Katrionel had at least given Kira-Lee the grace of ignoring her stuffed-mouth state while she had chewed, so the surfer gave Reece a secret hi-five behind his back. The slap was very audible. Neither of them reacted, continuing their conversation as if it hadn’t happened. 

Just because a diversion was no longer needed didn’t mean that Reece was going to stop shooting smouldering smiles Katrionel’s way. “Kat’s a nice name. I think I speak for us both when I say it’s great to meet you too.” Kira nodded in accordance, winking and blowing a kiss the fisher’s way. The way the two acted was beyond belief, their flirting constant and unrelenting.

Reece’s voice did drop a little as his gaze followed Katrionel’s back to the corpse of his beloved van. “I’ve been looking her over, and I don’t think there’s a single part in her that could get worse...” He trailed off, and Kira took over as the man sullenly stared at his vehicle.

“Yeah, we haven’t heard of a proper mechanic within cooee of here, but the townsfolk have been great. Every day we get another basket, it’s mad as!” And then Kat offered the basket she was clutching, holding it out in front of the surfers. Reece immediately snapped out of his funk, and the sparkle in the pair’s eyes was something out of a cartoon. Kira had to stop her gaze from wandering back to the basket, all her will put into keeping eye contact with Kat.

“Not sure a surfer could ever say no to a free feed, Kitty. Surely you didn’t come down here just to eat though,” Kira motioned towards their picnic blanket (which was actually a couple beach towels), as Reece and Kira wandered over to the huge pile of food. “So why are ya down here?”

“Me and Rocko have been travelling for a few years now - Ferngill has a lot of ripper coastline to explore, and the Gem Sea makes some sick sets. We’ve been travelling from the East for about 2 years now - I think we met in some town called Amber Beach…” Kira paused as a sweet wave of nostalgia rolled over her.

“We’ve both left the Republic, though. I’m from the true blue lands of Karratha, and I’ve had to hop a few borders to get here. You know, that Goroto Empire isn’t so bad if you’re not at war with ‘em.”

“Rocko’s mentioned a couple countries he’s visited too, when he can bear to leave his true love behind,” Kira’s thumb jabbed towards the dead kombi, and then donned a silly accent “ The United States of the Morrowlands was his favourite I think. Oh, he’s also been to most of the Fern Islands!”

“Hm... Sorry, mate,” Kira shrugs, a smile crossing her lips, “It’s easy for us to lose track of time - we’ll give ya a yell if we do!”

Her hands tightened arround the basket's handle as she took courage to step forward and enter the beach. She'd heard that new people had come into town and where on the beach, but the details where fuzzy. "Hello? My name is 166, I have brought you a welcoming basket! It contains cheese!"She called out looking arround. Was the vehicle the newcomer's home? It did remind her of Pam's, yet much smaller. So curious!...In the end, she settled the basket on a rock and inspecting the outside of the van.

The two surfers had been relaxing in the shallow rockpools just beyond the kombi, at home among the short lapping waves and the sharp volcanic rocks. They had been gossiping about the rogues gallery of faces they had met since being stranded on the small beach, when they heard a new voice ring out.

It was an almost Pavlovian response, as if Reece and Kira-Lee expected a collection of snacks inside a cute little basket upon meeting a new face, they were immediately both hungry. However, they had to retain their facade of coolness - Reece picked up his board and Kira donned her heart sunglasses.

They turned the corner of the van, with 166 coming into view, expected basket in hand. “Aw, g’day Wan-Sick-Sick. I’m Kira! Bit of an out-there name ya got!” Kira gave a short chuckle, and Reece leaned casually into Kira’s earshot, whispering.“Pretty sure she said ‘one-six-six’, dude.” Kira’s soul left her body as she realized her mistake - Reece covered for her by holding out a handshake-ready arm and grinning that perfect smile at 166.

“I’m Rocko. Nice to meet you, dude!”
