66. "How about we put the gun down and let's talk about this!" Becker/Jess
(This deviated loads slightly from the prompt, but I started writing and just let the story do whatever it wanted, so enjoy creepy Ethan, protective Emily, lots of little angsty bits and also maybe, kind of, sort of, implied character death?? But I mean maybe you’ll have to wait and see? Maybe it’ll all turn out fine in the end? [It’s Jess and Becker for Christs sake. It’s impossible for it NOT to turn out fine in the end] But anyway, enjoy!) (Also I know Connor’s eyes are brown!)
The fact that it was an EMD didn’t make a lick of difference in her opinion. The fact it was being waved in her direction while the owner gestured over-enthusiastically, made a whole lot of difference. The fact that Emily was standing opposite her, hands neatly tied behind her back, didn’t make a difference either. The fact that Emily was furiously trying to bargain her life for Jess’s, was really starting to get on her nerves.“How about we put the gun down and let’s talk about this!” Jess’s voice was shaking slightly, and Ethan turned to her, smiling. “How about you stay out of my conversation with my dear friend Emily eh?”He took a step towards Jess and lifted her head up so she was looking at him.“You’re a pretty one, aren’t you?” He purred, and Jess whimpered.Across the room, Emily began to hurl abuse at Ethan. “You so much as lay a finger on her again and I’ll tear your eyes out of their sockets!”Ethan chuckled, a deep musical sound, as hypnotic as it was disconcerting. “Is that so? Now what would Charlotte say if she could hear you speaking like that? I’m sure she wouldn’t be very happy.”“What Charlotte would do is none of my concern anymore Ethan, and I know you loved her, I do. But none of that is Jess’s fault so please let her go!”
Ethan pulled back closer to Jess and she instinctively bowed her head in fear, whimpering when she felt the cold barrel of the EMD pressing hard against the nape of her neck.Emily began to swear, the words modern and vulgar, and Jess almost laughed to hear them falling from her melodic and refined accent into the dusty air.Ethan removed the gun from her neck and held it up to the light as if examining it. “What an efficient little toy,” he mused and then turned his focus to Jess. “I assume these have the power to kill?”Jess nodded. “Y-Yes, if set to the correct voltage.”“I see.” Ethan thumbed the switch on the side, running it backwards and forwards along the track. He stepped into the centre of the room, and shifted in around in his hand. “In that case….This’s for Charlotte.” At those words, Emily closed her eyes, but stayed standing up straight, not wanting to give Ethan the privilege of seeing her cower. There was the sound of the gun charging, and she tensed instinctively, waiting for the blow to hit her.The EMD went off with the sound of a fire-cracker exploding, and the smell of popping electricity filled the air.It took a few longs seconds for Emily to register that she hadn’t been hit, and a few seconds longer for her to realise that the sharp intake of breath she had heard had not been her own.But it took less than a second for her eyes to fly open and fall upon Jess, lying face-down on the cold ground, her wrists still bound behind her back, prone and inert. The breath caught in Emily’s throat, and she barely registered Ethan leave the room.
The next few seconds ran by a haze of adrenaline, but suddenly her bonds were cut and she was kneeling next to Jess, stiletto knife in her right hand, her earpiece in another.“Matt?”There was a few seconds of jarring feedback, before Matt’s voice cut through, warped and fragmented by static. “E-Emily?”“Yes, it is me.”“We have your position from the black box and we’re on our way, but we’ve been unable to track Jess’s location. Is she with you?”Emily threaded her fingers through Jess’s and spoke breathlessly. “Yes, she is here. But Ethan had an EMD and…”There was the sound of Becker swearing loudly and a squeal of brakes, followed by a loud yelp of surprise from Connor.Matt’s voice was quiet and tinged with worry. “Is she okay?”Emily bit her lip. “I think she- I don’t know Matt! I don’t know! She’s unconscious right now. He had the EMD turned to the highest setting. I don’t know!” Her voice cracked, and Matt could tell she was close to tears.“Hey, hey. It’s okay. We’re nearly there, alright? We’re almost there. You’re doing a really good job Em, alright? Good girl.”
