Nick glanced up with a grin as soon as he felt the wooden spoon poke into his side. But he waited until the second hit to make his move.

Dramatically, he threw his hands into the air as he melted down towards the ground. "Noooooooo, oh nooooo, my one weakness! It was found! You two will just have to....make the cookies........without me........"

With his hand across his forehead, he closed his eyes and flopped back against the cabinets.

Avery meanwhile was giggling madly and shaking his head at the ridiculousness of his Adar. "You're silly."

"No, I am slain. Different s word."

"....Salty?"

"Hm. Interesting. I'll accept it. Although I prefer splendid."

"Sfigato, I would say" Sebastian added unhelpfully with a dutiful nod of his head, trying to pretend he wasn't at all amused by the display in front of him. Despite the fact he was clearly fighting back a laugh at the other man's over the top theatrics. Turning, he offered that spoon out to Avery now as he pulled a bowl forward and started dumping some of the dry ingredients in. "A shame though."

He added as he glanced towards that crumpled heap they'd slain, to to speak.

"It is an old Sicilian rule that only those who help mix the dough can help eat the cookies after. Looks like you and I are going to have to take care of these ourselves later, si?"

"Souls are on the bargaining table but it doesn't have to go that far. See, this is why education is so important! People have such outdated ideas about how to work with demons. As if you're limited to souls. Please."

Frankly, the entire concept of a soul was pretty culturally based. People had parts of them that were indefinably them, but how it got described changed from person to person and place to place. Soul was used a lot in Western culture as a convenient placeholder for that concept, but she tired to make sure her students didn't think in absolutes like that. If you did, it was just another way to get tricked. Life was just more complicated than a movie.

Mary had cleared more than half her plate by this point, eating a little bit of one dish before hopping over to another so that she'd tried a little of everything and was now working her way back through.

"And then you're stuck eating the mess because it's too expensive to waste all of that. Plus moving when you have an actual spice cupboard? Nightmare." Her tone was light and teasing with it but that had been a major consideration. She'd done a lot of moving.

Mary did kick him under the table with a snort. "We've already had sex and I've already cooked for you. Now you're getting greedy."

"...You are not doing a good job of talking me out of selling... something to eat banana bread." Sebastian pointed out easily with a raise of his brow and a sip of the wine.

If souls weren't the bargaining chip anymore? Well.. that opened up the door to a endless possibilities, didn't it? How exciting. Maybe there was hope for him yet. Never once had his brother suggested demons in any of his medical attempts to help Sebastian.

"I did it just fine." Sebastian argued, gesturing lightly behind him towards the kitchen where there was definitely a stocked spice cabinet.

Though that smug expression didn't last much longer before he was flinching - that piece of pizza in his fingers dropping back to the plate as his opposite dropped down to his shin. "Hey!" He hissed, tossing a glare towards Mary that was much more fond than he was hoping it would be, his grimace slipping away with a huff. "Maybe I am greedy, no?" He admitted with a tilt of his head.

"I think you like that."

Avery shook his head firmly at the idea his arms might be too tired to help. He could be good at stirring! He could help make the dough!

Nick let out an amused sigh, already seeing the writing in the wall. Avery would do his best, but then it would be up to Nick to do the rest of the stirring as Sebastian found some way to get himself out of it. Who knew tht all of that elf strength would be useful for....baking cookies.

Ah the twists his life had taken.

With a determined face, Avery climbed back up on his step stool so that he could see high enough on the counter to be on the level of the bowl.

"I don't know, it looks like someone's a little..." Nick started to say before trailing off.

Instantly, Avery looked at him suspiciously. "A little what?"

"Ticklish." Instantly, Nick reached over and started to tickle Avery's side, rewarded by the bright sound of his laughter filling the kitchen between them.

"Noooooo Adar! Zio Sebastian!!" Avery said between giggles.

Sebastian regarded Avery carefully when Nick spoke up, as if he too was trying to see exactly what the other man was saying. Though that critical gaze was quick to turn into a smirk the second Nick began attacking them, the squealing giggles drawing a shake to Sebastian's head as his hands went up.

