Hemrich Brewing Co., Seattle, May 10, 1935
Seattleâs brewing industry has a long history, and the name Hemrich is associated with its 19th-century roots. Alvin Hemrich, along with his brother Elmer, is pictured in an 1894 photograph of the brewery workerâs annual picnic. Prohibition resulted in a hiatus for the breweries, but its eventual repeal brought about renewed business activity. In 1935, the Hemrich Brewing Co. was located at 5225 East Marginal Way.

Aerial of Seattle Yacht Club and Montlake Neighborhood from Northwest, Seattle, 1940
The Seattle Yacht Club had its first home in West Seattle. After the Lake Washington Ship Canal opened in 1919, the club built new facilities on Portage Bay in Montlake. This gave members a sheltered place to keep their boats and access to both Lake Washington and Puget Sound. The fresh water of Portage Bay also kept destructive barnacles from growing on the boatsâ hulls.

The expedition ended when the plane crashed outside Point Barrow, Alaska on August 15, killing both men.
