“Toward New Masculinities” from Beyond Machismo: Aida Hurtado and Mrinal Sinha

This passage speaks about machismo and hegemonic masculinity in a Hispanic culture. Hispanic families tend to show their children to serve the men first, that men should just sit and watch tv, and no absolutely nothing in the household. While the mother is doing all of the house work. They believe that men are the only ones that could bring money into the household and they can live.

Masculinities among African American men: An Intersectional Perspective”: Baron K. Rogers, Heather A. Sperry, and Ronald F. Levant

In this story, it explains how African Americans go through the idea of intersectionality. Where this idea of being masculine is mostly seen on white males. Meanwhile African American men are seen as men but under a low ranking being of their race. People seem to follow this stereotype of not approving of these men inside of the “norms” to be like everyone else. It seems unfair how these men can’t seem to prove themselves of their masculinity because of their background and ethnicity.

“Welcome to the Men’s Club: Homosociality and the Maintenance of Hegemonic Masculinity”: by Sharon R Bird

She expresses this idea of homosociality. What that means is that two people of the same gender have a non-sexual relationship. Men often practice homosocial interactions when they have gathering with only men. That is where they practice their masculinity. These men seem to have the need to show off each other’s masculinity whether it’s in a sport or work or anywhere. They seem to feel the need to show that they are superior while women only get together to do the “feminine” things. It takes homosociality to keep the hegemonic masculinity alive because they need to show themselves off and show their superiority to be masculine.

“The Act like a man box”

This basically explains how men are often put into this box where they are only allowed to be in “the box”. If they attempt tt get out, someone automatically tries to put them back in. It explains how men often get criticized for how they act or how they dress and not being “manly enough”. These men have to act as if they can’t show emotion and that they can only be seen as these powerful/ strong. Men attempt to prove themselves that they are men in any way or kind. They seem the necessity to make sure that someone is aware that they are a man and that they are strong. I feel like men honestly shouldn’t have to do things to prove who they are and what a man is suppose to be. It’s create this stereotype that we shouldn’t have of how a person should look like.

“Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex”

The reading explains how people can’t really defend black women because they try to treat them as a whole. It is difficult because not every woman goes through the same sitaution. Every black women specifically may or may not be discriminated for their skin color or culture. People tend to characterize them as one specific thing and they don’t realize that everyone has a story. Not all of these individuals will believe in only one thing and no one has the same mentality.

The Bridge Called My Back

It explains the idea of women attempting to be apart of this “third world”. Where women are considered different as human beings. Race and ethnicity play another role to convert us into smaller groups because of our characteristics. It explains how lesbians in a Latino community are often seen as and the idea of this third world taking in effect and how it is preceived and how chicanas try to do something of this sitauation and then not taken seriously.

The Medical Construction of Gender

Kessler explains how it's seen as abnormal and odd to see a child that is intersexed. Society doesn't seem to know how to categorize them, either female or male. In the patriarchorical system they don't really have a place to stand and they become neither because they do have both a genetalia and a penis. Society tends to force them to become apart of the system. When babies are still in the womb, they already tend to look for signs to see whether it is a girl or boy. Sometimes people actually carry myths depending on what sex the baby might based on the size of the pregnant woman. Boys tend to be in a larger stomach.

I really enjoyed reading this becuase it is very relatable to what happens everyday. When we look at a baby the first thing that comes to mind if it is a boy or girl. It's something that we were raised to believe that there were certain characteristics of what we had to look look like to be apart of that social group. We also grow into this idea of male dominance where a man has to be served food first, or men have to work while women have to stay at home to take care of the kids. It's funny how older generations teach you this idea of not becoming any better than that because their are so many words that were used to show women empowerment such as"witch, bitch, and virgin". These phrases were used as something positive and over the years have become insults and makes a woman feel less of what they are. I really don't blame men because men also don't like to see themselves as weaker or shall I say less masculine. It's just the way that we were trained to be and society trying to bring us into the "norm" of life.

I love how Jennifer Lober describes the female and male. How we automatically believe in a certain standard of life. I related to when she wrote about a person trying to characterize the baby whether if it was a girl or a boy. We are taught to do certain things according to what people have told us when we were younger, what society would expect from that sex, or social class. We all seem to judge each other until we have an exact answer of what or who we classify ourselves as.

"Girl" by J. Kincaid

This story really reflects on having certain rules and expectations a woman has to live up to. It seems as it doesn't mater if she follows these rules and orders. It exaggerated the idea of looking like a slut or people immediately realizing that you will be characterized as one if you don't do everything. This person is telling this girl or woman how she needs to be act to not be labeled as a slut.