"My hands are tied, Avery." He lamented softly, putting up his very not tied hands in surrender. Though his hands did drop back to the counter, watching the exchange before he slipped his fingers around a wooden spoon - flipping it in his hand so that the handle was sticking out.

He prodded Nick's side with that wooden handle, as if to help put up a fight for his nephew.

"I do not think he has any weakness." He pointed out, laughing as he took another opportunity to poke Nick's side gently (albeit definitely attempting to hit some kind of sensitive spot).

"But it's away from where the cat might play with it. Good idea darling," Jess said with a laugh.

Her small cat was locked carefully away in her bedroom and the house had been thoroughly cleaned. Plus she had a set of Sebastian's allergy meds in case it started to bother him too much for the time he was here. It was always better to be prepared.

Penny meanwhile had already decided that Sebastian was there for her just to order around.

"That one! That one next!" She pointed down at a star made out of whole cloves wrapped with a gold ribbon. While Sebastian was helping her with that one, Jess picked up one made entirely out of ribbons and placed it on one of the middle branches.

Sebastian hummed softly, glancing at Penny with a reassuring nod of his own at Jessica's comment. "Ah - I did not consider the cat. See. That is why you are the brains of the operation." He admitted with a wink to the toddler before his gaze shifted back to Jess with a smile.

Honestly, he didn't mind being bullied by Penny either, feeling like he might've been at a loss on what to pick up or where to go without her. It wasn't really his place, even if Jess would probably admonish him for thinking so.

He shifted, bending to pick up the star she had picked out, holding it up so they could both inspect it critically, giving Jess time to place her own, leaving Sebastian and Penny to decide to place it closer to the bottom, starting to give a little bit of distribution.

"...where did you get your ornaments...?" Sebastian asked as he picked up another, a cute wooden bear, handing it to Penny and leaning close to the tree to let her hang it up herself.

Boo snorted at that. "In which case, he should be doubly interested in paying attention so he doesn't end up with a shitty deal just to eat some banana bread."

No, she was not paying any attention to the curl of irony she could feel emanating off Cel. After all, that wasn't why she'd made her own deal. it was just a handy dandy bonus. And she'd been specifically instructed in safe deal making by an expert, and she'd followed his lessons exactly. She was basically a model example of possession in that way. No excuses from people!

Mary took another bite of the food to hide the way she wanted to shift at him calling the soup 'impressive'. It wasn't, but it was edible. He was just being nice.

"See, I don't think that's true. You have to actually like cooking to get any good at it and do it that much. I don't. I like the results, I like the food. But the cooking itself I could never do again and be pretty happy about that. Meal number 2 that I can cook is french toast and scrambled eggs because hookups find it impressive when I can feed them breakfast afterward, and that's the only reason I learned."

"...wait are you saying I can sell my soul to eat some banana bread?" Sebastian immediately asked with a raise of his brows, smile curling at his lips that made it hard to tell if he were being serious or not.

Though... to be fair. He'd never considered summoning a demon as a solution to his endless allergies yet, had he? That could be an exciting new one. Plus, what soul did he really have left at this point?... Did people get to keep their soul when they murdered their entire families?

"Well sometimes just wanting the results is reason enough to get good at it... You never have to worry about someone making your favorite meal wrong if you are the one making it, no? Except... of course when you fuck it up royally, as I have done countless times." Some days, the patience just wasn't there, okay?

How did that end up? With bad arancini clumps thrown all over the kitchen instead of perfect little balls.

"...A good reason. Is that how you really reel them in? A good lay and then seal the deal with French toast? Should I have held off on revealing I could cook so I could have gotten some?"

Nick kept an eye on Avery, although he wasn't too close to a full coughing fit from all the activity. If need be, he'd send Avery to rest and color for a little while, but they could probably make it through one more batch of biscuits before that became necessary.

He glanced over at Sebastian as he heard a small rattle in his breath. Not loud enough for a human to notice, but just present enough for him to pick up in the quiet space. He'd keep an eye on him as well.

