Nick typically pretends to be a human Gifted with illusion magic. In reality, his skill with illusion magic is one of his elven magical gifts. He also has psychometry, which means he can experience or recall historical events by touching pages where the events are mentioned. 

He has spent the last 100 years traveling the world, spending only a few years at a time in any one place. He will make references to other places he has stayed, but he typically downplays how much time he spent in any location except where he was last living (in this case, Romania). 

An accomplished thief, pickpocket, forger, and scam artist, he tends to have a lot of connections to the shadier side of life although he is currently downplaying that set of skills while he is settling in town.

"Oh," Isaac set the basket off to the side as he went to join Nick, curious but it wasn't only that; there was a lot of weight connected to that simple statement.

Only a few years ago he had no doubt Nick would have disappeared from town whenever the whim hit him to do so, because that had simply been the life he lived. He'd explained it to Isaac, how the wind and that impulse always called to him, like it was some underlying fear that somewhere out in the world there was some bigger story he was missing out on If he remained too long in one spot.

At the time, so early in what would become their relationship, Isaac had taken it as a subtle way of Nick telling him that there could be nothing serious between them, that there would always be something out in the world that called to him with more strength behind it than anything he found in that town. Or anything he found in the people there.

Isaac had accepted it for a while, because he couldn't imagine getting past his own history to want anything stable with anyone else. But what he did want was stability in other ways; he'd never been able to fully understand the way Nick looked to the wind to lead him to new tales and adventures because Isaac was a different sort of person. His own adventures had led him back home and that was where he was happy.

And even years later there were times he felt the little guilt at wondering if Nick being happy there was still really as happy as Nick could be, or if he was just holding back for the sake of what they had built.

It was just an ID but it also wasn't; because Nick had always been a million different people but he never quite been himself in the way that that little document solidified he was.

He glanced over Nick's shoulder at the ID, standing there behind him, leaning against him some and running his fingers through the other man's hair, sifting streaks of subtle teal through the brown strands with his fingertips.

"You don't have to be," he voiced, "fine, I mean. It's a big thing."

For a moment, Nick closed his eyes and let out a slow silent breath, letting himself absorb the quiet comfort of Isaac's touch.

There were times he felt too much like the Wind he'd followed - a collection of leaves and seeds and dust being blown together into a loose sort of shape by air currents and the moment, held together by chance and just as likely to fall apart again. Built out of what had fallen away or been shaken off, the drifting chaff of greater beings. Words and thoughts blended until it wouldn't take much to blow him apart. Sometimes he wondered what that would be like.

But that little touch provided a focus point in the swirl until it felt like it could touch down again - the seed that would become rooted, the leaves that would become mulch, the dust that would hold other plant life. Grounded. At least until the next strong breeze came through.

He let out another sigh, slightly more audible, and leaned back into the touch.

"It's just. Odd. When Mom and I first came here, we didn't have any ID. We didn't even know what that was. But we were poor enough it didn't matter - ID really only became useful if you wanted to go somewhere else. When you were working under the table and avoiding the cops to keep ahold of your housing anyway, it didn't matter. It was years before I needed an ID for anything, and by then everyone I knew had fakes anyway."

He let out a small laugh. "Even then I didn't use my real birth date on it. I was already too old."

"Right. Avery, do we pick up snapping turtles? I'm just curious, because I forget the rules." Mads said.

Poor turtle.

He was probably just trying to live his life before Avery came along.

Instantly, Avery changed tack now that Uncle Mads was looking at him that way. With big eyes, he carefully held the turtle close to him protectively.

"But he was lonely at the lake all by himself! He got lost and I told him he could stay in my pond instead where I could visit him all the time and he said yes and he's very tired so we should probably take him home."

Matilda’s sniffling paused. Ting shot Nick a grateful smile. 

Their paths had crossed enough that Ting did consider Nick a friend, even if it was the sort of friendship that mostly involved inviting each other to larger gatherings and making small talk when they ran into each other. Not that there was anything wrong with that sort of friend. Ting liked those sorts of friends. She just knew that many people out there didn’t consider those sorts of friends to be friends.

Well, Ting-Ting always thought life was nicer when you considered more people friends.

“Do you remember where you last had Moo Moo?” Ting asked Matilda.

Matilda, still with big fat tears in her eyes, shook her head no.

“Okay… what game were you playing?” she asked, instead. 

“Pirates!” Matilda said and she pointed to the lake.

