seo yeji & cis female. ⇢ SERAPHINA DARLINGTON-SONG, age 26, graduated Gilchrist University in 2017 as an INFORMATION ENGINEERING major. SHE was born in DAEGU , SOUTH KOREA & has been living in SEOUL , SOUTH KOREA working as an UNDERGROUND INFORMATION BROKER. SERA is known to be ADAPTABLE, HEADSTRONG, STOIC & OBSTINATE and that might be because SHE is a SCORPIO. ⇠ eve. 23. gmt +8. she/her.
TL;DR she’s heavily inspired by the shadow broker in the mass effect series and a character i wrote up long ago that never reached its full potential. seraphina could probably start wars with the wealth of information she has in her fingertips, and she probably knows everything your character has done, especially if it leaves a trace online.
pinterest here ! & playlist here !
BACKGROUND.
born to wealthy investor for a father and an archaeologist for a mother. youngest of three and the best of all of them. augustus and serena, while brilliant in their own right, couldn’t compare to the sheer magnitude of seraphina’s genius. however, they’re more sociable and agreeable — palatable, really — whereas seraphina is quite content with just watching from afar
she has everything working for her to be well-known and well-liked among her peers, but seraphina’s an enigma at best, and when she doesn’t budge at the constant badgering at the lunch table, people got the hint. and so she suffered the silence as her only company.
this one girl in her class took a seat beside her one day, but she didn’t really speak. not for a few days. and then one day the girl asked if seraphina had a pencil sharpener she could borrow, and that was the start of it. easy, and not all at once. her name was iris.
the two girls were practically joined at the hip, always at each other’s homes often enough they earned an honorary seat at the dinner table. iris was very dear to seraphina, and as they grew older, she wondered if her feelings for iris was how everyone felt towards a friend.
while she was asking serena about it, they were overheard by their father. a v traditional man. had to give up a lot for his family to be where they are, and this — thing his daughter had managed to get caught up in, is an aberration. to violate the ideals he has held on as a structure for his success was a threat to his legacy. he whisks his youngest off to boarding school at the earliest chance.
of course, being the newest addition to the student body of institut le rosey is a big benefit to the institution. however, due to her ever-present vigilance, it becomes apparent to seraphina that the administration pays a particular attention reserved only for her. ah. her father must have made a considerable donation to the schools funds for her to have spies tailing her every move. something about protecting the legacy, seraphina guesses. fine, she figures.
she throws herself in a multitude of extracurriculars to fill up the spaces in her mind. turn herself into something of value. archery, aikido, fencing, even becoming an equestrian just to cover up whatever “flaw” her father thinks she has. but it’s still all he sees.
there’s an anger that grows in her like a seed. and what comfort could a mother offer leagues away in a dig site, covered by sediment and dust? facetiming with her siblings is a monitored affair, and she stops calling them after a while. it didn’t seem right for an instructor to be breathing down her neck while she asks augustus how dinner was.
so, seraphina turned her genius into a knife. make sure no one will be able to find her footprints online. it takes a little bit of staying up late trying to learn code, but eventually, she makes something work.
GILCHRIST.
it’s her project that earns her a scholarship at the esteemed institution, as well as an invitation to the Gravediggers for her potential to contribute as a fully-fledged member. she navigated most of the initiation trials with a flourish, and though she was reluctant at first, seraphina has come to find her own sort of family during her stay at gilchrist, even becoming president for a time
she’s a steady shoulder to lean on, if that’s what you needed. a voice of reason, when she can spare the few words. seraphina becomes fiercely protective of what the society had meant to her during her years as a student and will go at any length to protect its interests. but above all she upholds the bonds its members make for themselves, their loyalty to each other. though not many were able to witness her leadership, it makes itself known in the society’s history like time wears itself on an artifact: respected by those who came before it.
once she has graduated, she tries to maintain her connection with some members, though respects a choice to be left alone.
PRESENTLY.
she becomes a consultant for a lot of companies as a day job, and in her free time, she refines her personal projects. over time, she notices a pattern emerging like an impression, and seraphina uncovers it to discover a web solely controlled by an unknown entity, with many agents acting according to its will
seraphina tracks the signal to reykjavík, in a penthouse that ought to have more security for what it’s worth. a man sits in front of numerous screens, and he almost looks relieved at the sight of her. “good,” he says, “it took you long enough.” and seraphina comes to know this man as her mentor, noah.
