freshly clad in scarlet engineering clothing, jaylah cannot help the smile, nor the way her heart flutters in her chest as though joy is all she has ever known. she is starfleet now, assigned to the enterprise which docked only hours ago. she is more excited to see the crew than she can express aloud.
❝ spock? ❞ confusion and delight spark within those golden eyes, for she had not thought anyone would come to greet her, and it has been so long since they have seen each other. vid-calls are hardly the same thing. jaylah’s pace increases, and she holds her hand in the ta’al to greet him, a gesture practised many times for a moment such as this. ❝ i am so happy to see you! ❞
time passes on, change bounding ahead of it, but now they could return HOME, as the enterprise naturally had to be. the click of his boots had already rung along the sterile floors of the new ship’s passages. no joy lights his eyes, no smile reaches his lips, but he feels content for the first time in so long.
| yes. | a further greeting was poised on his tongue when she forms the ta’al for him, immediately prompting his return signal, &&. a deeper respect for her that would never be revealed. peace & long life accompany the gesture, before he presses on. | i am satisfied with our meeting again, as well. we are still awaiting further crew members, so i stayed to escort you to the enterprise, on captain kirk’s leave, of course. he is pleased with your joining our numbers permanently. |
subject: Cᴀᴘᴛᴀɪɴ Jᴀᴍᴇs T Kɪʀᴋ..
not for a moment would he dream of questioning his first officer this much in the line of duty. kirk is perfectly capable of taking spock at his word when it came to his areas of EXPERTISE, questioning him only when faced with conflicting information. it must seem arbitrary to question him now, to be so focused on the specific number of lizards they would be leaving with. kirk isn’t entirely certain himself why ten was too many. it was, perhaps, a perception of excess that, to the captain, seemed rather uncharacteristic of spock. ( perhaps he just didn’t understand the vulcan quite as well as he thought he had – were that the case then maybe further questioning really WAS required… ) “ you said even numbers would work best ?? I guess that leaves us with a few options – six, eight, or the originally proposed TEN… “ he sucks in a long breath, exhaling it slowly and chewing the inside of his cheek as he considers. after all, he’d grown up on a FARM, surrounded by animals, so caring for a considerable number was nothing new for the captain. the animals back home were livestock – markedly different from pets. most humans, at least, tended towards a more modest numbers of pets. maybe it was common for vulcans to care for more… “ y’know, spock, HUMANS typically get just one or two of these things. “
It was a REMARKABLY risky move for Kirk to mention Human custom in this debate --- IF Spock truly felt Human emotion clearly &&. harbored spite. But no such shade of anger was currently known to him, &&. the other’s ploy of what a Human would do was identified as an attempt to understand Spock’s position on the situation when related to the tradition he knew. It was meant to be advice to take under further consideration no doubt, a presentation of another view he had not been informed of beforehand. But even if Earth was the only HOME for him left, how was he supposed to discard Vulcan ideals &&. practices easily? How could he contribute to the further endangerment of the culture, by rejecting a practice over human ideals? A culture based on LOGIC, adaptable &&. sustainable when change called for it. Well, Spock had every aspect of it on his side here.
Yes, sir, that would be a correct statement . . .
A pause, waiting for Kirk to determine an offer. His stance naturally fell into a position At Ease. The lizards WOULD be living on CAPTAIN KIRK’S ship, after all, &&. Spock did take his opinion in the matter seriously, nothing short than orders. But his logic was falling too short for Spock’s Vulcan preferences, an argument seemingly based on little more than surprise &&. exasperation. He would simply have to rely on trusting Kirk’s judgement, as he was now more comfortable with doing.