Ting looked back at Nick.

“Well, I guess that’s as helpful a hint as any.”

The questions had stalled the tears for now which was a good sign. Nick had a variety of small tricks he could have used as well, up to and including bribery, but this was the eaiest. He'd save the sweets for if she started to spiral down again.

"To the lake it is! Lead the way Captain Matilda and First Mate Ting-Ting." He gave the child a salute before standing up and tucking his book back in his pocket.

Out of habit, he glanced towards the lake and caught the small stream of bubbles that meant Avery was there. Good enough.

"Why don't you tell me about your game of pirates? It sounds like a fun one."

Guinevere's doors were wide open as Barley rolled up his sleeves. While Barley had done a lot of work on his van over the years, trying to figure out how to elf-proof all of the finer details was a bit beyond his normal skills. With the wedding reception for Ian and Tony coming up, though, he wanted to be sure all of their cousins could hang out wherever they liked, including the van.

For most of Barley's life, he's counted his lucky stars that he didn't have the allergies that most elves had. His mother was always careful but Barley had held his own anxieties about her safety close to the chest. Growing up, he'd tried to grab at metal objects before she could like doorknobs or tools to ensure that they would be safe materials for her.

Felt a little surreal to do that for her family now.

"Hey Nick!" Barley greeted the older cousin, a lazy wave tossed in his direction. Luca had already come but Barley had given them the directions to stay at a distance for now. He'd brought out some ice cream, though, to beat some of the creeping afternoon heat. "Ready to rumble?"

Nick and Barley had bonded early on over a shared love of their vans. It was a strange fixation for elves to have, but once you had it, there was no point explaining it to someone else who understood. They'd discussed fun paint jobs over the years, they'd talked about various engine troubles, and sighed over the ways they'd needed to modify the vans to keep them running.

The one difference was that Nick had a mild version of the elf allergy which meant he'd needed to learn how to safely elf proof the whole thing to be able to function. Barley was only working on that now. But he was happy to share his skills.

Nick saw Luca pouting slightly and sighing down at their phone, nibbling at the ice cream that had come out. Typical, but smarter to start with considering Luca was the most allergic of all of them there.

"Hiya Barley. What's on the docket for today?"

Everything Has Changed || Colorwild

He'd been upstairs for a while, long enough in fact to have missed Belle stopping by while he was busy going through boxes in one of the hall closets trying to tackle the ever-growing task of sorting through clothes Avery couldn't wear and gathering up the ones he still could to do laundry. Kids grew too fast, sometimes it seems like they manage to do that overnight practically, and it seemed that elves were not an exception to that rule. Avery hadn't quite caught up to his peers in height but he was getting closer and maybe he was just going to be short; Isaac figured that would work itself out however it did.

He couldn't say he didn't miss when Avery had still been small enough to carry, maybe a little; he'd seen his students' parents go through that struggle every year but it felt different when it was your own baby growing up.

Even right then he was next door playing with Penny rather than running around the house and Isaac was wondering where to find a larger size of one of Avery's favorite shark shirts while it still was a favorite.

He finally headed downstairs, laundry basket in hand as he paused in the hallway, spotting Nick.

"Hey," he spoke up; the room was nearly silent so it was dull and only a bare wash of hues but he didn't need that to see Nick was lost in thought. After all that time he didn't need magic at all to pick up the subtle signs or, in that case, the very obvious ones, "you okay?"

The strangest part of all was that Nick didn't hear Isaac's footsteps.

Most of the time, it was nearly impossible to surprise Nick. His reflexes had been honed under the assumption that Danger Was Always Present, and he'd been proved right over and over again. Even deep in thought, some part of his awareness was always set to listen for changes tot he environment in case he needed to focus.

The rare occasions where he'd learned to filter out those sounds was when they had been integrated to his core as being connected to something 'safe'. It meant his mother had the ability to surprise him. The kids often did because they never brought danger with them.

In this moment, Nick didn't hear Isaac's footsteps which meant he was surprised. it also meant he was safe here. He couldn't ignore the twin sensations and the ways they unsettled him in other ways.

"Yeah. Yeah I'm fine." He paused. "New ID's here."

Things Dads Do || Wild Howl

It wasn’t just a Sigh — but a Wistful Sigh. 

It was a beautiful one too, a lovely grey. Maybe it was because Nick had just been describing the seaside, but Howl though it rather looked like morning mist on the ocean — that sort of almost melancholy grey that lingered.

