While I am not a big fan of using readymade screeners to generate stock ideas – because you tend to substitute thinking with a lot of data – simple screeners still help me in doing the initial groundwork. Also, while there are a few paid (and expensive) screeners available in the market – like Ace …
Calling attention of all you passionate investors! Here's How to Screen for Stock Ideas
New Feature on Screener - "Auto Columns". Screens will automatically add ratios from query, in the results. If you run a query: Net block > Net block preceding year AND Debt to equity < 13 AND PEG Ratio < 2 then only first three, i.e. Net block, Net block preceding year and Debt to equity will be automatically added and PEG Ratio will not be added. Only three added to avoid cluttering the results.

Hey, Wish you a very Happy New Year!
Thanks a lot for all your love, contribution and support. We developed few new features, increased our team size, added lots of new data points and fixed many bugs.
We look forward to adding more new features to enhance your stock research in 2019. Happy Investing!
These are few of things we developed in 2018.
Brief about the Company
Added a brief about the business profile about the company to get a quick understanding of its business. This is based on the company's latest annual report.
Notes to Accounts
Added the notes to accounts in the quarterly results. This helps to quickly lookup one-off items in quarterly numbers.
Gross NPA, Net NPA in Banks and NBFCs
Added the figures for Gross NPAs and Net NPAs in quarterly results for banks and non-banking finance companies where provided.
Important Ratios on Company Page
Long term changes in Debtor Days and Inventory Turnover are helpful in understanding the qualitative changes happening in a company. We have added these ratios on annual basis in a new "Ratios Table" on company page.
BSE Price Volume Chart with Deliveries
Low deliveries sometimes signal high involvement of operators. We have added a red highlight in volumes chart for low delivery trades.
Multiple Watchlists
You can now create multiple watchlists by going to your stock watchlist. Multiple watchlists can be helpful for categorising different stocks or even to create your own decision journal.
Mid-year Balance Sheets
Mid-year balance sheets are very helpful in understanding current debt and working-capital status of a company. You can now see the latest mid-year balance sheets along with annual balance-sheets.
Industry Wise Companies
You can now see all the companies in a particular sector or industry. Go to any company page and click the sector / industry name in Peer Comparison section.
Auto Detection of primary product while searching product rices
Finding the right HS Code classification for a product is sometimes hard. There are over 9,000 commodities and many have similar names. We have improved the search to automatically sort the results on traded volume. So the first result in dropdown will usually be the right item.
Faster Quarterly updates
We have worked closely with the data-providers to update the quarterly results more quickly.
Improved Export to Excel
Uploading your Excel sheet is a very powerful functionality in Screener. It will save you hours. We have upgraded the core technology behind it.
Added Free Cash Flow variables for Screening
Free Cash Flow is the cash left over after a company pays for its operating expenses and capital expenditures. You can now use multi-year "Free cash flow" variables in queries, columns and custom ratios.
Added Adjusted EPS in Annual Numbers
Adjusted EPS incorporates bonuses and splits for reported EPS by company.
Rechecked all ratios and improved their working
We checked all the ratios to make them more reliable and also to removed many duplicates.
Blog for documentation and updates
Added a blog for posting new features at: blog.screener.in
Look forward to even better 2019. Have a fabulous new year :).
Team Screener
Add new filter “Free cash flow” to your query for better screen. Try now
Companies are required to publish their balance-sheets in their half-yearly results. These are very helpful to track the progress of CWIPs, borrowings or working capital changes. Screener automatically detects the half-yearly balance sheets where available and provide them along side the previous year balance-sheets for a quick comparison and understanding.
Get Automatic Updates for Insider Trades
Screener keeps track of insider trades reported on exchange website. So create your watchlist and get automatic updates.
November Changelog: Introducing Export to Excel
TL;DR: New "Export to Excel" and what-if analysis feature, 10 Quarters data in quarterly results, added basic user profile.
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Aristotle
Included support for consolidated numbers and other updates recently
One of the most common requests in the feedbacks had been to include consolidated in screener for screening and analysis purpose. We have integrated the support of consolidated numbers in screener now.
Quick ratios in the blink of an eye
A feature we felt an umpteen need for, was the ability to see a specific ratio for a company in a very quick way. Screener's quick ratio feature, does exactly that!
Quick ratios can be used to calculate complex ratios, or quickly see a particular financial figure of a company. Screener automatically remembers your settings and shows those quick-ratios for all the companies.
Creating custom ratios in Screener
Screener provides complete flexibility to customize the result columns and even create our own financial ratios.
The financial ratios created are calculated on the fly for all the stocks and can be used in custom screens.
To create a custom ratio, go to create financial ratios page. You will receive a ratio-creating form, similar to one used for creating custom screens.
Unlike screen queries, we don't use inequalities but provide a mathematical formula for our ratio.
Creating stock screens in Screener
Screener allows the investors to create their own stock-screens or modify the existing ones.
It further allows an investors to:
- sort and customize the results
- save the stock-screen
- set email alerts for the screen
- or share the screen with others
In Screener, everything is a financial variable, just like the cells in MS Excel. Using these variables, you can create your own financial ratios and write equations to screen the stocks.
Setting alerts in Screener
You can use Screener to create alerts for the stock-screens and for the companies in your watchlist.
Alerts for Screens
Creating alerts for a saved stock screen is just one-click-work.
There are two options for the alerts:
- Alerts for the new results: You will get an email whenever a new company fits the criteria of the screen. It is helpful for the stock screens which are based on the figures of latest quarters. Screener automatically scans for new results and emails the list of new companies every quarter.
The beginning
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
Hello friends! Creating something is fantastic. Watching it grow is euphoric.
It's around 3 years when we wrote the first line of Screener. At that time, it was a personal hack project built on an Excel sheet. Since then we have written (and re-written) the screener three times from scratch. Each time, we received a fantastic feedback and the application kept improving.
As we continue to work on the Screener, we will keep sharing the new updates through this blog and would love to have your feedbacks.
Happy investing!
