Check out these magazine covers! No idea who the artists were but these look pretty sick
the trouble with romantasy being the hot trend in publishing rn is that most of the ppl cashing in are romance writers dipping their toes into fantasy rather than fantasy writers dipping their toes into romance and if you're not aware, romance readers are so infamously voracious that romance writers are expected to pump out 3-4 books a year just to keep them satiated and a writing and editing process on that kind of timeline is not necessarily condusive to well thought out worldbuilding and intricately crafted layered plotlines. which are, ya know, the things that people like about the fantasy genre
🐄 Revue horticole.. Paris: Librairie agricole de la maison rustique, 1829-1974.. Original source Image description: Illustration of a Cattleya Dowiana orchid with a large, ruffled central petal in deep red and orange tones, surrounded by pale yellow petals with slightly frilled edges, accompanied by two elongated green leaves. A smaller, detailed black-and-white sketch of the entire orchid plant shows the stem, flowers, and leaves from a side view. The artwork is from the “Revue Horticole,” combining botanical accuracy with artistic style typical of 19th-century horticultural publications.

Marshall Islands. Photo by Robert Moore.
“Islanders navigated by the stars, bird flights, and a stick chart like that studied by two Marshallese. Tiny shells represent islands, bent withes show direction of swells caused by prevailing winds. Waves, deflected by the islands, sometimes produce a confused sea, helping the primitive navigator sense his position.”

Banana Leaf, 1956.
“The photographs reproduced in this volume reveal strikingly the harmonious shapes and formations created by nature in crystal, stone, plants, animals, in earth, water, con- stellations, nebulae, clouds. We see the structural pattern in bone tissue and in the cross-section of the spine of a sea urchin; the design in the stripes and spots of animal fur, in the plumage of birds, in the endless variety of shells, in the skeletons of coral, and even in the feeding patterns of bugs and caterpillars. These photographs bring to light the surprising likeness between the designs we find in nature and the patterns created in human art, particularly in modern abstract and geometric design.”

Hawaii, 1910.
“Idyls of Hawaii is a rare Hawaiian photographic view-book ca. 1910-1920, showing the natural beauty of the islands. Featuring landscape, marine, sunset and several views of natives with outrigger canoes, it is illustrated by American photographer Alfred Richard Gurrey Jr.
Interest in A.R. Gurrey Jr. has come in the last decade mostly with his being acknowledged as the father of modern surfing photography. This has come on the heels of the discovery of several different editions of his hand-made volume "The Surf Riders of Hawaii”, believed to have been first published in 1914.“
