Some helpful tips to save lives through first aid training
It's important that everyone knows the basics of First Aid techniques. Would you know what to do if you saw someone choking? If you saw someone unconscious, would you be able to administer CPR? How would you react in an emergency situation? Most of us have never been in the situation where we've needed to use first aid training techniques, but you never know when you might need to step in to help save someone's life. You may need to use them at work, at home, whilst traveling or out shopping. Knowing the correct procedures can make the difference to a person's recovery and you could even save their life.
Attending an accredited first aid course is a good place to start and there are first aid training centers all over the country. By completing the course you will learn the skills and confidence to know what to do if an accident happens. It can take only a matter of hours to learn how to save a life. You can learn on your own, with friends or with your family. If you have children, it's a good idea to also learn first aid techniques for babies and children.
The first step is to determine your priorities. In any life threatening situation, it is important to call the emergency services as soon as possible. If the casualty is unconscious, open and maintain their airway. Remove any obstructions from their mouth, in particular check that their tongue has not fallen to the back of their mouth as this will restrict breathing. If the casualty is breathing, place them into the recovery position, which will ensure that their airway will remain free of obstructions. If the casualty has stopped breathing, you can help by performing a combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths. When you exhale, you breathe out enough oxygen to potentially keep the casualty alive until the emergency services arrive. The chest compressions help the heart pump the oxygen around the body.
It is also important to check for signs of bleeding and open wounds. Most bleeding can be temporarily controlled by applying direct pressure to the area. If the casualty is injured from a fall or you think there may be some trauma to the head, remember to keep the person still and do not allow their head to rotate - this one step may save their life.
These are just a few basic tips to help you in a life threatening situation. A first aid course will cover these procedures, plus many more to give you an in-depth knowledge of first aid, which will supply you with the knowledge and confidence to potentially save someone's life.