Normally, she’d have argued with him for being so condescending towards her, but right now she really didn’t have the energy. The feedback started up again as Matt severed the connection between her earpiece and theirs, and Emily tossed the small device aside, carefully cutting the rope that bound Jess’s wrists together and pulling the field-coordinators head into her lap, running her fingers through the girls hair, even if the action was more to calm herself than anything else. She sat like that for a few minutes, in the centre of the room, her head bowed low over Jess’s so her curly brown hair danced across the others face. Her wide brown eyes filled with tears as she took a deep breath, and letting her eyelids close only forced the tears out from underneath them. She lifted her hand to wipe them away and then sighed.
“Please wake up Jess. Please. If not for me, for Becker. God knows I don’t want to be left alone in the office with him if you die.” She laughed shakily, and twisted her fingers into Jess’s, squeezing tightly.“I’ve got a secret for you. Becker loves you. Isn’t that sweet? I know you love him too. I’ve seen the way you look at him when you think no-ones watching. I’ve seen the way you giggle when he buys you chocolate, or you blush when he puts his hand on your waist. And I’ve seen the way he watches you, the way he smiles when he hears your voice every morning, the way his eyes light up when you place your hand on his arm. I’ve seen it all Jess. He loves you, and you love him, and I think that’s a pretty good reason to wake up right now, don’t you?”The room stayed silent, and Emily’s voice cracked. “Come on Jess. Please wake up? Please? I’ve lost too many friends to Ethan, I don’t want you to be another. After Charlotte died, I promised her I’d look after Ethan, and that I’d also protect the next girl I came across that needed protecting. I’ve already failed my first promise. I don’t want to fail my second one too. So open those big blue eyes for me huh? Give me that shy little smile that I adore. Come on Jess. P-Please?”She bent forwards, resting her forehead against Jess’s, tears leaking from the corner of her eyes.
The door behind her was flung open, and the first person by her side was Matt, who carefully pulled Emily away from Jess into the corner of the room, holding her against him while the Victorian sobbed quietly into his shoulder.Connor and Abby stood in the doorway, their hands intertwined and their 4 green eyes trained on the floor in front of them.Becker was knelt in the centre of the room, his head bowed, and his breath coming in short laboured bursts, as though he’d just run a marathon. He let out an almost animalistic whine of despair and sagged. But no tears fell. His whole world was crumbling to pieces around him,and all he felt was numb.
Because this wasn’t happening.Because this couldn’t be happening.Because all of his senses were lying to him.Because there was no way Jessica Parker was dying at his feet, here, right now.Becker stood up carefully, Jess’s head lolling against his shoulder, her small body curled up against his chest, her curtain of red hair obscuring the pale of her face.“Come on.” He said, voice cracking. “We’re getting her out of here.”
(I hope you enjoy whatever the heck this was. What are endings? How does one write angst? I do not know. Have this ridiculously angsty confusing mess and enjoy.)(Does this count as Jecker? I am no longer sure.)And thanks to @panicuntildawn for reading/checking this for me before I posted it!)
EDIT - Re-reading this the next day, you can totally tell I wrote the ending at midnight while half-sleep deprived, but goddamn it, it took me hours so I’m keeping it. It’s possibly the worst thing I’ve ever wrote, and if you want a slightly happier version, I’m sure I could create one if somebody finds a prompt for it that sounds good!
When you read the last part rapidly, without blinking.
What now Becker..? What now?
Jecker + “Hear my heartbeat? Just focus on that.”
The phone call had been brief, the texts even shorter and more rushed, riddled with spelling and grammatical mistakes, but Becker had understood the basic gist. Predators in the ARC - A.K.A. Bad news. And not just for Jess. And to top it off, the ARC-issue 4x4 was blown to smithereens half-buried in a sand mound that now ceased to exist. All in all, it had been a top-notch day.But the car was the least of Becker’s worries. He was trying to work out the quickest way of getting to the ARC on foot and Matt had to talk him out of the idea to climb up The Shard.