I fail to see how that applies to me, sir. Nor am I ignorant of Human practices in the matter of animal domestication. I merely elected to discard such a custom while determining a logical quantity with which to commence my research.
subject: Cᴀᴘᴛᴀɪɴ Jᴀᴍᴇs T Kɪʀᴋ..
not for a moment does DOUBT cross his mind – if there’s a soul alive that could care for ten lizards, it was spock. his objections didn’t stem from a concern for the creatures’ wellbeing, but rather the ( wholly illogical ) notion that ten was just too many. he wasn’t one to deny his first officer a reasonable request, though, so certainly he was willing to accept a compromise. seven just seemed to be an arbitrary number to him. in addition to observation, questioning spock’s line of logic was sure to offer some insight into the vulcan’s thought process. ( all in the interest of better understanding and cohesion, of course. ) what he’s careful NOT to mention in all of this is the lizards’ uniqueness to the planet earth. the topic of ‘fauna of vulcan’ is one he’d prefer spock to bring up first. on official business, the commander’s heritage, former planet and current colony could simply be unavoidable, but in personal matters, kirk preferred to allow that particular subject to be broached on spock’s terms. whether the fascination with the lizards was a reminder of home or just an interest in the novel – or even something completely different – he’d avoid questioning THAT just yet. “ a line of reasoning purely for my benefit… well, never let it be said I’m not flexible. surely there muse be some number that satisfies both conditions ?? “
Continued questioning, even after his explaining how he had come to the proposal of seven. He ought to have considered himself lucky for his captain’s sensitivity, for the avoidance of mention of VULCAN, for his motives not actually being brought up, but this question of number was earning his argument instead. Spock was accustomed to logical proposals, to turning in reports of new things to be discovered complete with sound reasoning on why it should be carried out, but this was a personal interest. How was he to relate that the leopard gecko was quite close to a reptile found on his home planet? One that had roamed even the streets of Shi’Kahr &&. was now echoed in the spotted creature of Earth. That he hoped were mimicked in behavior by the lizards before him. No, this would be a definitive SCIENTIFIC CURIOSITY, chosen because they were readily sustainable in space, or because they themselves were fascinating, whatever Kirk fancied.
Continued questioning, though he could not figure out why his captain was so concerned with the pets he wanted. What difference could it make to him when Spock had already guaranteed the space &&. supplies they required? If it was a Human trait of some internal limit on animals kept, it eluded him. But then, much about Human culture &&. Kirk’s behavior often did. He would just have to keep answering.
I never suggested so, sir, you can be most adaptable when called for. I would suggest, however, that you decide upon a reasonable number of geckos to take home. I should wonder whether I would come up with the quantity most agreeable with you.
the night sky once ruled my IMAGINATION. now i turn the dials with CAREFUL CALCULATION. after a while, i thought i’d never find you. i convinced myself that i would never find you, when suddenly i saw you. at first i thought you were a constellation. i made a map of your stars, then i had a revelation: you’re as beautiful as endless, you’re the universe i’m helpless in. an astronomer at my best when i throw away the measurements. like a telescope, i will pull you so close 'til no space lies in between. i was a billion little pieces 'til you pulled me into focus. astronomy in reverse, it was me who was discovered.

❝ nightmares? thought y’said vulcans didn’t deal with human shit like that. ❞ his brow furrows in a mixture of concern and confusion, and he’s reaching for his tricorder almost before spock finishes speaking. now, if spock were human, mccoy thinks he’d have an inkling of what was wrong – – after all, the guy lost his mother, his home, and most of his race. but spock’s a vulcan, and they’re supposed to be goddamned superheroes when it comes to emotions and mental control and all that bullshit. he narrows his eyes in suspicion, giving the hobgoblin a very obvious once over. ❝ y’know, spock, y’aren’t lookin’ so hot. what – did y’get in a tussle with one of sulu’s plant creatures or somethin’? ❞ there’s real worry behind his words ( not that he’d ever admit it, dammit, but he’s never seen spock quite so off-kilter before ) and he endeavors to bury that fact by dropping his gaze back to the tricorder, which whizzes as it attempts to analyze spock’s vulcan physiology.
| That is correct, doctor. Vulcans do not typically experience nightmares, except in extraordinary circumstances, particularly mental diseases. But as I have not experienced any other symptoms I do not suspect that to be the cause. Which is why I had decided to consult you. | Spock pays no mind to the immediate use of the tricorder, McCoy’s discerning gaze, having expected to garnish his full attention ( though whether that was a good thing or not eluded him ;; he was an excellent doctor, truly, but his “bedside manner” left much to be desired, in Spock’s case ) | I see the decision was not a mistake ;; I was not aware that I appear any different than average. However, I fail to understand why I would desire to start a conflict with Mr. Sulu’s plants. Anyway, I had assumed the nightmares have simply been a psychological response to recent events, no doubt inherited from my mother for extenuating times. I suspected that you would concur. | McCoy’s comment on his not looking well catches him off guard, having hoped to conceal his insomnia.
gonna throw out a STARTER CALL now. no caps!

