Light wasn't pleased to hear such a simple description of Ryuga's reason to be there. It wasn't just "because college it's fun" no, Light knew there was something else, something hiding behind such a punctual phrase. It was more than evident Ryuga was hiding it, obviously he wasn't going to tell it just like that in front of everyone, and he probably wouldn't in the future either.
"So you enrolled because it's fun eh? I highly doubt that. Whatever the real reason is, it will come clear in the future, we'll just have to wait for you to tell it, or for me to find it out..."
"Why am I here? That's easy, Ryug.." Light was interrupted again by the professor.
"Thank you Mr.Ryuga, we hope you have fun. However, I would appreciate if you sat properly and put your shoes on like a perfect score student would." Startled voices were heard across the room. "The next student to introduce themselves will be the well-dressed student next to you. What a great idea of yours for asking him."
"Of course, thank you Ryuga, I'll make sure you get pleased to hear some of my goals and reasons to be here."
Light stood up, so everybody could hear what he said and he could show some of his great confidence, specially to Ryuga now that it seemed as if he wanted to intimidate Light with all his questioning.
"Greetings, my name is Light Yagami. I enrolled because I want to become a detective one day. My father has really inspired me since I was a child, I consider him to have a great sense of justice, he always does what he considers the right thing to do, even if it means taking a lot of risk. I truly admire that part of him, and thus, I want to be like him too."
Once he finished, he thought to himself. "And what I consider the right thing to do, even with all that implies, is to use the Death Note to make a better place, a better world, and become the god of the New World, but you won't hear that, Ryuga".
Light then took his seat again, hoping he would enthrall some students, his professor or maybe all of them. But above all, he wanted to show Ryuga he wasn't going to hide anything, that he wasn't afraid of him knowing about his personal beliefs or information.
The professor had a look of aproval and hope towards Light while adressing him. "So captivating Mr. Yagami, the other perfect score student this year, thank you."
More bewildered voices were heard. Now the other students knew the two so called Mr. To-Oh's where in their class. "Alright, silence, next student please." Said the professor.
As the students kept presenting themselves, Light went back to his conversation with Ryuga, ignoring the rest and proceeded lowering his voice.
"Well, I hope I answered some of your questions Ryuga. Though, I want to make one too, it just seems right for me to ask something now that you've made the effort to get to know me better, that's what people do. So here's my question:"
"I guess I already know the answer anyway, in fact, I'm starting to know beyond it."
"Do you want to become a detective too? I mean, you don't really seem the kind of person who would enroll to college just for fun." Light gave Ryuga a little fake smile, one that perhaps would seem friendly and genuine to people.
"Hmph, I know he isn't telling the truth. Even so, I don't waste anything by trying."
Everyone wanted to know more about the two top scoring students in the freshman class. Many pairs of eyes continued to watch the two of them long after their introductions had concluded. Whispered questions of how two such different people could both achieve the same scores hovered in the atmosphere, only fading when the Professor shot a sharp glance around the room.
L remained scrunched in his seat, body facing frontward, though he returned his attention to Light. Tipping his head towards his number one suspect, his wide eyes focusing on the details of Light’s expressions. He knew his smile was performative, nothing more than a pleasantry used to soften the true intention of his question.
You’ve taken quite the interest in my education, haven’t you Light Yagami? It’s obvious you don’t trust why I’m here. It’s understandable. You doubt the authenticity of my alias being my true name. If you are, in fact, Kira, there must be a part of you that realizes I have discovered that you need a name and a face to kill.
One thing’s for certain. You’re suspicious of me, but now is not the time for you to learn that I am L.
“It’s an interesting question Yagami-san. Many come to college to expand their knowledge, to gain valuable skills for a career they seek to pursue.” L skated around the question.
“Although the concept of becoming a detective is quite intriguing. I imagine one would spend most of their time looking into people with questionable morals, finding out their secrets and misdeeds until they make a mistake, one small misstep that brings them to justice. Like with Kira, all he needs to do is slip up once, one tiny error that will bring him down.”
“What do you think that could be Light? If you were investigating Kira, what would you be looking for? How do you think he kills?”
L couldn’t continue his barrage of questions before the Professor began the lecture.
“Perhaps we could go to the commissary after class. I hear they have cake today.”
