︵‿۶ৎ 𝓐‿ "come on, ella, i know you can do it." ariel stands behind @verreprincesse for support as they both stand on the giant rock, ready to jump into the sea below. it seems like something humans do for fun and for ariel, a mermaid, it's unusual given the tall height but definitely exciting. for others maybe not as much, she's unsure, hence standing on it with ella. "if you really don't want you then you can climb down, but i think it'd be really thrilling. like we're flying, aren't you curious about that sort of feeling ? where your heart feels like it's jumping out of your chest and we're as free as we can be."

︵‿۶ৎ 𝓐‿ the cut in her arm stings, ripped sleeve during her escape against an ambush of humans set against her entire kind. as a mermaid, her wounds heal faster than humans and she can already feel this one rapidly healing but unfortunately there's no power to heal a wounded heart. just when ariel thought there'd been progress on land among the kingdoms visiting sardinia, one of them betrayed their trust and attempted to take her life on the spot. the guards stopped them in time and eric yelled at ariel to run into hiding while they held them for questioning, and all the while she'd bumped into @devilinfurs .

who did this to you ? she asks and ariel can only hold back a sob. too shocked to think straight, her unwavering hope and trust in humans being constantly put to test. with a deep breath she sinks against the wall, palm gripping the bleeding arm before finally looking up at cruella. "just some ... humans from a neighbouring kingdom. eric .. is talking to them now." she manages to finish but a tear had already stained her flushed cheeks, burying her face into her knees.

The ball came to a splendid conclusion, the duo have completed their mission, and narrowly escaped the attention of the guards. Now, they await morning in the thick of it, licks of flame illuminating their countenances, their horses roped to nearby oaks. Clive had begun to recognize the curious gleam in her sapphire blues. In them now, the spark of flame reflected from them - an edge to them that the outlaw could easily decipher. He ignored it, choosing instead to keep his hands busy with tending the animals, and more importantly, his back to the eager princess.

Then she spoke the words. An innocent requisition that stilled him. The older man merely glances over his shoulder, and unsurprisingly, found her in his proximity. Gentle blues meet hers, holding no blame or reprehension. The noble has likely never been in the presence of a rogue. They lived worlds apart, and he recognized the thrill of blurring the boundaries between them; the danger of touching an ember broken free from the flame. Clive knew there was no ignoring the princess, her tenacity could only be parried for so long before she lands a blow. And so, he strikes first. With an audible sigh, he turns to face her. ❛ I can't, ❜ he asserts, ❛ I am under oath to protect you; to return you home in the same condition in which you left. And, if I were ... if we were to.. ❜ A sudden shyness gripped him, his gaze dropping to the ground, a gauntlet leaning against the horse for support. ❛ It would be unprofessional, ❜ he explains, meeting her gleaming sapphires once more with crossed arms, and a determination to refuse her. Then, like a chisel to his fortifications, her beautiful glow dims ever so slightly under his rejection. And, in that moment, he would do anything to return that glow to her smile.

It's only a kiss, he reasons, eyelids fluttering closed as he seeks forgiveness for the crime he has yet to commit. Before the woman can part, Clive steps forward. He is deliberately slow, allowing her enough time to process his unspoken decision before leaning down, and gently kissing the corner of her lip. A civilian could have mistaken it for a kiss to the cheek.

︵‿۶ৎ 𝓐‿ he's so protective of her. wherever they go ariel has found she's never scared or worried ( not that those are traits she much associates with ), clinging to a sense of comfort around him and the knowledge that whatever rash decisions she makes he'd be there to guard her from harm. it does something to her heart, stir it in an exciting way, despite the logic thought that he's only protecting her since that is the duty he's been assigned. it's a job, his responsibility, and maybe that's why at times she deliberately wants to make his job harder ─── test the lines of boundaries. test if he'd break character, if he would show her his true self rather than what he's paid to display.

it leaves her giddy but also looking forward to seeing @endaether everyday. she's begun to notice other things amidst all this; like the calloused hands holding the sword that shields her, his strict jaw he carries so taut and masculine ( and can't help admire the beard, she thinks it suits him. it's very roguish ), and the lips that speak words of orders or chastisement. the latter makes her heart race a little, gaze all wide-eyed and cheeks rosy with the gentle tilt of a curious crown. a thought suddenly flashes across her mind: next time he tells her to stay put, she wonders what cutting him off by kissing him would feel like. hm ... kissing. his lips don't look soft by any means, they look like they've seen their share of ... encounters with other people. oh, thinking that upsets her for some reason but she supposes it'd be normal for someone his age to have kissed plenty of other humans before. has he kissed a mermaid though ?