"Chocolate spice cookies?" Avery said with an almost breathless excitement. He had no idea what these were, but they had to be delicious if Zio Sebastian was recommending them! They didn't even know the other cookie names he'd said!

"I think that's your answer. You're not getting away with getting around them now."

"I suppose not." Sebastian huffed, shaking his head fondly at Avery's excitement, but could he blame them? Tetu were delightful treats, after all. They were perfect for Christmas too, really. That and... all Saint's Day - but Sebastian couldn't even remember the last time he'd made them. Even if the recipe was all but burned into his mind... had he even made them in the last decade?

Probably not. Still, he moved to survey the ingredients NIck already had out, pulling the necessary ones as he glanced to Avery.

"Arms are not too tired, right? We have to make more of a dough than a batter with this one, might need someone with strong arms to m ix."

It was the damn butter step, really. Putting chunks of room temperature butter into the mix and needing to basically cut it into the dough instead of being normal like other recipes. He supposed it was to keep small clumps of it distributed throughout that melted in the baking process to keep that buttery flavor through each little piece.

Jess wrapped her arms around Sebastian and gave him a squeeze, returning the kiss with the ease of familiarity. Penny giggled in between them, clutching tightly to her uncle.

"Lights! Lights! Lights!" she cheered enthusiastically. She'd be just as enthusiastic about the tree and then impatiently waiting for the presents before long. Between her natural enthusiasm and Avery's own love of the holiday, she was old enough to really understand and appreciate the excitement as she was building memories.

"It's called making use of my assets," Jess replied playfully as she led Seb further into the house. She had a small plate of treats (ones that were largely safe for Seb's allergens) set up next to the bare tree with its boxes of ornaments next to it.

"But as a thank you, you get to put the first ornament on the tree. We already decided."

"Smart." Sebastian hummed with a fond shake of his head, obviously not at all inconvenienced by being put to work. If anything it was good for him to have something to do with his time. Otherwise, he just worked or did a lot of sitting around. His hobbies weren't too exotic these days.

It was... good to get out of the house.

"...Oh the first ornament? Well - that is an honour." Sebastian teased with a smile, glancing at Penny as she giggled back at him. He surveyed the options carefully before he picked up one. A flat glass ornament with a cardinal painted onto it, the light glinting off of it as it twisted slowly in his grip. "...I think we'll do this one, no?" He said, gesturing lightly to the tree. "Where should we put the first one, bambina?" Sebastian waited, until Penny squirmed lightly to point to enthusiastically towards the top, where Sebastian moved to hang the ornament on a sturdy branch.

"...glass near the top of the tree, huh... - you are going to like to live your life on the edge just like your father I see."

Boo watched as he popped something into his mouth that she was almost positive was definitely on his allergy list and narrowed her eyes for a moment. Thens he just snorted and shook her head.

"See, at least you're poisoning yourself on your own time. Not when you're supposed to be learning the basics of demon safety and also the way cultural Christian hegemony has buried the traditional demonology practices of other cultural traditions. I can't actually make them not be stupid and get themselves killed, but I can at least make them work harder for it."

It was the hard line to walk. She wanted to open their minds to the fact that demons weren't inherently 'evil' beings. But also she needed them to learn the basic safety practices or they would get killed. So. It was helpful if they weren't having medical emergencies at the same time.

"This stuff is amazing though. Giving you major props for all of this. I can make like, two decent meals and you've already tried one of them so we're about at the limits of how impressive I can be."

"I only ever poison myself on my own time." Sebastian assured with a huff, though it was pretty true. He was consider like that, he supposed. Though part of what Mary was saying caught Seb's attention a fair bit. He'd never gone to Uni, obviously - no passion or drive will do that to a person, but it was weird to consider what people could actually be learning there.

He guessed he'd never really thought about what Demonology as a major or career entailed. Like what did she mean about teaching the basics of demon safety. There was demon safety? Where was that when all of those demons descended upon town then?

