Lily James for Harperâs Bazaar 2019
Lily James as Cinderella Cinderella (2015) Dir. Kenneth Branagh
âI think Iâve got quite a thick skin and I appreciate criticism â when itâs constructive. But itâs important to remind yourself to take risks, thatâs when the good stuff happens.â
A Tisket a Tasket || Rosie & Penelope
At the end of every day, Rosie had a deal with the baker, that whatever was left to spare was hers to do with what she liked. And so, with a basket in hand, she headed for the orphanage, a skip in her step as she pictured the look on the faces of the children when they saw how many pastries sheâd managed to snag. Theyâd be delighted she was sure.
In any case, it was nice to get away from her duties, to simply do something for her own pleasure.
Entering through the front door, she called out, hoping wherever Penelope was, sheâd hear her. âPenny! Penny are you here?â She said, closing the door behind her and moving through the building popping her head into the rooms periodically with a testing âPenny?â
âWe will need new blankets, and send the ones in the launder to the local seamstress to mend. Thereâs been talk of a storm coming from the sailors at port. I want warm blankets in no later than tomorrow. Weâll not have the kids catch their deaths of coldâ Eleanor punctuated her tasks by handing the parchment of paper to the faun behind her.
âYes miladyâ the faun said. âAlso, Queen Lucy has sent a messenger requesting that we make known any other needs that we have. She will happily compensate.â
âIâll make my way to the palace day after next then, but send a messenger today so that she is awareâ
âRight away mildayâ the faun replied, bowing and hurrying off to complete his tasks. Penelope turned to complete the remainder of her tasks when she spotted a perky blonde poking her head around in the various rooms along the hall.Â
âI spy with my little eye, a little maid who seems lost!â she called out cheerily.
Perhaps Penelope wasn't in right now? An odd thought but it did happen, it was hardly as if the dryad was a recluse. But at the fifth door, she was beginning to think she'd have to head to the kitchen and wait there... she could be of some help.
The sound of Penelopes voice halted her hand from the last door for inspection and she spun around with a wide smile. "Penny!" Came her exclamation, and she ran up to the Willow with a hug. It had been too long since she'd seen her. "I was about to give up hope of you being in!" She said.
"I'm not lost, I know exactly where I am. Question was where you were. Look I brought some sweets for the children." She held up the basket with a grin which was childlike.
"So we're 'beauties' are we?"
âWell no harm in a little flattery now and thenâ
âNever harm as long as one is free. Though uh⊠I would think youâd prefer more oaks than apples. In terms of trees I mean.â
âNo I like either trees just fine. Though apple trees are better sinceâŠ.they canâŠâ
âWait. Just what are you gettin at Rosie?â
"Whatever makes you think I'm getting at something? I'm not getting at anything, I'm fairly sure..."
"Though I suppose I was under the impression there was a young man-- tall, blue eyes, chiseled looks? I don't know why but I affiliate you and he. Something about sailing..."

Rosie was doing her regular chores, a hum in her throat as she pulled down the curtains in the guest rooms in order to wash them. Rolling them up, she placed them in the basket she brought with her, honestly not looking forward to carting that thing around once it was full, the material was heavy when it was in abundance. But, at least once she was done she could get her lunch, and that was a reward she was looking forward to.
âUpon one summers morning, I carefully did stray Down by the walls of Wapping where I met a sailor gay Conversing with a young lass who seemed to be in pain Saying âWilliam where you go I fear youâll n'er return againâŠâ
The silence of the corridor was pleasant, and she rather enjoyed the way the walls echoed, leaving her attention completely focused upon it. Though when she came back down to the regularly used hallways she quieted, humming softly to herself as she avoided others on her way to the washroom. And then it was back to relative quiet.
Her footsteps halted when the new voice cut in, and she slowly turned to see the source. He was handsome, sheâd never deny it, though why he was talking to her of all people was surprising. She chuckled, looking behind her playfully to see one of the many wolven guards walking out of the kitchen.
âNow I donât mean to contradict, sir, but uhâŠâ she leaned toward him with a whisper. âThatâs not a âmissâ. Though his name is Fenrir, if youâre still interested I can always introduce you.â

Barkley guffawed, boisterous and loud. His eyes sparkled with glee at her quick witted style and her sharp tongue. It intrigued him, calling him forth to push a little more- to see how the lines of appropriate and inappropriate blended together in her mind. A healthy scandal was always good for the soul.
Sobering up, he left a smile tugging on his lips and craned his neck to get a better look at the wolven guard. âAre you sure thatâs not a miss, my lady?â His lips puckered up into a whistle form and then he blew out a long, low breath. âBecause, damn, thatâs a nice ass.â
âIâm Barkley Appleton, by the way, and I do believe youâre the maiden Iâve been chasing in all my dreams,â he stated, extending a hand out towards her.Â
"Quite sure, Mister Appleton. I've seen his pack of females, no mistaking a sire for a dam." Rosie replied, letting the basket rest on her hip. "Though I suppose if you're into that thing..." she trailed off and blew out a breath, a little amused that a wolf had just been wolf whistled.
She should continue on to the washroom, she had work to do, but it was a little break that she wasn't overly opposed to having. Besides, retorts to flirtation was a little fun to come up with, she was used to it by now. Comments made from the opposite sex used to fluster her, but she'd learned over time to just play along. It was better than blushing.
She chuckled, shaking his hand briefly. "A pleasure. Though if you're chasing me in your dreams, perhaps I'll take that as my cue. I don't usually run unless I have to, so I must have a good reason for it." Then with a smile, she turned on her heel and headed toward the washroom again. The damn basket was getting heavy.

