summary: you can see ghosts. and youāre on your last straw
a/n: never beta read. this is based on a dream i had!! a while ago, had this very heavy plot. so perhaps⦠i will write more because my friends seem very interested in the development. this is kinda like the introductory. so the characters would be mentioned :PP i hope you all enjoy the concept.
ever since you were just a wee child. you were able to see things. you had thought the world could see that. how there was an old lady who would hum songs while knitting a scarf that somewhat did not grow any longer. you remembered then. it was odd. you had asked what she was making. where you remembered how the woman had given you a polite smile, a response from the kind yet⦠she felt cold as well, ā for my granddaughter ā that was what the old woman responded with. you remembered how you wanted to ask more. but the interaction was cut short. your babysitter had to tug you away, muttering how it was strange to talk to an empty bench. but you did not see an empty bench. when you glanced back, the old woman watched you go with those gentle smiles that the elderly had when to coo at how cute they were. even when you insisted, all you remembered was how your babysitter said nothing but looked utterly creeped out until resigning that you possibly had some active personality.Ā
there was so many instances you can recall. beyond more than just from your fingers alone. noticing a kind boy who would always walk you home, holding newspapers. you remembered how you spoke the many stories that the boy had spoken. historical moments that had your eyes glittering. you had told your teachers of your findings. but the eyes your teacher gave you⦠it was one of those gazes where they were trying to understand a child while also trying to not be horrified. after that day, your parents had started to whisper and exchanged glances. glances that just spoke of⦠things such as we would talk about it, we would talk to them about it later. like what you said was some playful imagination even though you should of grown. but the ghosts were rarely frightening⦠there was cases you had stumbled upon vengeful ghosts⦠the ones you had encountered were lonely. a student who stood at the bus stop, waiting for a bus that would never come. a child who played jump rope, her hair did not bounce or budge in the wind. a kind man who had reminisce of the days when the school was built over a farm. eventually they would go. some had lingering attachments⦠some passed and thanked you with a gentle heart.Ā
however, you noticed that they were ghosts that were⦠terrifying in nature and in appearance. with irregular looks, sharp spines to even horns. you wanted to believe that it was just a play of the light. nothing too daunting or terrifying. but slowly⦠it became something else. hearing low gravelled sounds that spoke of pure hatred towards human kind or possibly another of their kind. it was haunting. so you had chosen to turn away when you had stumbled upon these⦠monsters. they waited in the crevices and were the most⦠aggressive when it came to human spirits. though, there are those you had encountered who have been nothing but kindhearted and good natured. warning you once when you had nearly fallen in the jaws of a beast. even when they looked scary, one with too many eyes to another with too many limb. but they treated you with care, there was even stories that sounded like they came out of some fantasy storybook.Ā
but by the time you hit your teens, the word to describe you, creepy⦠settled onto you. you watched as your classmates kept a distance from you. ā that one stares at spaces ā, ā that one talks to themselves ā, ā that one gone quiet when looking elsewhere ā. and you kept quiet. you could not explain. so slowly⦠you started to act⦠you start to perform. constantly to yourself. you would try to blink or unfocused your eyes whenever your gaze briefly grazed upon something old or a spot in the forest. you tried your best to not react, suppress every ounce of your being to reply or answer to ghosts. you tried your best engineering your life, coding every expression and reaction to normalcy. of course, it worked⦠well mostly. you would end up slipping up and end up falling off the ladder because of a misstep. knowing too much because ghosts would whisper and gossip one another. like watching the living like a soap opera⦠it made you feel like some kind of freak.Ā
now years later, your school days are behind you. years of being normal. living a monotonous life, working some average job⦠lived in an ordinary apartment with beige walls⦠until recently. you had bought a home. the real estate agent showed you a listening ear with a shudder and obvious discomfort. but they were desperate. you can sense that they were desperate. you can remember it. ā it had been on the market for over a year⦠ā you remembered the man spoke with sweat beading on their forehead. ā four previous deals had fell through after the initial inspection⦠it caused the house to drop ā you remembered how it dropped in around forty to fifty percent. you did not need to know why. the house almost screamed that it was haunted by a ghost of some sort. or perhaps many. you were unsure. but a home at that price range? in this modern age? was a steal⦠albeit, you assumed the previous people who viewed the home thought the same thing. but you, as much as thinking about it cringes you out, you were not like other people.Ā
and now you stood in front of your new home. keys in hand. your car parked in its nice and neat space. usually the ghosts never truly scare you. the garden was outgrown with weeds. the tall home was of its time. old with its own type of charm. you took in a deep breath. before slowly walking up the grassy pavement, you were reminding yourself to mow the lawn⦠this home was definitely some kind of a slight fixer upper. one of your hands grasping onto your jacket and the other the key. your eyes were sure you saw something⦠or someone watching you from the top window. a victorian man? he disappeared as soon as you even realised he was there. did he die here? would you know his story when you get used to the home? you were not sure. there were nice ghosts⦠but of course, there were ghosts who were hostile. but they were ghosts. unless they were vengeful and died a horrendous death that stuck to them⦠you found out that they were able to do things like interact with physical objects.
