okay i now have a follow up question: what is the merit of serving a time penalty during a race? is it just to clear it and ensure that you fight back to your correct position over the course of the race? it sucks cos you can’t even contest it once you’ve served it but also i imagine that it’s not a perfect 5 seconds, you probably lose a couple extra hundredths or tenths just to be safe. i could see the argument that to end up with a 5 second you have not a clue how it’ll all shake out and you could go from P2 to like P7 if the field bunches up but it seems like a loss either way might as well get a) perfect 5 seconds added and b) the chance to contest the penalty

you HAVE to serve the penalty if it happens before you take a pitstop so theres nothing that can be done in that situation anyways

but penalties at the end of the race are more so up to the drivers and strategy teams to figure out, typically they are just left in the air to be added on later cuz you lose less time lmao

however then you also have the risk of dnfing before serving some of the penalties, which could at times turn into a grid pen for the next race (this only happens with multiple unserved pens and bigger penalties, not a simple 5 sec one)
