When they first start spending the nights together, Dean automatically falls into the role of ‘big spoon’. He’s always slept more soundly with the warmth of another person tucked up beside him, and knowing that Cas is safe in the cocoon of his arms is comforting beyond belief. And for months, that’s okay. But Cas begins getting restless at night, pulling away out of his arms, sighing, sitting up and staring out the window , and Dean thinks that he must have done something wrong, has managed to convince himself that any day now Cas is going to tell him he’s leaving for good this time. So when they settle into bed one night in their customary positions and Cas turns to him with a sigh, Dean is sure this is Cas about to say goodbye, but Cas simply reaches out, and flips Dean over so he can curl up behind him, arms wrapped securely around Dean’s belly. 

“Cas?” Dean asks, stiffening even as Cas relaxes against him. “What are you doing?”

“I wanted to try it this way,” Cas grumbles into his neck. “You can be the little spoon too, you know.”

“Yeah, I know,” Dean tells him, smile creeping onto his face. “I just thought…”

“Some nights I want to hold you and some nights I want to be held,” Cas says firmly, burying his nose in the fabric of Dean’s t-shirt. “Tonight I want to hold you.”

Dean turns his head into the pillow to stifle a laugh. “Whatever you say babe,” he whispers, and leans back into Cas’s embrace. Within ten minutes, they’ve both fallen asleep.

“Respect to Nature.”

Humans adapting themselves to nature rather than forcing other species to adapt to us. This is what we must do in the Anthropocene. Trees are the most important three dimensional structures of many ecosystems, and they are the central design features of most permaculture gardens. They provide many products and services to other species, from housing to food (acorns, insects, pollen), shade and shelter from the wind. We ought to respect their importance.
