“What do you want?” Her voice was monotone and sharp, not quite in the mood to deal with talking at the moment. Especially with someone who’d abandoned her and left her to step up to a position she never wanted. Especially with a Yi. She was mentally preparing to walk across a stage in a few hours to shake hands with some old fart with a doctorate and accept a piece of paper which stated that she’d at least accomplished something in the last several years of her life. The last thing she needed was her family to fuck this up for her.

“I— I just wanted to talk to you, am I not allowed to do that?” her cousin’s voice was clear and soothing on the other end of the phone, the slightest bit of offense seeping into his words. Victor had always been good at avoiding escalation, keeping her calm when all she wanted to do was lash out. Truthfully, that had to be the most annoying thing about him.

“Not right now, no. I’m busy, I don’t have time.”

There was a pause from the other end, and to Seok it sounded almost defeated. “Okay. That’s understandable. Just— congrats on your graduation, yeah? Med school’s hard, you worked your ass off for that— I just want you to know that I’m proud of you. That’s all I wanted to say, okay? I’ll take you out for celebratory drinks when you’re back in the country.”

Beomseok found that she couldn’t speak, throat feeling tighter than it did mere seconds ago. Three hours left until she was to walk across that stage. And Vic was the first and only member of her family to say those words.

“Seok? You still there?”

The wizard sniffled, followed by an immediate cringe, just hoping that Vic that didn’t hear that. “...Yeah. I— Thanks. I really have to go.”

“Alright. Knock ‘em dead, I’ll see you soon.”

“Mhmm.” Silence fell over her apartment as she hung up, too dead to the world to realize that the makeup she’d worked so hard on was collecting wet lines down her cheeks.

Typical, really. When was the last time Beomseok had willingly gone to any sort of event? She couldn’t remember— though, it was probably best not to bring that up. Knowing Yoona, she’d spout off the exact date and time that the medic had been last seen going somewhere on her own accord. 

“But you’re already all dressed up, don’t you wanna show off?” Yoona, bless her heart, had really stepped her game up from ‘because I said so’ and was at least trying other ways to convince her. Seok may not be buying it, but she got brownie points for it anyway. The medic was dressed in the most formal jumpsuit she owned, forever refusing to wear a dress for the sake of the Yi reputation or whatever shit her family went on about. Even just buckling the straps of her heels pained her mentally, knowing she’d much rather show up in the sneakers and loose flannel she’d had on earlier that day. She might just be kicked out of the gang for that. Honestly, it would just be better if she didn’t show. But Yoona wasn’t having that.

“No? Byeol’s seen my outfit, you’ve seen my outfit... that’s enough, I think.” The parrot squawked from where he was resting in the corner, acknowledging having heard his name. “See? He wants me to stay home, sorry Yoona! Hope you have a good time,” Seok plastered on a mock polite smile, stepping backwards as if the other might just give it up and let her be. That was wishful thinking.

“Seok, please?” Oh. Were those puppy eyes? “I don’t have a date and I can’t arrive alone. C’mon, be my date...” She’d really stepped her game up. How was Beomseok supposed to say no to puppy eyes and the ‘but I’m lonely’ card?

The medic groaned. “Fine. But if a single person asks me to put in a good word for them with uncle Hyun, I’m getting the fuck out of there immediately, I swear to God.”

The other simply smiled, linking their arms together as she began to half lead, half drag her friend out of the house. “I can live with that.”

Beomseok watched as the typing indicator at the bottom of her messaging app disappeared, allowing her to breathe easy for a moment. Never had she ever wanted to attend a Yi family event voluntarily, and yet when Sangseok tried so genuinely to get her involved in something other than the gram of weed in her bedside table, she couldn’t help but give in every time. Maybe it was something about the way that he was an outsider much like herself, part of the family but not at the same time, that made her so much more likely to genuinely enjoy his company. That didn’t mean that she wouldn’t fight him on any request to meet up with her relatives.

Why were they even still having family dinners in the first place? One would think that a member of The Aegis in custody for what was being officially ruled as a terrorist charge would be enough to make them cancel, if only just for this month. But no. The Yi’s were stronger together or whatever dumb shit they tended to spout.

Beomseok was pulled out of her spiteful thoughts as a knock rang out from her front door, brows furrowing in confusion. She hadn’t been expecting anyone, right? Was there something she was forgetting? Hands tucked into the pockets of her sweatpants, she made her way to the front door, only to roll her eyes as she recognized the face on the other side of the peep hole. “That was not permission to come over and give me the puppy eyes emoji in person,” she commented as she pulled the door open, allowing Sangseok to step inside the apartment despite her attitude.

beomseok is a procrastinator at her core. how she made it through medical school is truly a mystery, though when it’s something she’s determined to accomplish, she tends to work in a somewhat timely manner. over the years, her determination and passion has dwindled, however, and the light in her eyes that she once had for all things medicine and healing has all but disappeared. being a medic is more of a chore for her these days, and so the procrastination hits her hard in non-emergency situations.

henlo everyone, madi here for a super late intro!! this is beomseok, she’s barely a part of the yi family, and she just recently came back from med school in the states to take over as the aegis’s lead medic. i’ll throw some facts under the cut, but for now here are her profile and bio to learn a little more about her. like this for me to come crashing into your dms to throw this trash child at you!!

seok is the illegitimate daughter of the owner of hotel elysium, so even though she’s technically a part of the yi family, her general existence is still lowkey looked down upon. so uhh she highkey hates her family and any member of the aegis who’s not a yi is automatically better company in her eyes

definitely not the most powerful of mages (her mother was human, after all) but she makes up for it in intelligence. not only does she have a medical degree, but she’s also extremely advanced in alchemy and potion making

(tw: drug addiction) she’s been abusing prescription pills for quite a while, and though she’s trying her hardest to stop, y’know... it’s hard, but she tries her best to stick to alcohol and weed. having company when she drinks and smokes is actually pretty helpful to keep her from reaching for the harder stuff

if you disregard her hatred for her family, seok’s really just a sweetheart who will put her own life on the line again and again if it meant that she could save someone
