Chick's Weir
A weir, is a method of fishing that dates back millenniums and is common throughout the world. British and French colonists arriving in North America would have found the indigenous people fishing in a familiar manner.
Usually found on tidal estuaries or freshwater rivers and streams, weirs are comprised of a "net" that extends from shore to deeper water. Migrating fish, typically anadromous species, encountering the obstacle, move toward deeper water where they are trapped in the "enclosure." A weir will capture fish moving up or down stream.
This weir, on the Lamprey River, in Newmarket, NH, has long survived Chick and is now maintained by "Jerry Collins." Jerry told me that he is mostly catching Alewife, part of the Herring family, though it's not been a good year, slow to warm, water and persistent NW winds have limited the run.
