There's a post going around that purports to show tweets by Rachel Dolezal talking about "trans racialism," but seemingly nobody checked Twitter to see that the account in question was only created 23 hours ago (as of 6/13), so there's like a 99% chance it's satire. Do two minutes of investigation before you get outraged; I don't think that's a lot to ask.
The Bay Area rental market is ridiculous... I'm renting out two rooms in my apartment and I got 51 responses to my ad in the first 24 hours. So now I come home from my job making spreadsheets only to have to make another spreadsheet listing everyone's pros and cons so I can narrow this down. A friendly reminder that I can't move ever. Ugh.

Being poor is no excuse to willingly sign up to murder innocent people, regardless of what you -thought- the US military was about before signing up. And the “poor kid forced into enrolling in the military” is closer to a strawman figure than a reality:

Only 11 percent of enlisted recruits in 2007 came from the poorest one-fifth (quintile) of neighborhoods, while 25 percent came from the wealthiest quintile. And that’s coming from conservatives who think that is a good thing. The US military apparatus is about 70% white, active forces are more than 80% male, and overwhelmingly middle class ( http://foreignpolicy.com/2013/07/31/uncle-sam-wants-who/).
These aren’t poor kids being manipulated into joining an evil system but mostly people with other options who think the military is a cool machine to join.

Isn’t that another issue of the profit driven capitalist education system? This doesn’t help the case at all, they shouldn’t be joining the military to help enforce the lack of access to education for people, but fighting against the current system.
But in the limited education they are given before they join is filled with propaganda about how the system we have is the only system that works. You can’t villainize people for their ignorance.
Villainize them for murdering children for god’s sake! Villianize them for being the stormtroopers of amerikan imperialism, that has slaughtered countless millions! All that “get an education” bullshit is just a petit-bourgeois fantasy, that if you pass enough exams you can climb up the class hierarchy to a get a cozy management job. Even if you’re the most naive and impressionable sod on Earth, dreams of social mobility aren’t a justification for murder you dense motherfucker!
The bourgeoisie (AKA “the middle class”) had their revolution, and we’re living in it. And just as they did with kings and lords before, the “middle class” will get theirs in the upcoming proletarian revolution…
I was listening to a podcast the other day where this guy was talking about the difference between blame and responsibility (in that instance, regarding young white people and institutional racism): in this instance, I think it's correct to say that we can't blame American soldiers for their ignorance if that's all they were ever taught, and in many cases it is. As much as the tumblr left wants to just scream GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND, that isn't how ideology works: people will generally attach themselves to whatever are the dominant ideas of their society, unless they are introduced to ideas that present a coherent challenge (read: not "fuck you you imperialist piece of shit!!") to those dominant ideas. Most working class people of all racial groups buy into the "support the troops" trope precisely for this reason, even if these lower socio-economic brackets are less likely to enlist.
But gingerche's middle class annihilationism here is a little creepy and genocidal, especially in light of having denounced murder in literally the previous sentence.

Critique drift is the phenomenon in which a particular critical political lens that correctly identifies a problem gets generalized and used less and less specifically over time. This in turn blunts the force of the critique and ultimately fuels a backlash against it. Critique drift is a way that good political arguments go bad. […] Very obvious examples of critique drift include the term “mansplaining,” “tone policing,” and “gaslighting.” Each highlights real phenomena: men who explain things to women who know more than they do about the subject at hand; people using critiques of tone as a way to dismiss or avoid the substance of the argument; the tendency to try to make someone feel crazy as a way to win an argument. All of those are real. But the actual communicative, rhetorical, and analytical value of each has been severely undermined, in my view, by the way in which they are now applied to more and more situations, or to instances where the standards for meeting these simply haven’t been met. Political critique draws power from specificity, but the presumed social force of using certain terms inevitably leads to their watering down.

Anyway, honestly I really don’t understand what the Obama Administration was thinking… The declaration came out of nowhere and is just transparently false to anybody who knows anything about regional history. Obviously I will never underestimate the awfulness of the US government, but the move just… didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

Sure! In the US (I'm not sure if you are from here so I may be explaining something you already know) there are really only two political parties: Republican and Democrat. The Democrats are supposedly the "left-wing" party, but a) they are only left-wing in relation to the Republican Party and barely so, and b) the Republican Party is so far-right that the Democrats' idea of what is comparatively "left-wing" is sort of a joke. On most major policy questions they are nearly indistinguishable.So for people who are actually politically left-wing (i.e. those of us who broadly support things like economic democracy, respect for others, internationalism, fairness, empowering the neglected and downtrodden, etc., but who are constantly being asked to vote for Democrats in US elections, it makes you kind of feel like a San Franciscan commenting on how far away Manhattan is (3,000 miles), but then being told how not-far it is since "it's much closer to San Francisco than Queens (which is across a river from Manhattan)."If your political mentality is stuck thinking that Democrat-Republican is the alpha and omega of political thought, then the Democrats will look like the left-wing option, just like if you are stuck in a New York State of Mind (pun intended), Queens seems really far away from Manhattan. To an outside observer, or to a non-New Yorker, that sounds insane. To someone living in Istanbul, Queens and Manhattan are not even just close: they are the same thing. To someone who believes in real left-wing values, the Democrats and Republicans are both so far to my right that I can barely tell the difference.Hope that was a decent explanation; it probably wasn't. :-)

Also venetianality, I understand the poem to signify Andrés' stone as emblematic of resistance. Context: the poem was written one month before the Tercerista wing of the FSLN launched the October insurrection, which sort of marks the beginning of the end of the Somoza dictatorship, and the Frente was at the time small (100-200 members across the country), split (3 factions that were not communicating with each other) and demoralized (Carlos Fonseca was killed the year before, Borge was languishing in prison). I think Borge is saying that the resistance is still a weaponized object--the stone--not just some words we say to console ourselves about the past. And that this stone remained intact somewhere; the revolutionaries just needed to find out where it was (perhaps in the rebellious indigenous neighborhood of Monimbó, or in the forests of El Ocote) so that it could be thrown again at the forces of oppression. I hope that helps!

Oh! La Piedra. It's about a Nicaraguan soldier named Andrés Castro, who fought in the resistance to William Walker's "filibusteros" that occupied Nicaragua briefly in the 1850s. He's known for throwing a rock in the face of an American occupier at the Battle of San Jacinto.Check out the poem "Andrés" by Fernando Gordillo as well; Borge's poem is sort of a riff off of that one.