the words slip before she can stop them, "can you kiss me ?" the question settles between them, leaves a dangerous thread of realization and curiosity in her path towards him as she shifts a little closer. "i'm curious what it'd feel like." she adds gasoline to the flame, feeling the heat pulsate behind the planes of her cheeks, fluttering lashes ghosting her baby blue eyes that she can't help but stare at him in their vague innocence. in that moment she thinks she likes him. she likes how he shields her with his much larger body, likes how he'll quietly listen to her ramblings about her adoration for human things and likes the way she feels when she's around him; he reminds her of all the reasons she imagined humans to be good before getting legs and moving to the land over five years ago.

his rejection of her request is noted but when he looks down, looking all tongue-tied by something she said she can't help but find it all too endearing and feel her affection towards him grow. it makes her want to keep testing the waters, to see if he'd show her more of that side of him that isn't just fighting, something more vulnerable and sweet. wants to get reactions out of him beyond the job he was assigned, more intimate that move her heart and leave butterflies raging in her stomach. and so, ariel feigns disappointment. her smile curls down, eyes drifting in despondency to the hands on her lap and a small perfumed sigh dwindling through her red lips.

...... hmm, but maybe this isn't working ? she's carefully 'sad' for a moment longer but is about to give up when she looks up and notices clive slowly leaning in. ariel doesn't have much time to think or get excited but does feel the jump her heart makes and her eyes nearly close. not all the way, though, wanting to memorize the way he looks when he's this close to her, the way he looks when he's about to kiss someone. like the curls of his fringe brushing her temples, or the shape his mouth makes in prep to touch another's which she hopes wouldn't be anyone else from now on. silly little hopes since he surely has someone he's in love with ( she feels very jealous now though ).

finally he touches her, but it's brief and only brushed the corner of her lip. one eye closes at the contact and ariel fights the urge to grin in amusement because he's still being so polite now that it's incredibly cute. so instead when he pulls back her head cants to the side, coy in the way she's staring through thick lashes into his gaze. "one more ?" her finger presses to the centre of her lower lip for emphasis, "please ?" because now she's greedy and that just was not kiss enough for her.

︵‿۶ৎ 𝓐‿ she has @musemelodies on her shoulder, chattering happily away as they walk through this fair happening near corona. there's unusual buildings and attractions ariel's never seen before, like a giant ship's wheel tall and high above where the birds fly, and shiny horses going 'round and 'round that children can ride. her mouth is stretched upwards more than usual, teeth biting in grins. "aren't humans amazing, timon ? how can they create all of this without using magic ? and even magic requires imagination but we don't have anything like this in atlantica." she wonders if her father could even recreate it if she were to tell him.

and then the most unusual thing of all. children walking past her with ... very colourful faces ! one has a butterfly laying across his cheek, the other a mermaid's tail from her forehead all the way down her nose. "what do you suppose ... ? timon, are you seeing this ? why do their faces look like that ?" he might know better than her, and alas mentions something about paint and ariel thinks back on the paintings all around eric's castle. "i see ! they used their faces as the canvas. oh, should we do the same ?" and maybe he already had the same idea as her because he's pointing to the source of all painted faces that ariel sprints towards. they sit on a chair besides each other and she grins his way. "i would like wings on my cheeks ! like a bird getting ready to fly away !" very animated in her gestures, open arms to mimic her words as timon requests his own and soon, holding his little paw, the two humans start painting away at their faces. "i bet this will look fantastic but," she giggles as the brush swipes across her skin, "it really tickles."

︵‿۶ৎ 𝓐‿ "that one, oh that one looks fun !" she tugs on @firehonored's sleeve to get his attention to the stall where humans seem to be shooting from a long stick to earn those .. toys ? "that one over there looks like flounder. oh zuko, can i try getting it ?" thankfully she doesn't need to persuade him long and bounces over to hold the unusual object while he pays, attempting to mirror what others were doing. huh, it doesn't seem that hard, she thinks ── and boy was she wrong ! this gun, she learned the name, keeps slipping off her fingers, followed by a totally missed aim where she nearly hit the poor vendor and shot whatever is inside through the fabric on the roof. ugh, how complicated ! gravity is not a mermaid's friend.

but just as she's about to give up, she gets help from zuko who holds the gun together with her, positioning it where it's supposed to aim at the flounder-like plush toy. "ohhhh, i see, i see. i hold here ?" thank goodness for his patience and her excitement to learn. together they shoot exactly at the plush toy she wanted and she jumps with lifted arms in the air, dropping the gun onto his arms as she jumps in circles. "thank you, zuko ! oh, isn't this wonderful ? it looks just like flounder, i'll have to show him this and tell him you helped me. thank you so much !!" offering him a quick tight hug and perfumed squeal, ariel absentmindedly walks away humming the happiest tune the fair would hear.
