I have to go. I have to go eat dinner.
On June the 14th the constitutional court in Belgium stated that prohibition of wearing religious signs in an establishment of higher education does not constitute a violation of freedom of religion nor a violation of the right to human dignity which includes the right to education. This declaration meant that Hijab-wearing women don’t have the right to get higher education. Some will, unfortunately, give up on their dreams and some will be forced to remove the hijab to get an education. “I was in a school establishment where wearing a hijab was forbidden. Therefore, every morning, when I go to school, I had to take it off and put it in my bag. I had the feeling that I was enduring microaggressions from a system that was supposed to protect me”. #HijabisFightBack was a way to protest this discrimination. ✊🏽 The right to education should not be negotiable. (source)
A gentle reminder to all that the first university the world ever saw was founded by a Muslim woman. Today, we have to beg to be able to wear a hijab and get an education at the same time — both of which are fundamental rights that our women are being stripped of.
This is why stories like Yasmina’s and Moyo’s are important to see on Belgian television 👏
What would I do without your smart mouth? Drawing me in, and you kicking me out. You’ve got my head spinning, no kidding, I can’t pin you down. What’s going on in that beautiful mind. I’m on your magical mystery ride. And I’m so dizzy, don’t know what hit me, but I’ll be alright.
to the skam people who didn’t watch Season 2 of Blank (from NRK), what are you doing really? AND in case you didn’t know it has completely new stories/characters each season so if s1 doesn’t pull you in, you can skip to these two lovely people in S2. Zehra is both the softest and most bad ass and Petter is the cutest/sweetest/sexy musician who is sooo into her…
lovleg, blank, 17
After Skam finished, NRK greenlit several other shows in the real time clip format. Out of a desperation/desire for people to watch these really good shows (I have no problem deeming them all superior to Skam), I’ve written a post to signal boost.
lovleg follows 15-year old Gunnhild Kvam as she moves to Sandane from Høyanger for high school. Gunnhild moves to a shared house (the “White House”) with Sara, Peter and Alex in her floor, and Luna, Torstein and Ivar in the floor above hers. Lovleg means “lawful” in Norwegian, but in this specific case, it refers to turning 16, i.e. the age of consent in Norway, that makes sex between 16 year olds and anyone older than them legal.
I wouldn’t know how to explain what makes lovleg so special without spoiling major plot points. The characters live in rural Norway, so they’re connected to the world thanks to technology while their actual world is small. Gunnhild chooses to go to Sandane for high school to escape the bullying and social exclusion she experienced at Høyanger, and lovleg shows how Gunnhild does in a more accepting environment.
DO NOT watch this show without the social media content. You’ll simply miss out.
You can watch lovleg at @lovlegskada and @lovlegenglish.
[SPOILERS: lovleg contains an abortion storyline, a wlw storyline and portrayal of an anxiety disorder.]
blank is an anthology series and its mains have no connection with each other. This makes it a good show to watch if you’re only interested in one of the seasons. blank deals with the immediate period post-high school where people working out what to do with their lives.
Season 1 follows Ella Correia Midjo, who has moved to Oslo after high school with her obnoxious boyfriend Mats and her best friend Susanne. Ella neither studies nor works. Watch season 1 if you want to know what a post high school Eva Mohn season looks like. (Note: Ella is not a woc. She’s just half-Portuguese. 🤪)
Season 2 follows Zehra Demir, a second generation Turkish Muslim in Oslo who’s studying Pharmacy in uni. Zehra DJs on the side in the hopes of getting discovered. Her best friends are Amina, who’s engaged, and Nadiya, who’s a queen. Watch season 2 for a WOC led season. Zehra’s season is easily the best of all three blank seasons and a marked improvement over Sana’s season in Skam, as agreed by all 3 people who have watched it.
Season 3 follows Markus Berg, former Russ president and all around most popular guy in school, who moved to Oslo after high school and who moves back to his hometown Hadeland in the first clip. Markus’ high school crew have all moved to different places, so he only has his girlfriend Karoline and his former classmate Fredrik for company. Watch season 3 if you want to know what a Skam-style season about a straight cis abled white guy looks like.
You can watch blank at @nooraiskind.
Last but definitely not least, is 17. The reason I have listed it last is because there are no English subs for any season yet (only the first two episodes of season 1). 17 follows boys from Stovner in western Oslo, also known as the neighborhood where Muslims and immigrants of color have settled in.
17 changes its name every season, to reflect both the age of the main character and the number of episodes each season has. Every season counts down to an event in the finale episode.
17 (season 1) follows Somalian-Norwegian Abdi. 18 (season 2) follows Turkish-Norwegian Emrah. There’s a third season coming this fall called 16, but I haven’t been able to find the name of the lead.
You can watch 17 on the NRK website if you are Norwegian and speak Norwegian.
If you speak Norwegian and would like to help us translate and sub this show, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
May I drink the last bits? You can take it.
