Here’s another moment I need really desperately to talk about. The video should start at the end of the song, with Frank accepting accolades from the imaginary crowd...and Columbia on the spotlight, having her world shattered.
Being a Columbia roleplayer--being a roleplayer for any minor character, honestly--means having to scrutinize each and every scene containing information pertinent to my muse, no matter how small. This part with Columbia, it’s maybe two seconds long, but it’s two of the most important seconds in her entire character arch.
We know how devoted to Frank Columbia is (and Collie too, but being such a different beast I’m leaving her out of this), but watch her face. Watch the way Frank’s delusion starts to kill her as well. When she went-to, she did so thinking this was Frankie’s game. Frankie manipulating his way out of another tight spot, Frankie asking her for help. She didn’t hesitate. But when he starts accepting praise, nodding along, to an audience that exists nowhere...her heart breaks.
This is the first time she really sees how unstable Frank is. The first time she understands that he is sick and broken in a way she can’t touch, something she can’t fix on her own, something he can’t see and chooses to ignore.
Every action until then she labeled “cruelty,” but this unmistakable proof that maybe it wasn’t, maybe it was something much worse--and in the stage play, this is when she takes the shot for him and tells him he loves her.
I talk about that quite a bit as being a pivotal moment in our understanding of Columbia and the play as a whole but looking at that moment in conjunction with realization, everything (for me, at least) becomes a lot sadder. A lot more poignant.
That moment is Columbia trying to help Frank.
She’s trying to shock him back into reality. She’s trying to let him know she saw his suffering, and no matter how alone is mind makes him feel, he’s not alone. She’s trying so damn hard to help him in the only way that she, some little nobody human, possibly can. And he drops her. And calls her a stupid bitch. And never sees at all that she saw what went on in his head and that she knew how he must have been feeling and that she just wanted to help.
Even after he killed Eddie. Even after he fed him to her. Even after he tormented her, pushed aside, turned her to stone, took away her free will. None of that mattered to her when she saw he was sick and had to ask herself how much of that he did thinking it was a hallucination and that he had done no wrong.
You know he meant it. I know he meant it. He knew he meant it.
But she wanted to keep seeing the best in him, and literally killed her to do so.
the beginning of my rant (see tags)
Now back to it.
So let’s pretend nothing about Rocky Horror was a mistake or a happy accident for a moment. Let’s pretend like all of this was planned all along and like O’Brien was really a wizard.
Look at Frank now.
Childish. Immature. Highly sexual/sensual, narcissistic, ego-centric, volatile, violent, a little murderer and kidnapper and contestably even a rapist/sexual assailant. This is not a character we are meant to sympathize with. We are not meant to like Frank Furter--we are meant to find him charming and disgusting and in the duality of his nature to constantly find ourselves coming back to him to find whatever little nugget, whatever little lesson, O’Brien was trying to impart in him.
But O’Brien “fucks up.” O’Brien lets Frank get humanized for a second too long, for a whole song, and he lets that alien prince be one of the most pitiable characters of the entire franchise all throughout his end while at the same time “demonizing” a previously chaotic-neutral character. WHY?
The argument has been made before that it’s a false reality. We know--thanks to the later materials--that Riff-Raff is a captain of the guard, that he saw himself as carrying out the spirit if not the letter of the law in Frank’s demise, and that he was potentially always a better-morally-aligned character than he appeared through the skewed lens of Brad’s and Janet’s limited experience. This argument puts forth that Frank was being manipulative, trying to talk his way out of death in the only way he knew would ever appeal to Riff. And, yeah. I see and understand that argument. I endorse it.
But I don’t think that’s the only narrative truth in “I’m Going Home.”
That’s yet another skewed and limited point of view, one which takes up Riff-Raff’s side of the argument but neglects to really tap into the mind of Frank. His manipulation is a truth--but let’s really review Frank. What do we know about him? What is pretended from his point of view? Thanks to the flashy nature of the character, the tendency towards exaggeration of emotion even in serious moments (post-”Planet, Schmanet, Janet,” for example), we can safely assume that nothing he says is ever fully the truth. He’s a guarded character, but we don’t know why. We never really learn much of his past, either in Rocky Horror or in the one sequel to mention him, Revenge of the Old Queen. He seems flippant and unattached and clearly demented. He craves constant attention. There is a sense that when he is no longer in the spotlight--the end of ”Hot Patootie,” the beginning of “Planet, Schmanet, Janet,” “The Time Warp” moving into “Sweet Transvestite”--he isn’t happy. He’s afraid. He begins to feel unloved, perhaps, and he lashes out, takes the spotlight by force, holds it with charm and grace and a smile and sometimes a bloodied weapon.
WHY?
Watch his face in those gifs. Watch as his mind cracks open. His primary motivators are manipulation...and fear. And he’s mixed the two beyond the point of recognition for even himself.

This is the best video I’ve ever made
My muse has been injured and seemingly left for dead. How does yours react?
Tin Man Starters
I have a proper name... and when I remember it I will tell you.
What's a head-case?
It's what the state does to re-educate criminals. Remove their brains, and keep them trapped inside their own heads.
Ain't that right, convict?
Whoa, I ain't no convict! And just in case I am, it was a bogus charge, a frame job, I'm sure of it!
Did you hear that?
There is something so *familiar* about this...
You've been sleeping for hours... like a baby with his pacifier.
I thought you were dead.
You know, I may have saved you from hypothermia
I don't know I can't find him. Either they took him too, or he's dead.
Maybe he ran away.
You know you really should do something about that BITTER cynicism of yours
Why? Someone's gotta keep your wide-eyed optimism in check.
I owe you one.
Professional psychiatric help is only a crow's call away these days.
I'd shoot you in the heart if I thought you had one.
You have most beautiful, brilliant, blue-eyes, but your mother, your mother had lavender.
It amazes me that you once influenced the queen.
If you don't have heart, you have nothing.
I don't like the looks of this place.
Untie me, and I might have the last laugh.
All my dad's stories! My parents were from here!
I knew I wasn't an idiot!
What did she whisper in your ear?
He's out of his mind, literally!
Drop it, or I'll blow you into next week.
I'm not saying they called me 'Twinkle-toes' but I cut quite a rug...
Show some respect!
Gotta be careful not to lose your marbles.