"I see. Yeah probably not the best time to be downing allergens then, no? Though perhaps his priorities lie in learning about demons to try and rid himself of those pesky allergies in the first place." Sebastian doubted it.

His brow raised a bit, another amused laugh slipping from his lips. "I dunno. I thought the soup was impressive... Besides, when you can not eat a lot of it, you just end up making stuff for the fun of it and forcing others to eat it and then they make you cook for them-- feedback loop or whatever."

Though that wasn't true. Sebastian just clung incredibly hard to cooking because recipes were other things he had left from his family. Some small part of him felt like he could help honor them through never forgetting their family recipes. Continuing to make and share them, just as his mother would have.

The kitchen was a bit of a disaster. Avery was doing his best to be 'helpful' to Nick and Zio Seb as they worked their way through different Italian biscuits. Avery had decided he wanted to give biscuits to all of his friends from school, and it had turned into a massive production line.

"Look! They look like rainbows! Look at all the colors!" Avery said excitedly.

Nick chuckled, having braced himself for the reaction. As Avery turned to look up at him, he said, "Yes, we'll save a couple of those for Dad. He'll be very impressed."

"And we can -" the words were broken up by a small cough and Nick reached for the glass of water nearby and handed it over to Avery. He could barely hear the small sigh before Avery wrapped both hands around the glass and took a sip.

"So, what's next Master Chef? Any other traditional biscuits we've missed?"

Sebastian withheld his snort, though a smile still slipped onto his lips with the slightest raise of his brow down at his own hands as he swiped them clean. He wouldn't point out the fact that despite the name, that Rainbow was meant to be the Italian flag - nor would he point out the fact that rainbow cookies were actually American in nature.

In fact it was like it's own little homage to Isaac and his fake Italian being.

"Oh, I am sure there's quite a few." Sebastian huffed, leaning back against the counter with a glance to Avery to make sure they were fine. Honestly, Sebastian had started feeling a small tug in his own lungs for a whole different reason, but he figured he could probably get a little further before the inhaler had to make an appearance.

"....In Messina we made Nzuddi. But... I fear they are a bit of an allergen nightmare... Tetu though. Those are quite nice."

Well, he supposed those could have nuts in them too, but they were optional, where as in Nzuddi, they kind of made the cookie. Not to mention the latter were best to pair with espresso or wine. Not exactly great for the kids. "What do you think, topolino? You want to make chocolate spice cookies?"

"Zio Seb!" Penny squealed as soon as the door opened. She held her hands up to him to be picked up, confident that he would by now. She was the darling of the Moreys at any time of year, but considering the combination of her birthday, Christmas, and her welcome into the family being so close together, this time of year she was especially spoiled.

Which Jess contributed to shamelessly.

"Are you onna decorate the tree with us?" she asked, bouncing excitedly.

"After I put him to work hanging up the lights," Jess said with a small laugh, making sure that Seb had been able to step inside comfortably. "Thank you again for coming by."

Elliot had gotten called in to work at the last minute, but he'd told them they shouldn't put off decorating the tree which they'd planned to do tonight. They'd safe a few of the ornaments for him to add on at the end, but this time of year was always difficult.

"Ciao, farfallina." Sebastian greeted easily as he hefted the small girl up into his arms, barely even inside the door. It wasn't as if he minded though. Penny had already gotten so big, it was kind of mystifying that this was the little baby Elliot had brought home for Christmas three years ago now.

Sebastian could only laugh though, his head shaking slightly as he turned to greet Jess, pulling her into a single armed hug and a kiss to each cheek. "Abusing my tall privileges already I see." He teased easily, giving a look to Penny as he tsked playfully. "What are we going to do with her, hm?"

It wasn't like Sebastian was going to say no though. He didn't decorate at his own place, and if Elliot was going to get called away, he could step in to help where he could. "...It is no problem though, really. Hang lights. Decorate the tree. All very festive."

"Had an ex who was very into Drag Brunch as an activity which means I meant to many a drag performance. Seattle does love a themed Drag Brunch as well. It passes the time."

