Benjamin Marra's 'Blades and Lazers' number 2
Dude this is the most ultimate sci fi fantasy comic ever. Benjamin Marra is like a strange mix of Spain, a Molly Hatchet album cover, and a 14 year old playing the Dungeons and Dragons ‘Spelljammer’ expansion pack in 1992. For those of you who don’t know what ‘Spelljammer’ was, it was an expansion of D&D where you could campaign in space, be a seafarer in space to be exact. There was no technology, this wasn’t sci fi, it all operated under principals of majick and that everything had its own personal gravity. Personal gravity, you ask?
Personal gravity. Basically, to play ‘Spelljammer’ you had to have a ship, as in an old school seafaring ship outfitted with majick and some fantasy shit to make it fly in space. and you were fine in space because in ‘Spelljammer’ the idea is that everything, even something as small as a body, had enough gravity to hold atmosphere. So once you got the ship into space it would carry a bubble of oxygenated air around itself, enough to last a week or so or even more if the ship was really big and thereby had stronger gravity. To refill the ships atmosphere all you had to do was dip into the atmosphere of a planet and voila, good to go.
There was more to it that I don’t remember so well. I think outerspace was divided into areas called ‘Wildspace’ and ‘Aether’. Solar systems were encased in crystal spheres that bobbed along in the Aether. Your ship had to be outfitted for those two environments. All sorts of space versions of D&D monsters hung out in outer space, like the Beholder, which would hang out in asteroid fields or other strange races of aliens that lived on comets.
'Blades and Lazers' is such a fucking good book and Benjamin Marra is a master of badassdom, I want to roll a D20 with him