Instead, they’d opted for awkwardly sprinting around London, dodging sporadically parked cars and trying to convince Connor that he didn’t need ice-cream right this second and yes they’d come and get some later if he was a good boy. They made it to the ARC in 12 minutes and 45.78 seconds - not that Becker had been counting or anything. And Matt had had to grab him by the shoulders and hold a finger to his lips before the captain had run in all guns blazing and thus alerting every predator in the whole of the ARC that an entire buffet of new snacks had arrived.
They’d moved slowly, compacted together since Matt had told them that it made them more difficult to pick off one by one, and if a predator did lunge they were all to just scatter, flinging themselves as far away from where they’d been standing as they could.Becker advanced first, Matt right over his shoulder.Connor had been shoved into the centre and was blocked off by Abby and Emily. They’d effectively noted that he was the one most likely to get himself killed, and thus had built a human barrier around him.He was grateful but also slightly insulted.
They split up when they reached the elevator, Becker opting to head into the hub.The doors were thankfully already open, so he could just step over the threshold, and his breath almost caught in his throat. There was one predator, and it was circling the ADD as though it was hunting it, its claws dragging across the control panels. It nudged the chair slightly, it’s bulbous head cocked to the side, as it salivated all over the floor. It chittered and clicked, and as it stepped past, Becker noticed Jess huddled up in the space under the desk, her knees drawn to her chest, her eyes closed as she rocked herself backwards and forwards, visibly tensing each time she sensed it coming closer.
He stepped further into the room, his shoes squeaking on the floor. The predator snapped around, and bounded across the room towards him in a few leaps, claws extended and head twitching. He lifted his gun and ducked, the creature sailing over his head and crunching into the wall.“Oi!” Becker yelled, and it turned back towards him, shaking its head like a glitching robot. He raised his gun and fired at the predator several times, the grey mass of limbs getting blasted into the wall and folding over, the quiet clattering of its teeth fading away.
He resisted the urge to spit at it, and then strode across the room and crouched down awkwardly next to the gap under the desk, one arm on Jess’s chair to support himself.“Jess? You wanna come out now?”It took her a moment, but then she shook her head.“It’s dead Jess. It can’t hurt you anymore, I promise.”She shook her head again, but more forcefully, and Becker sighed.“Don’t make me come under there.” He jokingly warned, but after a second he sighed. “Oh okay, fine. But you can’t tell Matt.”He sat down and scooted under the desk, then sat up.“Ow! There’s no bloody room under here Jess. I barely fit… Oh alright.”He pulled her against him, and she burrowed into his body, burying her head in his chest.
She was shivering, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes, and he wrapped his arm around her, holding her against him, rocking slowly on the balls of his feet.“Shhh.” He whispered, “Shhh. I’m here now. And nothing’s going to hurt you. Not while I’m here, okay?”She nodded into his chest, her face hidden behind a curtain of long auburn hair.“Good girl. Shh…Hear my heartbeat? Just focus on that.. Don’t think about anything else, alright? Don’t think about those things, don’t think about anything. Just listen.”He rocked them both quietly, humming softly.
Matt stepped over the threshold, the others at his heels and glanced around, noticing the dead predator.Becker motioned them over, holding a finger to his lips around then pointing as Jess.Matt nodded, and carefully lifted the field coordinator off him.Emily took Jess’s hand and pulled the younger girl into a hug.“You’re supposed to stay out of trouble Jessica. We have enough worry looking after Connor without you getting hurt as well.” She chided softly, though her voice was tinged with worry.Jess giggled softly and then pulled back towards Becker, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. The solider took a step back in shock, then hugged her back, smiling slightly.“Thanks Becker,” She mumbled, and he smiled, however nervous and perhaps relieved the motion may have been.“Don’t worry about it. That’s what I’m here for.”
Imagine the old team going through an anomaly to the future and Becker observing his future self with a certain someone... ❤ #loveisintheair
Dear whoever wrote the Captain Becker info on the Primeval wiki page,
You wrote that it was “uncertain” whether or not Becker had romantic feelings for Jess.
