“You saved me,” said the pirate in disbelief, “but how can that be?”
“I’ve heard the legends, and read the tales,” he spoke aloud to himself, walking cautiously forward, “the sea maidens..”
“Are you not the vengeful spirits of those poor wenches drowned at sea? Borne of bitterness and hatred? Lying in wait for any drifting seafarer, so that you might drag him to his watery grave?”
This was the truth Jughead had always known, and yet, as his words came to a close..he knew it was false.
“No,” he said softly, “I think not.”
With a shake of his head he sank to his knees at the shore’s edge, squinting into the fog in the hopes that he might obtain a clearer view of the sea maiden and her beauty.
In all this time the maiden said not a word, much to the young pirate’s dismay. She merely stared silently up at him, a gentleness in her enchanting gaze.
How he longed to hear her speak. The thought of what it might sound like danced in his imagination, torturing him.
It was then that he recalled something he’d heard as a boy. It was said that alongside their thirst for blood, sea maidens were, at heart, conceited creatures. There were rumors that a man might gain favor with a maiden were he to appeal to her vanity. Or, so went the rumor.
Desperate, Jughead decided to try. Softening his features, he spoke gently and earnestly to the sea maiden.
“Words,” he started, “so long I thought them my faithful friend, and ally.”
“But I am a fool. For they have betrayed you, and so, they have betrayed me.”
At this, the sea maiden gave hint of a smile, moving an inch closer to where he kneeled upon the shore. It was a game, he knew. And a dangerous one at that. One false word could mean certain death if the rest of the rumor was to be believed. But dangerous so a game it was, it was a game he was all too willing to play.
Heartened by the maiden’s response, he carried on, “Yes, a fool.”
“Demons of the deep, so they called you, and so I wrongly believed.”
“But here, now,” said the pirate, leaning further beyond the shore, “my eyes see not a demon,”
The maiden moved closer then, the pirate’s heart skipping in his chest as she did so.
Now only a breath apart, the boy might’ve gasped at her beauty, were he able to draw breath at all. The maiden studied him silently a moment, her eyes raking over every inch of his face before finally, she smiled.
