Crisis Group: Bolivia at risk of renewed violence
The International Crisis Group released a new report analyzing the need for leaders to work with Bolivian President Evo Morales, to implement the necessary internal reforms. "The new Constitution of Bolivia: Avoid violent confrontation" was released in late August and is available to download or view an Adobe Acrobat format on the website of the International Crisis Group. Under the new analysis report, Bolivia is in danger of undergoing a new round of potentially violent clashes if the political leaders, including Bolivian President Morales does not work towards achieving a national agreement on reforms policies. The report says the Bolivian Constituent Assembly became the focal point of a divided country at serious risk of renewed internal conflict. Mark Schneider, vice president and special adviser on Latin America for the Crisis Group said in a news release, "If Morales does not lead the new dialogue in a way that defuses tensions and reached a consensus he risk of further violence and ultimately the failure of his project almost revolutionary change. "The Crisis Group report finds that President Morales must make an effort to address a wide range of population divided Bolivia, expanding the membership of committees of citizens and facilitate free and open elections. Meanwhile, the Crisis Group said, political parties opposed to Morales must be prepared to discuss with the president and his MAS party. Markus Schultze-Kraft, Latin America Program Director for the International Crisis Group, said: "The gap between rural and urban areas and the east-west geographic divide has been deepening. If violent confrontation is to avoid all political actors must remember that the election of Morales was a vote for change and make efforts to find a consensus on the nature, limits, and timing of these changes. "Additional information on this new Crisis Group report can be obtained by contacting Nadim Hasbani in Brussels at 32 (0) 2 541 1635 or Kimberly Abbott in Washington, DC at (202) 785-1601. In addition to the full report, summary and detailed list of recommendations of the Crisis Group is available on the website of the International Crisis Group. The International Crisis Group is an independent, nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that works to resolve and prevent violent conflicts around the world.
