Aerith speaks between a dream of a future and a dream of her own death, and neither feel quite real or even lucid especially now. She holds her sibling’s hand in hers, tongue in cheek, then stuck straight out. Her adolescent angst has no meaning now. Her life has been relatively easy, compared to Seph. She hopes they get that. That it’s all just a joke. That she’s never been able to take anything seriously, just like when they were children. She pulls a flower out of the garden, dirt sticking to the veins of its root. She sticks them whole and fleshy, soft, in Seph’s hand. A reflection of a normal, silly childhood that never was, one where they could throw astroturf in each other’s laps and yell at each other to stop.

isn’t it really cute how sephiroth calls cloud a puppet all the time when sephiroth has been a puppet, a tool, his entire life even after he thinks he’s broke the metaphorical strings pulling him along? isn’t it cute that even when sephiroth thinks he found freedom he is essentially just a puppet to an eldritch horror’s will? he strives towards reunion, just like the rest of the puppets, but in a super evolved kind of way. he is the next evolutionary step for jenova. he wasn’t an individual as a test subject, he wasn’t one as a shinra soldier, as a war hero, and he certainly isn’t an individual after everything else.

The use of Judaism and the name of God in FF7 goes to show that writers should always be careful about how they approach or use religion in their works, and how we as consumers should be aware of what is so important and sacred to many people. (Glares at Stephanie Meyer). Tbh you have a right to be upset about how Square Enix used your faith and twisted it for the purposes of their own story, and it should be talked about.

i think you’re right, but i need it to be said that judaism isn’t just a religion, it’s a culture. it’s heavily heavily entertwined with a religion, and many jewish people are still in disagreement about what it should be classified as, but there are many jewish people who are not religious. its hard to seperate the religion from the culture, but to boil it down to only a faith is an injustice. anti-semitism isn’t just focused on the religion but everything about the person. their nose, their habits, their jobs, their way of speaking. like, of course in this instance what was taken and changed was something involving the faith. but i just need it to be known to everyone that no matter my faith, i will always be affected by anti-semitism. i will still be told i should be thrown in an oven. they didn’t care if you were practicing or non-practicing during the holocaust, you still had your citizenship stripped away from you & you were still sent to camps.

in regards to that post, i just want to say... i have said it before that it makes me uncomfortable how square enix used jewish mysticism and warped it for ff7s narrative, but really what i should have said is that i truly, truly, believe that what they have done is culturally appropriate something that is sacred to a lot of people who practice judaism to this day, and something that led to the persecution of jewish people in the medieval era -- something we have never had reperations for. something that people hear about in england and think “no, not my england”, instead of acknowledging it, instead of acknowledging that one of their most famous buildings was specifically built to imprison jewish people. i felt that it would upset people to know that i was upset, i felt that i would be dismissed for my frustration. it is not okay to me that they took something sacred, the revelations of God, and warped it into a villian trying to destroy the world. they took one of the names of God and warped it into the mega evil, an eldritch horror that’s entire goal is to devour. these are things that are sacred to judaism as a religion, and part of the belief system that lead to direct persecution. idk i don’t have anything else to say, besides i just kinda wanted to open that door up and try to get people to notice and see that. you don’t have to agree with me, but understand that this is coming from someone who is jewish... someone who’s experienced too much anti-semitism, and micro aggressions, and is just slightly frustrated that this is never discussed.

as roleplayers, we all like to tout that canon is whatever the fuck we make up. we point out each and every flaw in a piece of media we personally believe is morally abhorrent to our OWN marginalizations and world views, or just that doesn’t treat OUR favorite character right.

but when people who are marginalized in ways other than that which you experience—Do You Listen?

do you try to tell them ‘it’s not a big deal’? do you try to debate them, to defend ur favorite piece of media, tell them that u love it, and that it couldn’t possibly be wrong since u love it so much, or it’s so popular, or bc u trust the writers, bc nothing u trust or love could possibly intend to be anti-Black, or anti-semitic/islamaphobic, anti-Asian, lesbophobic, transphobic, ableist, fatphobic?

or do you Listen?

it’s not enough to simply be critical of media or fandom in the ways that you find easy to swallow.

real allyship means listening to perspectives outside your own, learning historical context. you can’t POSSIBLY know every historical and cultural context to a minority you are not a part of. you haven’t lived their life. you have a google machine and nothing more, and while it is important to google shit when you can, and to educate yourself it’s also important that when other people speak up, when they go about their day, posting about their opinions, their culture, the INSTITUTIONAL and cultural marginalizations they face everyday—you listen, you watch, you learn from real people the way that only people nowadays can on this wonderful internet from learning from the marginalized people they follow.

do you participate in shaming someone for feeling wronged?

do you tell someone they are wrong to feel hurt?

that their hurt is not real? that they are imagining it? making mountains out of molehills? being too sensitive? being unrealistic about what to expect?

all these isms against marginalized people are systmeatic abuses that hurt them psychologically and emotionally, that are part of societal systems of belittling and gaslighting people into feeling crazy for even expecting any better from their media, from their family, from this world.

are you part of the problem?