Doctor, I would like to consult you on my decreasing ability to sleep &&. unprecedented NIGHTMARES. Would you have any remedies available for either of these symptoms?
N E V E R had he planned to report to Sick Bay willingly for such an issue. It was the surfacing sign of DECAY in his Vulcan facade, meant to be accepted &&. suppressed so that it would no longer trouble him. But the sleepless nights could no longer be ignored ;; even the VULCAN physiology could not withstand such abuse for long. He could brush off the reason for his insomnia, shift the blame to his desire to attend to his work, supplement it with sleep medication once he had found his way to the doctor’s office. But it was HER. It. Them. Everything. Statistics alone could force him away from rest, if only it had stopped there. Closed leap of... he had no right to say LOGIC. What caused his GUILT, his lingering g r i e f, were not logical, &&. would therefore fail to be addressed. It had been a busy year. There is much work to be done still. A weary mind can shift away from the task of hand, particularly in sleep. Nothing else had to be said of it. What he subjected himself to in dreams would never be shared as far as he was concerned. The doctor would prescribe rightly &&. Spock would have no more to discuss, it was clear cut. If only he did not have to be questioned in the process.

Sir, now that we are off duty, I was wondering if you could explain something.
His ADVANCED knowledge of Earth’s history, the influences of his mother, could not be easily dismissed. For all of his chiding of Human ILLOGICALITY, the gradual understanding of the more personal traditions, he had maintained an active interest in the history &&. culture throughout his Academy days &&. continued to expand it even now. But some phenomena could not be explained satisfactorily by a TEXTBOOK, presenting itself outside of the academic context &&. eluding him with Human inconsistencies. He had been waiting to pose his question for Kirk, trusting his judgment &&. answers ABOVE ALL.
I was talking with Dr. McCoy earlier &&. heard him call me a . . . ““ POINTY EARED HOBGOBLIN ”” again. As I rarely witness him accusing me of being anything else, I was hoping you would explain to me his fixation on this one phrase. I also understand that the pointy ear trait has not always been regarded as NEGATIVE, especially within the more recent modern era with the advent of certain additions to Human culture &&. so on. Would it not be ILLOGICAL for Dr. McCoy to continue to use archaic ideas as a term of insult for my Vulcan physiology, even for Humans?

Captain, if you have a moment . . .
IT WAS A WELL DETAILED STUDY, records of data gathered at a DISTANCE, projections of what a curious crew might find if they only delayed their course briefly. Every detail was splayed across the tablet he kept in his hand, though he had come prepared to explain his findings in SIMPLER terminology. Scientific pursuit was justification enough to approach the ANOMALY he had identified months earlier, but identification was different from knowing its symptoms. Even with all the predictions, the numbers, he greatly lacked a complete explanation for it. There was no cause, no side effects lashing out at its immediate vicinity, not even speculation on what matter it consisted of. Official report identified it as a variant of ION STORM, && Starfleet Command had let it be left at that.
But it did not have to be THAT WAY for long, if only he could adequately win the captain’s attention, which would be more than possible with their STANDING ORDERS. His meticulously organized &&. slowly lengthening report could be closed at last, a confirmation of what he already was beginning to suspect, but could not yet PROVE. He had never been quite convinced of its identity.
There is an ANOMALY not far off of our course, no more than two days, that I would like to request we research further. No one in Starfleet has gotten this close before, &&. our records are incomplete. I have the existing report on it here, sir, if you wish to review it.
