“Mr. Eric’s Cannabis Street”

The concept I wanted to explore was bringing part of one’s private life into the public. What better way than this? The format is meant to parody both Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street. The juxtaposition tickled me.

As humans, we are used to certain forms of expression. Expression that separates the medium from the artist is comfortable and acceptable for most. Expression that subverts the body, that subverts the social norms of interaction between one person to another, will always make things uncomfortable. It is a critique of ourselves at an extremely personal level. Performance art takes the inner ideas of a person and manifests them outwards in strange and unnatural ways, challenging ways. It challenges evolutionary tendencies in and of themselves, since as primates, our style of interactions are based off millennia of our species. Thus, I posit that performance art requires the artist to separate their natural behaviors and thought process through the deliberate choice of expression, or through unconscious mental abnormality.

Actual Artist Statement #3

Now that I've vented about Tumblr, here is my actual statement.

The series is called "Revisiting 2.0". I went through old art and design pieces I've done for the past couple years and used an animating tool called Plotagraph to give them movement and revitalized meaning. What I discovered along the way are the themes that I gravitate to, and the natural motion and repetition that my pieces already had. Themes of loneliness, continuing journies, celebrating beauty, feeling lost... These are all things not noticeable to me as they happen, but when grouped into a new art series become very apparent.

I chose to use looping video for the project because gifs on Tumblr are far too restrictive. Plotagraph allowed me to generate high-definition, 60 frames per second looping animation. It was just too crisp and smooth to compress down to a 320x240 15-frame artifact of computer history. With gifs being older than the mainstream internet, we need to move on.

While not necessarily a series, I hope each piece resonates with people. It's a glimpse into my personal work and I hope that you feel a sense of emotional connection as much as I was putting in. Cheers 😊

Why I hate the Tumblr platform

Before I took 4D, I avoided Tumblr like the plague. The way that comment trees work is one of the most convoluted methods I've ever seen. The upload limit on both gifs and videos is appalling, especially when competitive services have no such limits. Not only the limit, but then the compression algorithms on everything posted make it look like garbage. The rest of the internet makes fun of "Tumblr gifs" specifically for their low quality. The dashboard is also an extremely inefficient way to display media. If several friends reblog the same long post, I'm forced to scroll through the same junk I don't want to see three or four times. The suggestions for content I should like ranges from middle-school tier comics to topics that are entirely off the mark for me. In the end, I seek to continue my avoidance of Tumblr after this course and use much better services for artists and designers that don't convey the old LiveJournal aesthetic.
