηθελα.

Δε ξερω αν γινεται να εκφέρω αντικειμενική άποψη για τον ήχο, μιας κι αντιμετώπισα τα συγκεκριμένα τεχνικα προβλήματα, αλλά η αλήθεια είναι οτι δεν μπορούσα να διακρίνω τι ακριβώς ακουγα, κατι που με απογοητευσε γιατι παιζαν πολυ σωστα. Η ενέργεια τους πάνω στη σκηνή βέβαια με εντυπωσίασε κι ενα συγκεκριμένο τους κομμάτι σύντομα θα παίζεται στο ρηπητ.Φυσικά, δεν μπορούμε να μην εκτιμήσουμε το οτι τα αγόρια χύνουν αίμα για την μουσική. Κυριολεκτικά. (ινσαηντ τζοουκ,ο κιθαρίστας τραυματίστηκε)

Έχοντας τον εγκέφαλο παρκαρισμένο στα ουράνια κι ύστερα απο εκτενή κοινωνικοποίηση, κατέβηκα στο σκοτεινό υπόγειο όταν ανέβηκαν οι Γάλλοι που όντως ήτο ομορφονιοί, ακριβώς όπως ανέφερε ξανα και ξανά ο Ατσάλινος στην εκπομπή του. Εύγε για το γούστο σου, φίλτατε.

Αφήνω τις ανοησίες κι επικεντρώνομαι εκεί που πρέπει. Οι Warfuck είναι ανετα απο τις καλυτερες γκραηντ μπαντες που εχω δει να παιζει. Το σετ τους παρπαανω απο ικανοποιητικο χρονικά, η ταχυτητα με την οποια κοπανούσε ο τυμπανιστής ξεριζωνε κεφάλια κι ο κιθαρίστας με μια ευλυγυσία που θα ζήλευε και η πιο ταλαντούχα μαιμού, είναι παράγοντες που καθιστούν αυτήν την μπάντα ως μια απο τις αγαπημένες μου του είδους. Είμαι φάν.

Οι Σλέηβμπριντ, παρ'αυτα, νομίζω πως ηταν οι σταρς της βραδιάς.

Τα κεφάλια που επαρθησαν,  οι λαιμοί που εξαρθρώθηκαν, είναι τα πιο γνήσια αποδεικτικά στοιχεία περί αυτού.

Σε αυτήν την περίπτωση θα μιλήσω για πολύ σωστό και δεμένο ήχο, θόρυβο που, με τη βοηθεια του γεγονοτος οτι βρισκόμουν υπο την επήρεια, διαστρέβλωνε ο,τιδηποτε βρισκόταν στο κεφάλι μου.

Χαρακτηριστικό το οτι ένιωθα οτι θα μου έπεφταν τα μάτια απο τη θέση τους.

Απο άποψη σκηνικής παρουσίας, θα βάλω 10' στον τραγουδιστή για τα πρόστυχα χορευτικά του. Μην κάνετε πως δεν τα είδατε. Ναι.

Εντάξει, αυτή ειναι μια άλλη σκοπιά κι ενας διαφορετικός τρόπος ριβιουινγκ μα η αλήθεια ειναι πως δεν βρίσκομαι εδώ για να αναλύσω τεχνικές και τετοια, παρα μονο μεχρι εκει που χρειαζεται.

most played records/bands for the year 2012&this years greek scenes gems. Cause I love making lists.

Single Mothers. If there is a band I fell in love with from the first moment I listened to their stuff well, it's them. I've posted about them some time ago and there are really no words to explain. Their sound, their lyrics, their whole aesthetics are a product of depression caused by having to cope with people and socializing. That's what I feel, at least.

Terrible Feelings. What can I say? This band just keeps getting better. Helped me get through some tough shit. Mixing power pop, punk and the unique scandi melancholy is what makes their sound so special, for me.

Teen Suicide. Yes, I admit my taste has gone soft. I think it's natural, I need me peace and quiet some times. Great to listen while smoking some of the w and drinking coffee. It is indeed, best 2012 record.

The Smiths. Hipster? Commercial? I don't give a shit. I remember about 3 years ago, on a Sunday morning while drinking coffee I said to a friend whom I had just met "This band is essential on a day like this". When everyday is like Sunday (oops I just quoted Morrissey!), when drinking coffee and smoking is what makes you feel alive, there couldn't be a better soundtrack. They are inspiring and will be on my playlists forever.

Black Lips Well yes, if I had to choose a soundtrack for this years summer I'd choose B.L., especially their album "Let Bloom". It was kind of an obsession revival, since I used to listen to it over and over again some years ago. I won't forget this summer, cause I spent it with people I love. [favorite tracks: dirty hands, punk slime, not a problem]

Other bands I loved this year are:

Salvation. Dark hardcore shit from the U.S. Listened to them whenever I wanted to break shit and smash faces.

Hoax.  For them damn misanthropic days.Sludgy noise.

Vaccine. Well yes, this band rips ears and crushes brains. Fast and violent.

