Do you have any advice for someone who's good at creating a mental movie of a story, but has trouble with writing it out effectively?

I am so sorry I took forever to respond! (I increased my hours at work so my schedule and energy levels have been out of whack.)

Outlining. There are lots of different ways to outline but one way you could try is to write it out like a movie script. Then once you have the dialogue and action down, start filling in all the other parts of description, exposition, etc.

Summaries. Another way is to write out a summary of the scene you have visualized. It doesn’t even have to be complete sentences. You can just write down images or snippets or just start describing what you “see” and go into as much detail as needed. Don’t worry if it makes complete sense. The idea is to translate the visual feeling into words and that is not always a one to one ratio.

Storyboarding. If you are a visual person, then storyboarding and drawing out the scene might work best for you, as if you were making a movie.

And don’t worry if what you write is not the perfect movie you see in your head. It will take some time and editing to shape the words into how you image them. So don’t get discourage and keep at it!

Another thing to keep in mind is articulation. It’s easy to watch scenes play out like a movie because the very act of thinking allows multiple lines of thought to be experienced at the same time—we can be aware of precisely how characters are moving as they fight or interact or whatever they’re doing, what the environment looks like and what the characters are wearing, how they’re all feeling, what tones of voice they’re using, and so much more, all in the span of no more than a few moments.

But when you go to put this reel down onto paper, you can only convey one detail at a time rather than the full range a piece of art or movie or comic or any other visual medium allow. On top of that, trying to turn mental pictures into concrete words is hard, and it can lead to the feeling that writing is extremely difficult.

This is where articulating comes in. Purposing to think through this movie reel by using actual words and not just via visuals/sensations can help tremendously when it comes to bridging that—sometimes enormous—gap between daydream and written scene. Don’t necessarily think in broad word strokes, either—get nitty-gritty with the details. Think about how you’d describe what you’re seeing if you had your fingers on the keyboard or pen in hand. The more you can “write” away from the keyboard, the easier you’ll find describing what you imagine when it actually comes time to lay words down on the page.
