Dante and Vergil came back from hell and Nero fully expected to be avoided once again anyway. To his surprise, the first thing the men did was seek him out. Naturally, he doesn't really trust either of them. Vergil, because he doesn't even know him. Dante, because turns out he didn't know him either, not really, and that stings.
He expected them to give up right then and there. He certainly didn't expect to be pestered daily. He had tried getting Kyrie to open the door each and every time, it didn't stop them.
He needed excuses to get away from home, somewhere where they wouldn't immediately find him. So he found himself a nice, pretty girlfriend in hopes they could go out on dates as to avoid his family old boss and his brother.
The first few dates went great, but…It started getting worse afterwards. The girl seemed to be uncomfortable around him, and then she outright ditched him. Didn't even do it in person, just sent him an awkward text message.
It wasn't just her though. He's noticed that Fortunan people went back to their old ways of disliking him. Why? Everything had been going great, people started liking him, some of the older men even called him son! So why, why had it returned to the way it was back when he was still a kid? What did he do, where did he go wrong?
"Get away, demon."
"No one wants a murderer around."
"I pray for the songstress and children, Sparda can only hope you don't hurt them too."
Hurt them too? But he didn't hurt anyone, did he? He was trying so hard to be good!
He got banned from Fortuna. Not an unofficial one or anything, he legally put a single foot on Fortunan land. The reason? He was a murderer, apparently. His short term girlfriend had been found dead, and he was found guilty. Kyrie stared at him in disbelief, but she at least quietly let him know she doesn't believe them. But she couldn't do anything, she still had to take care of the children, who else, afterall?

So now Nero found himself on the Mainland again. Fortuna was a traumatising experience all in all, but he despised the outside world more. It was unfamiliar, afterall. That was the main reason he and Nico parted their paths, at least when it came to jobs. She still came over in Fortuna, but she spent most of her time outside of it.
Nero really wanted to call her, he needed a place to stay in the end, but it felt wrong. He couldn't ask that of her, right? He'd just find a cheap motel, take up any possible gig, do some maintenance for the owners maybe, and he should be fine, right?
He was blacklisted by every single broker.
Was that because he ditched his job as a demon hunter? (Just officially, he supposed. He still helped with demons, well, until Dante and Vergil came back. He scowled at the thought of them.)
Whatever, he could still find another job, he was great at a plenty of things.

He found one job. At a night club. He begrudgingly took it, much to his displeasure. He hated it, all the eyes on him, and a pair that seemed more cutting than the others, but he could never tell to whom it belonged.
His hate was short-lived however, because soon after they fired him anyway. How unlucky could one person get? Very much, apparently. He was running out of options, really. He sighed, getting ready to call Nico, finally.
"Whoa, hey, kid! Fancy seeing you here. Finally decided to leave that hole?" Shit. Fuck. "I know you don't really want to talk, honey, but could you please—"
Nero turned his back and started walking away.
"Hey—Kid, you look like you're freezing and starving. I'm not gonna let you walk away like that."
Just ignore him, he'll piss off at some point. He heard a sigh. There it was, his uncle old boss was giving up already.
"Oh, baby, are you scared because of what happened on Fortuna?"