Okay. So. Maybe Seb had been the person that had pushed her into actually keeping one on hand. But the stories about her students wasn't entirely false. Uni kids were dumb. Sure, they were learning and growing and whatever. But so many of them were dumb.

She glanced over to where Seb had gestured, filing it away.

"Good to know. I haven't had to use mine yet, but it's a close run thing. Like, okay about a week ago I had this kid who was drinking a smoothie in class. I noticed they were getting redder and redder and it looked like they were swelling up. Finally, i paused my lecture and told them to get to the nurses."

She let out an annoyed sigh. "They said it was fine. Just their banana allergy acting up. Because of the banana in the smoothie. They were still drinking. Which they liked the taste of so it was worth it."

"I grabbed the damn thing, chucked it out, and told him he could poison himself after class if he wanted to but in class he needed to focus and that meant not having a massive allergic reaction just for fun. Kids I tell you."

"Ah. I see. A woman with experience." Sebastian teased - though he thought that was cool at the very least. He'd actually never bee to a drag performance, now that he thought of it. Not for lack of interest or anything, he'd totally go to one, just.. the opportunities weren't endless.

His gaze slipped up as she expressed her annoyance with the students in her class trying to 'poison' themselves, his lips slowly curling into a smile as he sipped at his wine for a moment considering his next actions. After all, ... Mary had to know him well enough by now, right?

"Kids." Sebastian eventually returned with a snort, maintaining eye contact with Boo as he bit into something he was definitely allergic to, that smirk never slipping off his lips. "...What are you gonna do with them."

Couldn't say he didn't blame the kid anyways. Some shit was worth it. Besides, like the banana-kid, Sebastian would only have to dose himself with Benadryl for these kinds of things, and he'd already pre-medicated.

"Yeah, well, that was certainly something she was. Dedicated to people, even the hopeless ones."

It was meant as a joke. A little dig at himself and his farming skills, but as soon as he said it, he heard how it sounded. And...well, it wasn't untrue.

Everyone in town knew how Jeanette Tweed hadn't let her daughter go, no matter how many mistakes the girl made. Not to mention all the other wayward kids she'd adopted over the years.

"Anyway, I should--probably head home. It was, uh, nice to see you."

Sebastian's gaze turned slightly back to Tod - though he didn't directly comment on the words. Instead just giving a soft nod of his head and a hum of agreement.

Again, Seb didn't know a lot about Tod. About the things he'd grown up with or gone through. They were more acquaintances than friends.

But Seb knew one thing - he knew grief.

It was easy to see how Tod carried it, but he knew there was little he could do to help lift that luggage, and so he simply nodded his head again softly. "Course. It was nice to see you as well. I hope you get some time to rest before your next shift, no? - I will let you know. About, you know. The chickens."

Choice? It didn't feel like a choice to him. Nothing about any of this situation did. Though, the courts probably wouldn't see it that way. Ha.

"You think?" Tod turned to raise his eyebrow at Sebastian. He hadn't really ever thought that they were the kind of friends where they imagined them down the road. Though, he supposed that was just because he always saw Seb here. Working at the mill. Doing his thing, day after day, part of the cogs of this town.

"Probably just because I grew up in the city. I've never been much for farm life. Granny always tried with me, though."

No, he didn't particularly know Tod all that well, but people had vibes. Some were destined for the big city. Others were drawn to the charm of a small town. Everything that Tod wasn't telling him right now said that Tod seemed uncomfortable to be back in town.

Sebastian didn't know the real reason, but...

He supposed there was a reason that Seb never made it back to Messina. The idea of being in a place that held so many memories for a life that was never coming back.... it felt haunting. He wondered if that was what was weighing on Tod's shoulders now.

"...Hm. I can only imagine so. Tough to make a city kid into a farm boy, I will say. Dedicated of her to have tried."

She should have known that as soon as he boasted, she'd be expected to back it up. Reaching for one of the arancini balls, she began to nibble on it as she thought through.