Most played greek band for this year is Dirty Wombs. They play crust/core with a japcore edge and they released a demo tape and a split 7'' with Unfit Earth (crust from Volos, check them out)

Other greek bands that are either new, either old with new stuff out and worth listening to are 

Gutter All star (!) band that plays oldschool hc how it's supposed to be played,from the depths of the Athenian wasteland.Their gigs are mind blowing.

Cut Off. Finally, a good powerviolence band but they haven't released anything yet which is a pity. I hope something comes out soon.

Alecto. (ex Eternal Hated) These boys have managed to turn their sound into something more interesting and unique than what they used to play as Eternal Hated. I'd say their music is influenced by melodic crust, with drums fast enough to make you feel like you're running (fuck my poetic approach) along some slower parts and vocals which are mostly screamed but sometimes more melodically. Their lyrics are a bit poetic with sociopolitical meanings and are worth giving a look!

Unfit Earth Even though I mentioned them a little earlier, I couldn't not have a special section for them. I can't really be objective since I've listened to them practice almost a hundred times (while taking showers, sounds weird but there's a studio where I live so.. haha) but I've also managed to make out the differences in their sound over time and their progress. These guys chose to play Crust, with greek hardcore and melody in their sound, in a time where most bands play fast,edgy and shorter shit. That is a risk, if you don't know how to do it right and they do know. They are recording at the moment so I can say I am really looking forward to their new stuff.

Dala Sun. Stoner stuff. I forced about 10 people to listen to their song "Drunk" over and over and over again, haha! I can't really speak about their new stuff since I am going through that phase where I really like their old album and don't want to be disappointed by their new, though I've heard so many good things about "Gegenschein"

Last but definitely not least, Karhozat. I can't speak of how this band makes me feel whenever I listen to their demo. The vocals are amazing, there must be a demon inside this dudes lungs. Fast, desperate, ear damaging stuff.

I guess I've kinda lost the words

and how to use them.

My ears are pleased by so many different sounds,

I am not sure whether it's easy for anyone to keep up with this blog,

though I don't think I run it for you.

It's all for me in the end. That's how it goes.

But still, I love sharing.

To be honest, I haven't listened any other songs from this band,

but this does it for me.

The lyrics are so real.

where have i been?

lost between courses, demonstrations and parties.

the alcohol consumption overrates the amount of time i've given

to listen to new stuff.

i was reading past conversations with people that are now ghosts

when i came across this cool band Japanese Women.

I really can't express myself anymore, I don't know if it's all the bad weed and wine or just depression. If your life has been the way I just described you will probably enjoy this noise.

The same thing happening to me all the time,even in my dreams.

Same old story, it’s almost 5 in the morning and even if I didn’t get enough sleep last night there is no way that my eyes will close and my body will hold still for over a minute.

I am not a fan of tossing and turning anymore.

I like to waste my thoughts looking at cheesy photographs and well, listening to some good music.

But that isn’t exactly a waste of course. The latter is of great importance

for my mental health.

Teen Suicide, such a strong name for such strong feelings.

They put out their record “I will be my own hell because there is a devil inside my body” not more than half a month ago (sept 2012)

and I’ve already been listening to it over and over again.

This song though, I just feel the need to listen to it every single day, or I should say night. It’s so relaxing, even though the lyrics talk about self loathing and letting down people and what’s sadder than failing to keep your promises?

Lots of things, still it sucks.

I recommend this album to all ye sad,depressed punx. We all get that way

and we’ll just have to keep fighting our demons&leave the people that give us hell behind.

I've made all the wrong decisions this year.

Feeling lonely can make you a whole other person, it can make you sick.

But recovery is beautiful and inspiring and there always needs to be a good soundtrack for it.

Anne is a band I first heard last night. But this is how it works for me.

It's usually love at first sound.

Anne is shoegaze from the punx, for the punx.

And punx have their ups and their downs and they get stoned and high

or depressed and down&out. But whatever it is, either it's love either it's pain we do it passionately.

Am I confusing you? Just listen to these guys from Portland, roll a fat one

and stop thinking about anything that's troubling you.

So ye, basically hardcore punk is about being angry and coping with shit that happens so inevitably there couldn't not exist any hc love songs.

Well, there are many songs about betrayal and moving on but this one just says it all.

Sometimes you just have to say "fuck it all" and take a step forward in life.

Hardcore heals.

As you've seen, I tend to write about feelings, rather than the music itself.

Well feelings make music and vice versa.

Right now, if you asked how I feel this song would perfectly explain it all, the whole demo actually.

Some days ago, there was this secret gig in a squat in the center of athens. Finisterre from Germany played with 2 new athenian bands Narcan&Karhozat.

Well, Finisterre played last and were quite good but generally I wasn't in the mood to enjoy the whole show. I'm sure if I saw them 2 years ago, when I was really into crust and shit I'd like em even more. Also it was good to see a non greek band with female vocals.

Karhozat was second and it was actually their first gig. I had listened to their songs on bandcamp and was quite amazed. They were really good, especially the vocals were from out of this world!I will keep you updated when they release something (they should do that soon!).

Narcan played first, I was curious to see them play since I'd heard two of their songs on youtube.They were quite furious and I was tipsy so I didn't pay much attention to details.

Once again, I realise that we do have a decent scene which keeps growing all the time. At least there's something that works around here.
