First encounter
„What do you mean, we’re lazy?” Norman raised an eyebrow in disbelief, staring at the three shark-men in front of him. One of them snorted and waved his hand, “it’s not that you’re not predators” he defended his words, “but you have to admit that you don’t do much more than laying on your fat bellies, waving your headlights and wait for the prey come to you…that’s pretty lazy.” “I’d call that smart”, Norman responded with a pout. Another shark laughed, “just admit you would never be able to catch a fish the real way.”
“Real way, huh~? Well how about a bet then?” there was no way Norman would let those words slide by and not make something fun out of it. “Well alright. You catch a Wahoo and we will admit you’re a good predator.” “No…I catch a Wahoo and you will admit I’m even better than you guys…also you will hunt for an entire week for me.” The three mermen looked at each other, clearly thinking about risking their own pride for a stupid bet but on the other hand there was no way they could chicken out. “Deal. You won’t catch it anyway”, their leader reached out his hand and Norman signed their bet by handshake “We’ll see about that.”
The group of hellraisers swam to a hunting area and Norman looked out for the desired fish. “There we have it. Watch me and learn, rookies”, with confident voice he dashed forward to catch his prey. “He’s fast”, one of the sharks commented and grinned, “but way to slow for a Wahoo.”
Norman couldn’t hear the others. His only focus was the fish in front of him and my, it was a fast one. He had trouble keeping up with it but he wouldn’t give up and lose this bet. His mother didn’t raise a quitter, so he swam as fast as he could, already annoyed by this type of hunting. Okay, maybe anglerfish are lazy…not that he would ever admit it.
He lost the general view around him, but if there was one area he would recognize amongst others, it was this one: the kraken territory. No mermen ever entered this forbidden place. He didn’t know that much about kraken but he heard rumors and stories of the most brutal and savage men, more animal than human. The Wahoo swam through it and Norman had a decision to make. Should he return and admit that he lost? Or should he risk his life and prove himself? “This won’t end well…”, he whispered to himself, before he entered the dark territory.
The water seemed even colder here, the atmosphere was dark and heavy. Norman had lost sight of the Wahoo and had no reason to stay here any longer, but they didn’t call him troublemaker for no reason. He wouldn’t even deny that he was scared but his curiosity was bigger than his fear and he was an idiot anyway. He took his time looking around and had to admit, that the surrounding fascinated him. Even though he got some vibes of danger, the place itself was beautiful. He didn’t know half the plants growing here and the corals were actually worth seeing. ‘Predator my ass…why do I feel like I’m the prey here?’ he thought to himself. He was all alone, no danger, no kraken in sight. Were the stories even true?