okayā¦. maybe you may regret buying this house. there were five ghosts in the house. there was one that lived in the basement. that you have avoided⦠since your initial move in date⦠which was a few weeks ago. you remember their appearance. tall⦠towering. shrouded in complete darkness. their eyes glowed in the dark, a cyan colour that felt⦠eerie. a mask covered their entire face, reminiscent of those plague doctor masks⦠and their hands⦠their gloves were completely stained with blood. they had a thick russian accent. muttering to themselves, over and over. speaking of⦠your heart beating? speaking about you had lasted longer than the previous owners⦠the moment when their eyes had flashed a glowing red. somehow you knew, the basement will be the last to be renovated in this house. after practically a quick survey of the basement⦠you actually legged it. you went back up and vowed not to go down for awhile⦠even when you can still hear pacing, the sound of muttering whenever you were close to the entry way to the basement. there were occasions you did see him up and around the hallways. so you had to pretend to forget something in the other room.Ā
then there was the man you had seen from the window. he wore an immaculate blue suit, and a top hat. he wore a mask that was split between black and white. he was mainly in the study. but he did roam around. he usually kept the home quite neat. though you started to understand he was a harsh critic. rooms that you had cleaned, you would see him in later on. his white gloves tracing along the surfaces that you cleaned⦠the sound of a ā tch ā could be heard. the disappointment that there was dust upon the white gloves. somehow hearing that just made you feel like absolute crap. from the looks of it, he was one of the hardest to get his approval. he would make some snide remark of your convoluted methods. it felt like a teacher over your shoulder, scolding you over every little thing. you tried your best to ignore him. as he was one of the ghosts that commanded the other ghostsā attention.Ā
the last three⦠tend to be more tamer. but still scary at the end of the day. there was a woman, donned in pink. she had long dark black hair and gentle pink eyes. her movements were graceful and one with a lot more care for the living. she was often seen in the living room or the gardens. she kept to herself and was seen as less scary compared to the other two. she seemed quite gentle and kind in heart. animals seem to not be too wary of her compared to the others. however, the other two⦠she usually spent time with. one was a literal mischievous little shit. he chose to inconvenience you by turning on and off the lights. chose to do everything ghosts would usually do in movies. he was dressed like a green jester. a two pronged hat, with hearts scattered over his costume. donning the colours of green, black and gold. he always seems to be grinning, watching you fail or trip over because he turned the lights off⦠he would roam around the house with no limits, no designated place he truly enjoyed haunting. then there was another tall one. the white haired male, donning a red jester like costume. a three pronged hat, in just black, red and yellow.Ā
he was often silent. seen mainly in the kitchen. watching you cook⦠he always seems sad. always looking off. you do not understand why he does⦠it was the same with the others. they seemed like there was something that was in the back of their mind. it was quite worrying. and that was the only ghosts that haunted this house⦠however⦠you had noted things. blood in their chests. wounds that was possibly inflicted⦠it was making you wonder and question. you want to ask⦠but you slowly realised⦠these were not humans. they never were. the ghosts that you have seen when you were much younger⦠the non human ones. you were fine with normal human ghosts⦠but here you are, a few weeks deep⦠sharing a house with monsters that possibly hated your guts⦠you were not too sure yet what their stance was towards humans like yourself⦠hopefully nothing⦠concerning.Ā
yeah for now⦠you should keep to yourself. if you pretend you couldnāt see them. if you didnāt acknowledge anything fully. just curse the faulty wiring in an old house whenever the green one starts messing with the electricity. doing all this⦠acting like you did not have five roommates that were not contributing to rent or anything truly substantial⦠this felt like school again. where you just had to act. had to pretend⦠but then again⦠what is another few years of this? maybe longer⦠maybe if you continued doing this⦠the ghosts in the home would just become background fixtures. if you just pretend hard enough, you would not even realise themā¦Ā
the thing was it was more easier said than done.Ā
it was a long day already. it felt like the world was conspiring for your downfall. waking up, staring at the brick that was your phone⦠your phone was not charging. it was dead⦠mocking you. you had accidentally stubbed your toe against a door when trying to rush getting dressed⦠and you hopped and hissed in pain. then the drive to work. you were going to be early. but you know, the universe wants to shove a stick far up your ass, you were stuck behind a very slow driver. driving with no discernible emergency, no urgency⦠they were just drifting⦠when you attempted to go around, they sped upā¦and only slowed down when you gave up. this car had made you hit almost every red light. when getting coffee for lunch, your card got declined for no exact good reason. watching it get declined over and over again. you had to count quarters. watching the last quarter just⦠roll underneath a tight spot⦠you were sure you were close to crying. your friends changed the plans at the last minute and did not tell you until they were half an hour. the words burning in your retinas, with a ā i hope that is okay! ā like you waiting for this long was for nothing. you tried to type a response but each one was harsher, that you had to delete it⦠eventually you just set it down. because whatever you were going to say was not going to be nice.Ā
you were having the most horrendous day. in your kitchen as you were cooking. in the corner of your eye, the pink eyed one spoke with the yellow eyed one. it was a nice chat. you stood there. feeling a migraine just developing. your hands pressed against your forehead. feeling the pinch of annoyance. trying to just push out all the pain from your head⦠and then⦠a flicker. you cracked an eye open⦠the faint rhythm of the light switch. on. off. on. off. on. off. you knew who it was. you have been trying to ignore them for a while. you kept saying you can live through this even if it was annoying. however today⦠this evening⦠you truly had nothing left. no single patience⦠the migraine⦠just bubbling in your head. if this happened one more⦠on. off.
that was it⦠that was fucking it.Ā
your head was throbbing, everything ruined. you let out a scream that had started with a grumble before slowly becoming a growl to a scream. just every single unfair insignificant issue had just stacked up piles on piles. you whipped your head over to the green man who stood by the light switch. ā fOR THE LOVE OF GOD. WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?! ā you had practically screeched. the pink eyed and yellow eyed ones had their eyes widened. as the green one blinked. standing there as you were maintaining eye contact with him. he stood there shell shock. he did not know what to say. usually he had seen humans hit their limits. start yelling and throwing things⦠however⦠this was different. completely different because you, the human, the new owner of this house was looking at him. maintaining eye contact with him⦠you can see him.
ā oh? looks like⦠we have an interesting development ā the green eyed one, harlequin quirked a smirk.Ā
