A friend accused me of only painting legs, so I made this version of my 3 Muses.
This painting was the first of series I started way back on January 1, but are only now starting to get going. I got accused by a friend of focusing only on anatomy and ignoring the rest of my paintings so I began a kind of concerted effort to fully design my entire painting surface this year.
I made a quick gestural sketch years ago. Later, while packing another painting to ship I was looking for something to brace the surface of the canvas and considered sending this off. Instead I decided to keep it and finish it.
I got praise from Caesar on this one!
My specific goals were to practice more types of skin tones and learn how to transition figures to background in the style of Soey Milk and Kent Knowles; there's still work to do on both goals.
I executed this little painting as a quick gesture between other work, but also helped me start loosening up with my backgrounds in general.
I'm pretty happy with how this turned out, even though it took forever. It started with a portrait of a couple of kids and I added the shirts then made a Dave-Cooper type background.