Cᴀᴘᴛᴀɪɴ Kɪʀᴋ:
there’s no fighting the smile that tugs at his lips, the light that twinkles behind his eyes. the fascination of his first officer never fails to warm his heart - even if he himself would much rather be lingering near the puppies. ( there’d been a particular yellow lab that reminded him of the one he’d had growing up in iowa. she’d elicited a bittersweet nostalgia, but one he’d like to revisit, nonetheless. ) he watches spock’s eyes with care, meticulously observing his body language. it’s a practice he’s grown accustomed to, an initial challenge to their working together, but one necessary for their cohesion. he likes to think he’s mastered it, picking up on the little subtleties that might go unnoticed by the untrained eye. through his study, it’s evident how taken spock is with the creatures, a fact that makes it difficult to tell him no. “ seven is… still a lot of lizards, spock. got any LOGICAL reason for that particular number? “
The ATTENTION spared him by Kirk does not fall on ignorance, he is well aware of his movements being watched, but it does fall on indifference. He neither dislikes nor likes his gazing at the lizards being monitored, finding some reason in it instead considering he had invited Kirk here solely for his OWN benefit. He had been subjected to such occurrences enough for Spock to theorize that Kirk assumed he was pleased with the lizards, though that could easily be denied &&. explained away by his SCIENTIFIC CURIOSITY of the small creatures. Such animals were not native to Vulcan, not in this particular brand, &&. to have the opportunity to study their behavior closely would prove most interesting. There was no reason for Kirk to assume beyond that.
What did surface, however, was the continued questioning of Spock’s decision in the number of geckos he was planning to obtain. Ten had been rejected immediately, but even this compromise only warranted further objection. Spock was more than capable of sustaining the lizards in health ;; he had shuffled through every report he could find on the beings &&. had already begun preparations for providing shelter to each one. Truly the captain had no merit in his being concerned over their welfare.
The logic of SEVEN is directly derivative of your objecting to my owning ten, sir. I would prefer not to take away half of what I had originally intended, so seven seemed to be a worthy compromise. Of course, the number is not logical when applied to the geckos in terms of husbandry, or even in their socializing. In that matter, even numbers would, logically, be more satisfactory to the geckos. But I shall take your limits under consideration, sir.

A PAUSE. The list of officers he had chosen was gripped in his hand, but he did not glance at it. Her complete profile, her achievements && skills HIGHLIGHTED as evidence. He had not been in her company often before, their paths having no PURPOSE in crossing for long, though it was clear now that she would do exemplary work on this mission, based on her accumulated records. Away missions could be costly, devastating to both the crew && any native inhabitants ;; he could only allow the Enterprise’s very best to accompany him. He would not deny, however, that her being partially Betazoid had been a factor in his decision. According to their scans, to the observers they had stationed on the target planet undercover, the inhabitants were not so unlike the Betazoids themselves. It was L O G I C A L to have an Empath accompany him.

Good day. I was wondering if you could help me with something, miss. My friends && I are trying to stop a very immoral person, but need some help in locating him. Would you be willing to act as a SPY? It would be for the greater good, of course.
COVERT OPERATIONS were meant to be appealing to Human youth, as Spock understood it. Perhaps this girl would even regard it as little more than a GAME, if he was lucky. But something was wrong in the upper chains of Starfleet command, && logical moves had to be their prerogative. The odd new orders && counter-orders issued by their admirals were nothing short of troubling, a deep sign of an overpowering influence or invasion or some other unfathomable dilemma. Only, considering it affected Starfleet in particular. . . How could any officers of Starfleet get close to the infected without becoming so themselves? It was a gamble, one they could not risk. Not when the crew he belonged to maintained the still-liberated Flagship, the very finest, the irreplaceable. Caution had to be the RULE.
He loathed to ask a child for such help ( both from a sense of morality && distrust of the efficiency of someone so young ) but she would be unquestioned with the right alibi, unaffected by the threats posed for everyone else. It would be a swift operation, requiring alone her visually identifying a particular admiral then reporting back, being relieved of duty. Statistically, the danger she faced was minimal.
