Allan McCollum (American, b. 1944), Canto IV, 1972. Canvas squares, lacquer stain, varnish, silicone adhesive, caulking, 42 x 42 in.
A selection of abstract book cover designs by the Guild of Women-Binders from The bindings of to-morrow (1902).
In the introduction, G. Elliot Anstruther says of the Guild of Women-Binders: “Begun inauspiciously, in the face of discouraging criticism that was at times hardly to be distinguished from hostility, the work went steadily on, realizing its purpose by a consistent loyalty to its own ideal. In the result, criticism has become praise, and even the scoffers of a few years back are constrained to devotion.”