Perhaps Nick Wilde missed the ocean. Howl wondered if he'd grown up near there or something. Whatever that wistfulness was, it clouded the Sigh oh-so-elegantly.

He itched to collect it —

Actually, he did. Why not? 

They raised their hand, guiding the Wistful Sigh through the air. The moment it touched Howl’s fingers it manifested and became visible to anyone else looking. It slinked through Howl’s hand and he guided it to a vial that floated out of his cloak.

“Apologies,” he said. “I just couldn’t resist a good Wistful Sigh like that. Always a bit awkward in the middle of conversation, but well — I’ll owe you a small charm on the house.” He winked.

Nick felt the sudden shift in the air as soon as the magic began.

Perhaps he should have expected it. He'd been around sorcerers generally, and Howl in particular, for long enough to know how they could be in moments when they found that touch of magic. It was part of why it was so much easier for Nick to pretend he was Gifted with illusion instead of any kind of sorcerer.

But in this case, it still caught him off guard. Because it forced him to realize what he was thinking about on a level that he'd been lying to himself for long enough he thought it had been successful.

"No, no, understandable enough. Can't pass up a good opportunity like that."

But he could feel the question in it. The acknowledgement of it. "This is the longest I've stayed in one place...ever I believe. It's an adjustment." Which was a bit of an understatement.

Taking an Interest - Nessie

Jessie watched the card disappear and rolled her eyes fondly at Nick. Once a hustler, always a hustler, regardless of where their paths took them, there were some instincts that were too well ingrained to die.

"Well the good news is, that this route allows you to hand over a lot of control and avoid doing terribly boring things like reading through the stock-market columns in the newspaper," Jessie joked with him, knowing that it wasn't truly so much that. But how did one talk about the other things? She simply tried not to.

"Come on, let's go and settle down somewhere a little more comfortable," she suggested, loading up a tray with the cafetiere while it brewed, and a cup and saucer for him. "That's more than enough business for the afternoon."

She led the way back through to the hall, and then off to the other wing of the house, down towards the snug, where her records and books lay waiting.

Nick exaggerated the shudder at that. "I only ever read those when I was picking out targets before. I'd like to keep it that way."

True enough in a sense. Find the people who either were low down and on the way up, they had enough confidence and hunger that you could sell them a chance at something better. Find the people who had been at the top and on the way down, you could sell them the fix that would send them back up. Figure out who they were married to, you likely had a spouse that was currently being ignored while business was the focus, and they might want a listening ear and a dream of love.

There were a lot of ways to make the stock market work for you if you were enterprising enough.

He followed Jessie back to the snug, settling in with their drinks and their tea. "So, anything else I should know? Anything exciting in your part of the town?"

Should be in a few months, Nick says, and Seamus nods, filing the information away. Of course it would. It dis take time. Even though he'd not partaken while Allona was alive and had, instead, given her his name posthumously as she'd dictated, he still...new the process.

He'd had the ring. He still did. It was locked in his safe, along with her letters and the miscellaneous bits and bobs of another life he still clung to some nights when the wanting for the bottle hit hard.

"I can imagine that'll be uncomfortable fer ye," he teases, eyes crinkling as he shakes his head. "Be good fer ye. But th' offer 's open, an' ye can tell Isaac th' same, eh? He's family, far as 'm concerned."

The same as Nick was. Always had been. Would be. There was too much to say, though, so he didn't.

"Ye at least got any ideas tah share? Or ye jus' gonna drop that news on me 'en stay tight-mouthed."

Nick shrugged. "I don't care that much about his family. But he does, and he'll want them to be there and be happy. Not like much of mine will be able to make it over."

His mom would likely swing back in, and he'd have Seamus. Maybe Jessie if she didn't disappear into the wilderness just to prove a point. But it wasn't like any of the rest of his elf family would cross over to the human world, and there was no way for Isaac to go there. It was one of those simple facts that even Nick knew couldn't be cheated.

He chuckled, swirling his glass. "I have guesses, not ideas. I'm sure there will be a lot of colors, because its Isaac, so no way we're sticking to only two. The food will be good. The decorations will be bright. And I'm going to do my best to snag him for one dance at minimum."

"Mostly, I'm worried about the cake. I know the mark up is literally criminal, speaking as a former criminal, but fancy wedding cake is what its all about."

