“Pfft why’d you think that I thought you were gonna hurt me I totally wasn’t thinking that.” Davey joked, ignoring how his voice was shaking. “Anyways, uh sure. Talk away.” Hopefully Connor was one of those people who didn’t like JD, otherwise Davey was about to get beat up for talking bad about JD. God he was nervous.

He sighed. “I don’t think Enjolras should be anywhere near JD. I don’t think JD should be anywhere near anyone in the school, to be honest.” He sighed again. “I’m scared that he’s going to hurt someone. Maybe himself. He’s too…close, to Enjolras. And I don’t like it.”

Davey scoffed. “Yeah no shit. That dude has some serious issues and he’s gonna seriously hurt someone one day. I just don’t want it to be me, or Enjolras.” Davey sighed. “So what are you gonna do about it?”

Davey was, without a doubt, terrified of Connor. “Yeah sure, whatever you wanna talk about sounds great sounds good.” He hated how his voice shook clearly giving off the fact that he was intimidated. He took a deep breathe. “Sorry, just stressed. What’s uh, up?”

“Shit. Sorry about that. Do you need anything?” He heard the shaking in Davey’s voice. It was obvious. He sighed. “Look…I’m not going to hurt you. I just need to talk to you about Enjolras.” He chewed on his bottom lip as he thought of what to say. “And JD.”

The Locker - Open Starter

Davey was pissed at the entire world. His dad had been yelling at him for failing a math test because he was too busy working to study, and yet his dad still made Davey buy the family’s groceries. Kind of hypocritical.  At least today had been an easy day. He just had to get through two more periods without losing it and he’d be homefree, he could go home and take a nap before work and everything would totally be fine.  He just had to run to his locker between classes to grab his biology textbook, but as he was getting it a familiar face appeared. “Hey can we talk.” They asked.

Connor had been thinking about his conversation with Enjolras for a few days. But every day felt like it was way, way too long. He couldn’t shake the feeling in the back of his head that Enjolras was in danger, somehow. So he went to one of the few people who actually seemed to give a shit. Davey. “Hey. We need to talk.”

Davey put his hand on Enjolras’s shoulder, looking him in the eyes. “I know what it’s like to get let down by someone. I’m so sorry it had to be like this. I’m here for you.” 

“I think I should go. I need to talk to…a lot of people, actually.”

Davey softened seeing how hard Enjolras was taking this. “I’m sorry you had to hear things like this. I truly am.” 

“So am I.” His expression hardened. “He seemed so trustworthy.”

Davey put his hand on Enjolras’s shoulder, looking him in the eyes. “I know what it’s like to get let down by someone. I’m so sorry it had to be like this. I’m here for you.”

“Not to me. He’s insulted me time and time again for being poor and called me an asshole and even threatened me a few times. But last time was the first time he’s ever pulled a weapon. I’d be weary if I were you.” Davey said, and he was genuine. 

“I will be…” Enjolras thought back to the first time he met JD. He was so suspicious of him at first. But he seemed to prove him wrong. Just that morning, he’d slipped and said ‘I love you.’ That wasn’t something a dangerous person would do, right?

Davey softened seeing how hard Enjolras was taking this. “I’m sorry you had to hear things like this. I truly am.”

And I mean, I offhand mentioned that there probably wasn’t much love in his house because his dad seemed like an asshole, and he held a pocket knife to my throat and threatened me. And trust me I’m not lying. Look, I still have the mark to prove it.” Davey stretched his neck up so Enjolras could see the mark where JD’s knife had pressed into his throat. 

“Fuck…” Enjolras was not the type to swear, but in this case, it seemed appropriate. “He…he’s always seemed so gentle…”

Literally. Of course I was gonna stand up to myself.” 

“He…what?” Enjolras paused. “What do you mean, he held a knife to your throat? Why would he even have a knife on him?”

Davey sighed. “I don’t fucking know. This was ridiculous. Enjolras was growing sick and tired of all of his ‘admirers.’ “David. You have to drop it. Okay? I’m sorry if he hurt your feelings, but nothing he could have done is an excuse to blame him for his mother’s suicide. Do you realize how inhumanly cruel that is?”

“T-talk? About what?” Davey was incredibly flustered. He’d spent the past day feeling like shit for yelling at JD and attacking him at his weakest points. Why did Enjolras have to pick today of all days to finally talk to him?

“What exactly happened with you and JD? Because he’s upset. Really upset. Why are you two at each other’s throats all the time?”

Davey sighed. Of course JD would have told Enjolras that Davey was just some jackass. “It’s a long story. But whatever JD said, it’s probably not exactly true. He did some really shitty things to me. And your boyfriend likes to single me out because I admire you.”

Lunch was growing to be a very complicated time. Enjolras found himself torn between different groups of friends, which had never been an issue before, and was quickly growing more and more difficult to deal with, now that some of the people he had to choose from despised each other.

He walked into the cafeteria, clutching his tray and scanning the room. He was one of the first people there, but caught sight of a familiar face, sitting alone, probably waiting for someone. Quickly, he walked over and sat down across from him. 

“Davey. We need to talk.”

“Boo” JD said, sneaking up behind Davey and flicking him in the back of the head. This kid had given him a horrible time the last time they’d talked, but JD knew this kid could easily be manipulated into doing what he wanted, if he could get his own emotions under control.

Davey shrugged, not picking up on JD’s tone. “I guess I mean that your mom died because of you and your dad, and your dad clearly is an asshole. Not much love there.” 

JD stopped, “What the hell did you just say to me?” He took a step towards Davey, making himself look bigger and more menacing. “If you ever think you have the right to talk about my family like that again, I will show you what a lack of love looks like.” He took a deep breath, “You want to know how old I was when my mom died? I was eight. And I’ve grown a lot since then, so if you think I’m the reason my mom died when I was eight, you’ll be horrified to see what I can do now.”

Davey almost snorted, he was so beyond not scared of this guy. “I’d love to see it actually. I’m sure Enjolras would love to as well.”

JD put his knife to Davey’s throat, “I’m sorry you’re so poor you can’t even buy human decency.”

Davey pressed himself closer to JD, feeling the knife prick his skin. “I’m sorry your mom couldn’t even stand to be around you.”

Davey shrugged. “You know… he’s all head of a club and revolutionary leader. You’re all pocket knives and dark clothes and threats. Just seems like a weird mix, it’s surprising to me he has interest in you is all.” Davey didn’t even realize he was being offensive, he was just being brutally honest.

JD’s eyes narrowed, “He and I believe in very similar things. Maybe the mind and heart work in ways you don’t understand, after all, love isn’t just a feeling.” Davey was pushing a boundary Jason Dean thought he had made very clear.

Davey laughed. “It’s almost surprising that you think you understand love, especially considering your family.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” JD snapped. Apparently he hadn’t made it clear enough to Davey that he wasn’t supposed to talk about things like this.
