idk i just feel like people who are so confident there is zero value to LLMs are, ironically, being pretty incurious. i just saw a meme that featured a city skyline, wanted to know what city it was, reverse image search gave me nothing, so i ran it by claude and it instantly came back with toronto skyline, pointed out a very distinctive building in the image that I have no familiarity with. easy to double check, it was right, and now I have that tiny little fragment of curiosity satisfied! I wasn't ever going to put a a real concerted effort into figuring this out, it's not that important to me, but it's nice to be able to get my answer easily!

it feels basically identical to the earlier days of using google and wikipedia when people complained about how that was making everyone lazy cause they just looked things up instead of going to the library about it but actually it ruled to be able to have so many questions answered so easily. I am simply not going to the library to investigate every single fleeting curiosity that tickles my brain!

Hey! Local AI guy again. Do you have any recommendations for local, offline LLMs? I know this is a more demanding task, but I'm thinking of doing this as a project sort of like a tamagochi, so I honestly don't mind spending hours, months, years on it. I just need a jumping off point.

it definitely depends on how much you want the model to be able to do! big models with a lot of outside, current knowledge are going to be a lot larger, but if you just want something that can generate novel output and work as, well, a tamagotchi, those will be a lot easier to locally host! i would suggest shopping around on https://openrouter.ai/ for certain, as i unfortunately don't have a lot of experience with using local models myself (all of my attempts have unfortunately failed and claude's been working too well for me to reconsider)

ollama is a great resource if you're comfortable using the terminal. i've found popular models like qwen and llama are good for most basic tasks. unfortunately i'm not aware of a good frontend that isn't a pain in the ass to set up (oterm worked fine once i figured it out though). if you're willing to be patient you can run even large models on pretty much any hardware (i've been able to generate at what i consider reasonable speeds on a dual core cpu with no gpu). i will second what rhapsody said about local models not being as smart as bigger, more up to date online models, but for the most part they'll get the job done.