New Friendship Level Unlocked || Natter

Hatter gave a little nod of acknowledgement. This made sense. He hoped the yet would come to fruition for the other man. Though, he might have been thinking the same thing as Nick in regards to when that might be since he had a child now and Morey was the (not so) newly elected mayor. It might prove hard to plan a holiday of any substantial time. He thought they would be able to figure it out– Nick was, admittedly, an intelligent person.

He took a drink of tea, needing the subtle comfort at the use of the word wedding. A reminder that Nick had been there that day. Both a good thing and a bad thing. Good because...community, or whatever. Bad because he had seen...everything.

"I don't know," he answered honestly. With Mu-yeol, there could come a day where he might deep dive into the likes of anything and come back up with a desire to go. And Hatter knew he would do whatever it took to make it happen, should he only ask. "As far as I know, Mr. Bae's travel plans mostly involve places in East Asia." And his plans were Hatter's plans. He tilted his head a little, "They're not as funny about Magic over there as they are here, are they? It would be alright to bring Avery?"

The kid would probably enjoy an island surrounded by water.

There was something so fascinating and a little bit charming in the fact that Hatter still referred to him as Mr. Bae. They were fully married, which Nick was fairly certain gave Hatter first name privileges in any culture. But that wasn't how they were.

One of those little details that was so fully human. Then again, it was like an elf to pay attention to the nuance of names. Particularly in Jubilee where they chose their own and could change it depending on their own changing feelings or changes in their life circumstances. Who you came from might always be true, but your name reflected who you were and how you wanted people to see you. It made it interesting.

The mention of Avery had that itch crawling back up his spine. It would be a long time before they went anywhere that didn't involve an isolated beach Nick had paid for.

"Ah, probably not until he's older and has a little more confidence. The Caribbean is okay with Magicks generally, but sea elves are a little too strange. Too close to mermaids and too rare for anyone to have encountered them. That kind of thing still gets enough judgement I'd rather avoid it. Plus with his lung issues, a plane flight of that length would be tough."

Nick had long ago adapted enough to handle a plane flight of any kind and not end up feeling mroe than a little dizzy, but he wasn't going to put Avery through that.

"East Asia has a lot of incredible places to go. I'm not sure how much my memory matches reality, but I'll be curious to hear."

And Mads did not have time for situations today.

As soon as Mads spoke, Avery froze as if that would make the turtle in his hands less conspicuous. Maybe if he stood really still...

Of course, that was when it yawned and let out a loud snap. "It's fine! Everything is fine. No sit-situ-situations," Avery sounded out slowly, smiling as reassuringly as possible.

"I'll double-check, but I'm sure that would be fine," Jessie reassured Nick as she went about making him his drink. "In fact, I can- one sec," she held up a finger and finished pouring the water before she disappeared off deeper into the house. There was the sound of a few cupboards opening before Jessie came back with a card in her hand that she slid across the counter to him.

"Here, those are the contacts for you. But I'm sure if I let them know to expect to hear from you, and you let them know I've referred you, things should go fairly smoothly."

It was all just ... different, to try and take on this position of admitting how very long-lived you were.

Nick took hold of the card, looking down at it for a moment. Out of habit, he used a sleight of hand trick to make it disappear before it reappeared back in his other hand.

Silly. Sure. But in some ways it was comforting to show off a little of that skill instead of grappling with what the card represented.

He'd make the call. Maybe not today, but soon. He'd asked Jessie for help, and even that had been a long slow process of trying to get himself there. But it didn't change the persistent itch along his spine at needing to have the conversation. It was one thing when it was Jessie who already knew, who knew because they'd stumbled into each other after decades. It was another to say it on purpose to a stranger.

"This makes me feel disgustingly grown up. I was enjoying avoiding this," he said, half jokingly.

Nick couldn't say how long he'd been sitting there. The visit from Belle had been brief. She'd stopped by, dropped everything off, given him a few cautious words, and then swept out again onto whichever other errand she was running that day.

For her, this was a small matter after all. Relatively ordinary and every day.

He was the one who had collapsed in his seat and simply stared into space after she'd gone, staring down at the document in his hands. It was such a little thing. How did it mean so much?

There was so much he should be doing. He should probably start dinner. He should pick up the living room. He should...

The thoughts drifted away again as he stared back down at the identification in his hand.