The couple he had met at the tavern were right. The inside of the castle was indescribable, with its large rooms, countless of halls, and the gold engraved in it all. Barkley walked casually through the corridors, with no particular reason to be there than that he wanted to be. It was another lesson from his dear mother; rules should only be based on what one wants. All other rules did not apply.
So, truthfully, Barkley didnât know whether or not he was supposed to actually be wondering the corridors, but he also doubted kings and queens spoken so highly of their people locked their subjects up for exploring. After all, wasnât the tale he heard from the other trees that all of their reign started from their own exploration and adventure?
Eh, he didnât care that much about their story, only that working with Mr. Thorne and making their weapons would help seal him an official name. Something more than a wanderer, the son of a infamous wanderess. Â
As he walked around another corner, he spotted a young girl- a servant he assumed- and playfully gasped, bring a hand over his heart. âOh Aslan, I didnât know they allowed such beautiful works of art out of the gallery these days. Forgive me, miss, but I must ask your name?â

Rosie ⊠22 ⊠Human ⊠Galman ⊠FC: LILY JAMES
Biography:
In every war there are casualties, both physical and mental. For Rosie, her father was the Duke of Galma during the latter century of the Witchâs reign, making many deals with Jadis for the security of Galma. It was a decision which caused for him to be labeled as a traitor, but with his position of power being too strong at the time, no one stood against him. Rosie was seven when the Witch was killed, and her father deposed a mere year later, his crimes bringing him from a place of power to a place of total shame as every one of his dealings was put forward, and he was taken to trial though pardoned by the new monarchs at the Cair, who preferred forgiveness. For the Duke said he had repented, and was deeply sorry for his actions, for though he thought he was doing what was best, he had quickly disliked it but no other options.
But Galma was not as forgiving, for he had done much to the Galmans to please the Witch, including the hunting down of many âtraitorsâ and saw to their executions. He claimed he had repented, but Galma did not believe it. And so, her father spiraled into despair. She was twelve when he was found dead, though she never found out whether it was by his own hand or by anotherâs. The Galman Courts ruled it as a suicide, and given his state she could hardly argue. She was thirteen when she was advised by Duke Brandon to leave, it was too dangerous to stay in Galma, and so she fled to Narnia.
In Narnia, she was relieved to know that no one knew nor cared of who she was, and she was able to acquire a job at the castle as a servant, a humble job but one she was most grateful for. Sheâs happy with it, and sees it very much as an opportunity to get away from the legacy of her father. That being said, itâs rare indeed for her to speak of her father in anything other than vagueryâfor she wants, very desperately, to leave the memory well behind.
Personality:
Rosie is an optimist, preferring to keep her eyes on better things than to give into the hopelessness her father had, lest it also lead her astray. She is a gentle soul who has great compassion, for she has seen the cold cost of cruelty and unforgiveness. She believes that no matter what, there is always a third option, and that in the face of danger or difference, one should always stick to what they truly think and believe is right. Perhaps if her father had done so, things might have gone very differently.
Relationships:
Fmr. Duke Brandon of Galma: Although there is much about Galma which made Rosie leave, the strongest influence was without a doubt the new Duke of Galma. Though she barely knew him, Duke Brandon is one whom she sees as a friend, for without him she might have been in great trouble in her home country, and for that she is most grateful.
Lilia Rose: A fellow servant in the castle and a friend, Lilia is someone that Rosie very much admires for the strength she doesnât recognize that she has. They might have been closer, but with Rosies secrets, its hard to be completely vulnerable with Lilia, despite the fact that she doesnât think that sheâll ever betray her trust. Maybe one day sheâll bear all to the other servant⊠maybe. Â
Eodel: Of all of Rosies acquaintances, none is more eccentric than the archery master. He is the one she goes to when sheâs feeling out of sorts, sure that no matter what heâll be able to help her, heâs that sort of friend. Though she would never admit it, she very much sees Eodel as a sort of brother she never got to experience having.Â
Sister Penelope: When Rosie first left Galma, she was alone and unwanted, and being so young she wandered the streets for days without help. That was until she found the Orphanage of Sister Penelope, and was taken in for a time until she could find a place to stay permanently. During this time she struck up a relationship with Sister Penelope, and she is the only one who knows the fullness of Rosies past. She visits the orphanage now, from time to time, to see how she may be of service, both as a friend and out of her gratitude.
