abel & savannah
Ā Ā Ā Ā The second Abel can see Savannah get up from her seat, he does the same. After whispering a quiet Iāll be back in a minuteĀ to his mom and his son sitting in the church pew next to him, heads for the same door his friendās just used to get out of the building. His throat is tight as he approaches her but he tries his best to relax and make sure heās ready to talk comfort.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āSorry, didnāt mean to,ā he says ā though he tries, he canāt bring himself to even chuckle at the joke. He tries his best to put a comforting smile on his face instead, something warm that is going to make Savannah calm down.Ā āOf course,ā he says and then a silence falls between them. He tries to fill it any way he can ā not with words but with a hug. He wraps his arms around his friendās frame, just like heās done so many times these past few days, gently rubbing her back.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā āYou can do this. We can,ā Abel tells her when they pull away. Heās not sure how much truth there is to his words because heās broken down at least five times getting ready this morning but thatās not the side of himself that he wants the otherās to see. No, he has to be strong for his friends, for situations exactly like this one. He needs to bring solace, he doesnāt need his friends worrying about how heās doing himself.Ā āDo you need me to sit in the front with you? I can do that if this will make you feel better.ā
Nearly everyone sheās ever known is sitting behind her, and she senses that about ninety percent of those people are flicking their gaze toward where she sits, curious to see the widow in action. It wasnāt out of malice, Savannah knew that much, but it was a lot, and the fresh air couldnāt be more welcome at any other point in her life.Ā
A small smile pulls at her lips as she sees Abelās familiar frame, his earnest apology giving her the first semblance of a smile sheās had in days. She drinks in the silence with a heavy breath, knowing she doesnāt have to keep it together with Abel ---- heād be there no matter what. She still does, though, knowing that it would just open the floodgate of emotions sheās tried suppress since the news. Too many things to do was her excuse. Her shoulders relax in the embrace (she didnāt even realize they were tense in the first place) and for once she can finally breathe normally, the anxious knot in her stomach loosening for a split second of relief.Ā
His words as they pull away make her eyes fog up, and sheās quick to bring a silk handkerchief to her eyes, desperate to wipe away any evidence of a breakdown. Not here, not now.Ā āOh, you donāt have to do that Abel. Is Tony here? Iām sure heāll be full of questions only a father can answer.ā The words end up being more morbid that sheād planned them to sound, and the tears are welling up again, so she canāt help but to take him up on his offer. A hand she could squeeze tightly but subtly.Ā āBut if you really donāt mind, itās awful lonely up there.āĀ
jack & savannah
Jackās instinct was to follow her out. He tried not to make a scene as he went, knowing mostly everyoneās eyes would be on Savannah as she left ā and on him as a consequence of following her lead. His dress shoes thumped the creaky church floor as he moved, quickly, to the chapelās exit. He hadnāt planned on staying long, or even saying anything really. Just wanted to check and make sure she was okay. Though that was probably stupid considering the circumstances. How could anyone be okay in this situation? Least of all Savannah?
He nodded as she spoke, unable to find any words that would be comforting. That was never really his strong suit, even during their high school days.Ā āYeah.ā Jack said simply, eyes trained on her as he spoke. He wished he could do better, wanted desperately to say something that would help. But that crisp Saturday morning heād planned only on sitting in the back, and staring off into nothing as they said goodbye to their old friend. Not so much comforting someone who likely could not be comforted.Ā
He chewed the inside of his lip as he thought.Ā āIām assuming you cam in with the funeral party, but I can take you home if you want.ā Jack said, his tone gentle.Ā āWe donāt have to talk, or go anywhere. I know you have a lot on your plate.ā
She tried to be graceful in her exit ---- she really had. But it was definitely the churchās fault for draining all the oxygen in the room, absolutely NOT the fact that she may have been losing it. Savannah never lost it, whateverĀ āitā was. Not even when Judah showed up to her house two hours late and already drunk for prom, no corsage in sight. The memory showed up without warning and she tightened her grasp around her necklace, trying to regulate her breaths like she had done a thousandĀ times in yoga class.Ā
Of course Jack would be the first one to show up by her side as her facade started to crack slightly. His was a welcome sight. He was always someone sheād looked up to, and though they hadnāt talked in ages, his presence made it a little easier. Even the simpleĀ āyeahā as she spoke, made her feel like she was back in high school, ranting and raving about whatever wasnāt immediately in her control to his patient, listening ears.Ā
She nodded at his words. Home. Savannah had never expected to fill the house up with her old high school friends, and hesitated before sending the invitations. She was surprised most of them took her up on it, but sheād rather have a bunch of people she used to know and love staying with her than staying in that huge house alone.Ā āThat would be amazing, honestly.ā She sighed a small breath of relief at the suggestion, standing up straight, her heels digging slightly in the soft grass.Ā āI think a normal conversation with an old friend, without all those pitying looks Iāve been getting all morning, is just what I need.ā
.
savannah price always had the upper hand in life. perpetually in control, organized and prepared. she is none of the above as she sits in the first row of the church pews, perfect posture leaning against the uncomfortable wood. she is too fucking young to be doing this. sheād always laughed people off when they commented on how attached to the hip her and judah were, two peas in a pod. she canāt stop thinking about how true those statements and jokes were, feeling completely empty without his essence to complete her.Ā
her racing thoughts and the deafening silence of the church as people shuffled out are all too much, and the blonde grabs her chanel clutch, heels clicking as she swiftly exits through the side door. she takes a deep breath, leaning against the wood paneling. her eyes close as manicured fingers play with the thin gold chain around her neck ---- a small piece of jewelry judah had managed to trade his shoes and a few coins for on their honeymoon. she hadnāt taken it off since.
she jumps a little as her eyes open to find that sheās no longer alone, standing up straight again. blue eyes rest upon one of her old friends.Ā ājesus, you scared me half to death. i ought to put a bell around your ankle.ā the words are a joking tease, though her face was unable to muster up even a polite smile. she was all out of simple courtesies since judah had passed, doled out to too many distant acquaintances giving their condolences.Ā āthanks for coming. i canāt fucking do this anymore.ā she sighs, unable to even thank them without adding some miserable complaint on the tail end of the sentence.Ā