"I imagine I'm never going to make everyone happy, that's just part of it. I just want to make sure I'm addressing the things that are actually issues or problems for town since I can't make everyone happy." Isaac would have liked that idealistic outcome where everyone got what they wanted but that really would have taken a very powerful bout of town magic. And even if everything turned ideal, it would never be ideal for everyone.

It just made him want to try harder though; maybe somewhere in the mix there was a solution that was a little closer to even ground in some things.

"You forget how many siblings I have and how many of them learn to cook growing up; I have suffered some truly questionable attempts at food and survived." He chuckled; that was definitely a lot of creativity when it came to kids cooking, sometimes not in the best ways. But that was one of the more interesting parts of parenting; trying to navigate creativity that boarded on the line of horrifying.

The question earned Nick a side-eyed look, but an amused one. "Well it certainly isn't discussing my shortcomings of the day."

Nick smiled slightly, even as he couldn't help but worry. Isaac, the ever optimist. He would listen to every moron, give weight to their words, and carry them home only to do the same thing the next day. It was why he'd worried about Isaac getting involved in politics in the first place, but he wasn't going to stand in the way of it.

Just wish that he could kick the ass of a few of those morons. At least every once in awhile.

"I didn't forget. I'm just pointing out the experimental phase is coming and it will involve much more fish than you probably had growing up. I'll do my best to avid any outright poisonings with it."

He chuckled at that and slid his hands down Isaac's arms to interlace with his fingers. "As if I would ever discuss those. That impleis you ahve shortcomings."

Things Dads Do || Wild Howl

“She wants to visit London — mostly to see Opal. Though she did also make a big deal about the Ferris wheel and wanting to be as high in the sky as possible.” 

Then, Howl pinched the bridge of his nose.

“She also wants to go to Sidneyland. Her little friend Jackson who moved away apparently has been really, really talking about it. They video chat sometimes and now she’s got it in her head that we should meet up with Jackson’s mum and do a Sidneyland vacation.”

Howl did not want to go near a theme park. He most certainly did not want to go with Jackson and his insufferable mother. 

“I think we can make London happen,” Howl declared. “For her birthday, possibly.” He raised both eyebrows. “And yourself? Any big absences for the mayor the townsfolk ought to know about?”

They jested, of course. They didn’t really care whether or not a mayor was in Town Hall. The town functioned the same regardless.

He winced companionably as soon as he heard the story about Sidneyland. "Avery's talked about going to Sidneyland too, and he doesn't even have Jackson to act as a lure. London sounds like a much safer trip."

He chuckled at Howl's question.

"It'll depend what I can talk Isaac into. Avery is always looking for time to spend in the ocean, and Isaac doesn't want to leave town for too long. But the past few summers we've spent a couple days on the coast, and that works as a compromise for now."

It was one of the few places where Nick could guarantee privacy after all. Money bought space, and that way he could guarantee that no one would see Avery in his elf form as he swam around. He might tolerate Avery being open here in Swynlake, but elsewhere he didn't want to risk anyone seeing their son that Nick hadn't approved. Not until Avery was capable of defending himself.

Although Nick was feeling that itch that came from being in one place this long. A trip to the coast was all well and good, but he felt that pull towards something new. It was hard to resist.

He sighed, not aware of the wistful edge to it. "But since Isaac has a summer birthday, that's usually a good time to talk him into a trip."

Jewels might be portable but they were also a pain in the arse to convert into cold hard cash when you needed it. Stil, it was academic enough that she gave him a good-natured shake of the head.

"Well, I use a firm who are ... like me," she explained. They always danced around the subject of her exact nature, even if she knew that Nick knew enough to know, by now. If he didn't, she would have been disappointed in him. "So they're very well equipped to handle the sort of challenges that come with handling a long-term portfolio, and - it has to be said - to handle the long term trends of the markets."

Having an investment manager who had seen it all before was deeply handy.

"They do prefer to work with clients with a certain size of portfolio, but I think you'll be alright."

She knew Nick had his fair share of money.

"I think we have that part covered."

Not through any work of his own of course. He had Seamus to thank for that. He'd dumped money into their company because at the time they were partners and he'd wanted to help Seamus finally get ahead. In the years of his disappearance, Seamus had tended that investment without knowing if Nick would ever be back to claim that part. He'd signed it over.

It meant Nick now had a stupid amount of money. Enough to indulge almost any whim, or to buy freedom for decades. Maybe centuries. Not necessary a lifetime's worth for him - unless someone else kept tending it that way.
