✏ Pelican Town Prompt
Write a scene with at least two characters where there is no quoted dialog.
We posted the July prompt a little early. Prompt by @pixels-by-the-sea, and dividers by @onyxdaze. We'll post ours later this week. :D
Harvey’s pen hovers over his notepad. How to sum up today’s visit with George? Harvey considers noting the violent shade of purple George’s face took at the mention of exercise. The way Evelyn cringed when George’s voice rattled the windows.
Harvey jots a few items down in the symptoms section: stage 2 hypertension, high cholesterol, irritability. Then he shakes his head, sets his pen down. His back is stiff when he stands up.
He opens the door to the waiting room and only then, in the sanitized emptiness, recalls Maru already left for the day. The only sign she was here is the collection of lab samples neatly labeled and tucked in the freezer.
He pushes open the front door.
If I can’t help my patients, what’s the point of my work? he wonders miserably. It’s a question that bobs to the surface of his thoughts more often than he’d prefer. No matter how gently he approaches George, it seems Harvey provokes nothing but rage and contempt in him.
The encouraging smile that Evelyn gave him during George’s meltdown made Harvey’s heart twist with a sort of helplessness, like it’s a wish that he knows will never come true.
He finds himself at the edge of the river, flecked with foam. Just over the rush of water he tunes into a new sound—laughter, coming from behind him. He turns, and just past the trees he spots Penny and Sam, laughing, his hand on her arm; and Jas and Vincent chasing after a pair of butterflies. Elliott and Leah lope across the bridge, his voice warm like butterscotch, her trilling laughter reminiscent of a morning songbird.
Further still away, Evelyn snips a tulip stem from her garden bed. George sits beside her with a vase in his lap, not even registering when she drops another flower into it. Evelyn says something to George, and he responds with a simple nod and the most contented smile Harvey’s ever seen on his face.
A swell of well-being rushes over Harvey like dipping into a warm bath. The last tulip Evelyn plucks is a deep violet, and with a burst of laughter Harvey realizes what it reminds him of—George’s face in the doctor’s office.
I have too many projects to work on right now, and Fields of Mistria 1.0 is about to be released. I'll start posting prompts again in January.
In the meanwhile, there's prompts to write from if you want to, and I'll reblog any that I see!

All around him, Sebastian hears the pier creak as everyone steps forward to witness the Dance of the Moonlight Jellies. A chorus of oohs and awws greet the glowing creatures.
Like stars scattered across an infinite sky, they drift before him. Overtaken by a feeling bigger than himself, it’s a gentle reminder of his own insignificance—and his own freedom. The problems he has now are only temporary—a blip in the sea of eternity. What really matters is moments like this, when life is so magnificent that all you can do is stand in awe of it.
Alex bends down to inspect one of the odd, glowing fish. He’s never understood what the fuss is about. A sadness presses down on him as another summer passes by.

“Have ye gotten a bite yet?”
“Not yet, sadly. It’s entirely possible I’m doing something incorrectly.”
“Ye put bait on there, ay?”
“Yes—triple what you recommended. Perhaps the fish are suspicious of such a gluttonous offering?”
“Could be, but more’n likely they’re getting out of the way to watch the show.”
“Pardon me?”
“A big meal like that’s going to take a big fish to eat it.”
“Oh, dear. How big of a fish?”
“Hard to say. I’ve caught a 200-pound tuna that split my fishing boat in half! Are you okay, laddy? You’re shaking.”
“Maybe this is a terrible idea.”
“No, laddy, far from it. A good fisherman fears the beasts of the sea. All ye need now is patience and a bit o’ luck.”

“At night, I think of her. Hope shakes me. I cannot sleep. Not even the lilting sigh of the sea frees me from this hold.”
“Hm.”
“My mind is a leaking faucet, dripping thoughts that spiral and drain me. But what can I do? Even the briefest respite evades me.”
“Hmm…I’m going to recommend valerian root tea, a cup before bed. If things don’t improve, come back and see me in a couple of days.”
“Ah—thank you, doctor.”

Huh, and that glowing child is a weird recurring dream I’ve had on a shaman pumpkin, sitting, wearing this shadow costume.

The jukebox blares twangy music. You and Sam sit tucked into a corner booth at the Stardrop Saloon.
A looming oak bear statue casts a shadow over you. You tug at your ear. Should you ask Sam? Or will knowing just make it worse?
Lips shiny with grease, Sam chews loudly. You’re pretty sure he’s incapable of doing anything quietly.
You look down at the pale gold beer Gus recommended. You stop tugging your ear and sigh.
“Do you ever get the feeling someone just…doesn’t like you?”
He stops chewing, pizza bulging in his cheek, and points an accusing finger at his chest.
“No, not you.” You clutch the base of your beer.
He swallows, then takes a swig of Joja Cola.
“Seb,” you add. Heat creeps up your cheeks.
His heart stutters. Should he tell you? Saying Seb has a crush on you might piss him off.
“Come on, he doesn’t hate you.” Sam gives you a sympathetic smile.
Your eyes water. The pizza in his stomach turns.
“It’s just—he won’t look at me.” You take a deep breath. Your heart pounds in your ears. “I just want to know if I did something? If I—upset him.”
He wants to laugh. Turn it into a joke. But you’re so earnest, it’s obvious how much this means to you.
“Maybe you should talk to him?”
“Yeah, right.” Your voice wavers.
He opens his mouth, then shuts it.

Nestled under an elm, you savor the sweet spring air, green with cut grass. A bee lands gingerly on a newly-opened rose and quickly disappears into the bulb.
“Hi,” a scratchy voice says behind you.
You turn around to find Sam, smile bright but heavy with something else you can’t pin down.
“Hi,” you say, standing up. You open your arms for a hug until you see the riot of color spilling from his hands—dozens of sweet peas, blushing pinks and sunset reds, daisy white and cornflower blue.
“Sam,” you say, awed. You meet his eyes and finally notice how red and watery they are. Has he been crying? Your heart sinks. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” he says, nose stuffed, “I wanted to—ACHOO!” A bird jumps out of her nest and starts squawking at you and Sam, miffed by this disturbance of the peace. One of his hands abandons the bouquet to wipe his eyes. “These are for you.” The way he holds them out, it’s like he can’t get far enough away from them.
You accept the bouquet, their honeyed fragrance divine but unable to distract you from his distress. “Is everything okay?” you ask, quiet, brows dipped with concern. Wondering what you’re missing.
“Yeah, I just wanted to ask you—oh, no,” he says, backing away from you and turning around. With the windup of a professional pitcher he sneezes again. The roar of it shakes the elm tree, knocking free a few leaves that tumble to the ground. A disheveled squirrel evacuates the tree, tail twitching with offense.
Finally, you understand.
“Sam?”
“Yes?”
“Allergies?”
He nods.
“You didn’t have to pick these for me!”
“They’re your favorite,” he says, bashful yet beaming with excitement. “I wanted to ask you, um, if you would—”
Without warning another sneeze wracks his frame, and he doubles over with the sheer force of it. He persists.
“Will you,” he begins, tears pooling in his eyes, “go to the Flower Dance with me?”
Your heart blooms—a delicate, warm feeling. Keeping the flowers as far as you can from him, you stand on your toes and kiss him on the cheek. You feel him freeze, and when you pull away his cheeks are radiantly red.
“I’d love to.” Without meaning to, your fingers entwine in his. A rush of happiness flows through you.
