Ghosts of the past || Lachlan and Ronan
Lachlan had never agreed that immortality was a gift. Not in his 70 years of life, but then, he was 10 percent of Ronanâs age so what did he know? There was a lot that Lachlan had hated about his life and the so called gift he had been given but perhaps the pirate had a point. Had he truly died that night in the fire, he would not have been reunited with Bryden. He didnât, however, offer up an agreement nor a disagreement. He simply tilted his head in acknowledgement of the comment and left it at that. âI havenât honestly decided if Iâm staying or not,â he said honestly. He wasnât about to say he was staying if he wasnât. There was one thing and one thing only that would make him truly stay. âIâve been here since the Ball and Iâm just⊠Not sold on the idea, but I am here for the near future so Iâm getting to know the area.âÂ
It was something he did whenever he hit a new town. Scope it out. Make sure he was the only vampire in the area and find a good place to lay low and feed when he needed. In this town, though, laying low was proving to be impossible. He managed to get on a few radars and run into a few people from his past. It was jarring, to say the least.Â
His gaze drifted for a second from Ronan to a spot over his shoulder where he could see the boat a bit better as the night sky drew darker. Of all the ships in all the world, Ronanâs wasnât one heâd ever imagined he would see again. It stirred in him ghosts of memories heâd let himself bury. His skin prickled with the phantom touches but he shook it off. âI would like to catch up,â he said honestly. A part of him meant in both ways because he had enjoyed his time with the older vampire, but that wasnât what Lachlan was looking for now. âUnfortunately,â he said truly meaning it, âIt canât be like old times.â He knew he and Bryden werenât actually anything more than acquaintances right now and perhaps he could have taken Ronon up on the offer but he found a larger part of him didnât want to. Not when his true love still lived. Bryden was more important.Â
âYouâre staying with the Blackwells, though?â That was news he was trying really hard not to let shock him, but it did and he probably heard it in Lachâs voice. He didnât know most of the Blackwells. They might not all be badâŠÂ âIâve never met Margret. How many did you say there were?â He knew one Blackwell and he truly hated him.Â
Ronan takes note of the fact that there isnât any kind of agreement expressed, but itâs nothing he addresses. He knows there are plenty who see this immortality thing far more as a curse than a blessing. In the Irishmanâs eyes, however, there are no cons in it for him. All pros. Itâs perfect for a guy who even as a kid wanted more than just some mundane life, and he damn sure takes advantage of all that being a vampire gives him.
A brow only lifts just so to learn that Lachlan was at the ball. He would have thought heâd have noticed, but then it was quite a busy night for him, being at Margaretâs side most of the night and then of course the tragic end. But he understands the uncertainty of whether heâs staying or going. Theyâre both of the same type, travelers, but then this town has a certain charm, especially for Ronan who fought in the war to lead to its establishment.
The pirate gets a pleased smile as the other voices wanting to catch up, but the unfortunately has his head tilting in curiosity. A small laugh escapes him. âIt canât, huh? What... You have faithful promises to another?â He pulls his hand back and raises it in a mock surrender. âI didnât realize you were spoken for, but I suppose thatâs your choice. Myself, I canât imagine staying with just one partner for the rest of eternity. How dreadfully boring.âÂ
However, as much of a drag as it is that their catching up is limited, he lets it go, for thereâs plenty more to do with company than intimacy. âFor now I am, until what happened at the ball settles down. She doesnât want to take any chances that I could be targeted on the ship. I was just here to ensure my boys are good for the night.â He smiles as the other asks about the Blackwells, not having met Margaret. âSheâs a wonderful woman. I donât know how many there are exactly but I know of her two brothers. Youâll probably come across them sooner or later, Love.â