"Okay, if I'm going kind of serious - Violet Lee or Raven something. If we're going a little bit more punny I mean. Glam Stoker or Naughty Foretu are some good options. Then again, who can compete with the wonderful Bond girl Pussy Galore. She really had the best name right there on the ground floor. The rest of us are just trying to keep up."

She was about to take another bite of the rice ball when she heard his question. "Oh, I don't have allergies."

Ignoring the annoyed edge tot hat comment, she said, "I just figure its the kind of thing I should have on hand. You never know the kind of stupid shit the kids in my class get up to."

"...I am more impressed that this is clearly something you have already put thought into." Sebastian said, doing his best to keep a straight face, though Pussy Galore really had him fighting that smile off his expression.

That brow didn't get any lower the admission that she wasn't cursed with the same level of ailment he was, at least until she explained kids in my class. Right. "Ah." He finally started with a soft huff, realizing it made sense for someone in a classroom to carry one just in case.

Even if... these were college aged people who likely had their own if something was that bad.

"...don't worry - they are in plain sight." Sebastian finally said too, answering her belatedly as he gestured lazily towards the small counter and cupboard right next to the hall, an epipen sitting right on the shelf at eye level, visible especially by the lack of decorative pieces surrounding it.

But obviously Seb wasn't one for home decor.

Mary snorted glancing over at him. “The line between off the grid hippie and adult entertainer is a thin one in my opinion. Although if I were picking my adult entertainer name, it’d be way better than Moondust.”

With an overfull plate, Mary tucked herself in the seat by one of the glasses. She tucked one leg under the other so it swung slightly back and forth as she went to pick up the pizza.

“Oh, shit, that’s a yikes. You’d think people would be better about actually being allergen free these days. Hopefully this flour will do better, although I guess it’d be good to know where you’re keeping the epi pen in these new digs. That way I can save the one in my bag for later,” she joked. Kind of. She did have the epi pen in her bag now, but she didn’t want to make it weird. It was just practical.

"Well, do tell." Sebastian encouraged teasingly as he shifted to grab a few items for himself, dropping his plate easily into the space across from Mary as he shrugged his shoulders at her words.

Honestly, he knew better than to trust anything these days. It was just not something he'd thought about right away when he was younger. He should have fully had another sibling or his parents read the bag to make sure. His brows raised at the last comment though, pausing in his sip of wine to look over at her.

"....The one in your bag?" He questioned with a huff. "...You have allergies bad enough to need one?"

Off the Clock || Tostian

Seb didn't mean anything by the question, but it was still a bit of a punch to the gut.

It wasn't like it was the first house that Tod had ever sold. Nah. He'd done that at sixteen and he'd been glad to get rid of it. Not like he made much off it anyway. His mum--and him, in his teenage years--had pretty much trashed the place. Still, he'd gotten enough money to put him comfortably through uni.

His grandmother's house--that held all sorts of mixed memories. And, more than that, Tod knew that it held memories for people in Swynlake. It was a sentimental sort of place. Everyone loved it.

To Tod...it just felt haunted.

Still, he knew how much his grandmother loved that house. His grandfather (whom Tod had never met), had built it himself.

"Yeah, it's--a nice property but...my life is back in London. I mean...I'm not really a Swynlaker, am I?" He gave a close-lipped little smile. "Not like you Moreys."

"...I don't know. I suppose it is more of a state of mind than anything. I am not sure all of us Moreys are really Swynlakers either." He pointed out easily. Hell, look at Mads. How many other places had that guy lived aside from here? There was always that 'Native' title people put on those who pretty much went through secondary here. Sebastian never felt like he belonged in Swynlake though.

It was something he'd always felt since he'd been adopted. While he was grateful, his true home, his 'life', as Tod said - felt like it still belonged in Messina. But there was nothing left for him there. Everything he had left in life was in Swynlake. Maybe that was why he'd always felt trapped here.

He wondered if Tod thought the same. If he was afraid if he stayed, he'd never venture outside the confines of the town again, haunted by memories he'd never get to live again.

"...That is fair though, that choice. London is nice, si? Besides, you have always seemed destined for the bigger city life."