( tw: death ) he passes due to complications with his health a couple of years later and he leaves his information network, operations, and agents into seraphina’s care. no one is aware of the change in leadership. noah has only begun preparing seraphina to oversee such an expansive responsibility, and coming into it suddenly is a tall order, but seraphina wants it. the finer details about morality in her type of trade is something she will have to determine for herself. it is far too easy to do the wrong thing. ( end tw )
though she knows the university has closed down, seraphina can't afford sending an agent to uncover the finer details behind the vagueness of the letter sent to her out of respect for the society's privacy, so she sends herself
and being an underground information broker has lead seraphina leading two lives, and she’s very careful about keeping those two lives separate
will be online after classes today !! i’ll also be getting to plotting, so if you haven’t liked my prev. plotting call, feel free to like this one and i’ll hop in your IMs c:
Jun gave a small hum of agreement as she looked over to the other people in the group. It was odd to be back and to see everyone of all different ages mingling with each other and it was even stranger to feel the different atmosphere’s. “Oh frowning definitely wasn’t a requirement in my time,” She chuckled. “Maybe it comes with age and I just haven’t got the memo.”
the woman looks more youthful than her age assumes . “ it shows , ” seraphina comments . “ you are ms. jiang , right ? you don’t seem as … sourly as the rest of your class . i’m presuming you’ve had much better luck with using the gravedigger’s connections after your graduation ? ” as for her , seraphina hasn’t needed any help ; her genius is something people sought after , and work has never been hard to come by . “ that is a lovely shade of lipstick , by the way . where did you get it ? ” admittedly , seraphina’s not the best at small talk , but it looks more and more like she’ll have to find her own form of entertainment this evening .
“Would you turn down $100,000?” Anna questioned, running her finger across the rim of her glass absentmindedly as she looked over at the various people moving in and out of rooms. The money had never even crossed her mind, but she wasn’t so naive as to see how that much money could make a great difference to many people’s lives. After all, $100,000 was a deposit for a home, a new car, school fees. “Mmm” the brunette mused, gaze settling on one particular young woman who had been frowning from almost the minute the dinner had started. “Do you think they know something we don’t?” But of course, she understood that some people weren’t quite as grateful to the Gravediggers as she was, and given the mysterious circumstances in which the university had come to close, it did make sense that people would be just that little bit wary.
a simple lift of her shoulder is all seraphina gives as her first response , coolly taking another sip of her wine . “ i could , and i’m very sure quite a number of our most esteemed alumni can afford to , as well ; still others earn what our allowance would be in a day’s work , maybe even double . ” their purposes for returning are much more interesting , at least to seraphina . for she is one of them . her business of exchanging secrets for other favors , bigger secrets is proving to be quite the lucrative venture . money hasn’t been a problem in her youth , and certainly won’t be a problem in the future . people will pay anything for information , will pay any amount to reinvent themselves into a new person , the list goes on . seraphina hopes she’s been making the right calls since her predecessor’s untimely passing . “ everyone always knows something others don’t , ” she says , tilting her head back in consideration of her thoughts . “ but the older alumni seem to be too busy with themselves to even pay the younger graduates any attention . i wonder how strong our web of industry connections really is . ”
her shoulders , too , are tense. but haesoo enjoys the us vs. them mentality. even after all these years since she lived in this very manor , she likes to be a judger , to prick and prod at the perceptions of others . and doesn’t everyone crave acceptance a little bit ? even in the eyes of a young girl such as seraphina — who she’d met minutes ago , only. “yeah . really makes you feel like you missed something , doesn’t it ?” hae takes a sip of her own drink , eyeing the cynical small groups of mingling gravedigger alumni. she might as well be right among them , a textbook over-thinker but thorough through & through .
seraphina juts her bottom lip at the other’s judgement . “ not at all , ” she replies , setting her empty glass down on the table . “ i get the feeling they’re in over their own heads . it has only been a few hours since our arrival , anyway . getting worked up over nothing seems to be a waste of my energy . ” her eyes gauge her tablemate , haesoo caldwell . a respectable woman in her field of expertise , no detail too noteworthy to grab seraphina’s attention yet . maybe haesoo is too good at her job —— turning into a mirror for others to look into themselves . hm . “ how has life been since leaving gilchrist ? everything you thought it would be ? ”
The air of the night settled something tense through the manor, eyes dark and empty smiles displayed for those they think want to see it. Charles sits amongst it all, but there’s no tension in his shoulders, or strain in his words. A sunken stone in reckless rapids, unfazed by the currents. An easy smile even falls to his lips, a light chuckle at his attention directs to the woman beside him. “ You don’t seem to hold the same frown as so many others. Perhaps they were just eager to Dr. Gilchrist, or maybe it’s not the social event of the year they’d hoped. ”
charles is a comfortable presence , a confidante she could trust with her theories and hunches . she raises her glass at him and says , “ neither do you .” then , her eyes turn back to scan the crowd of people to hopefully spot the doctor , but finds him nowhere among them . his absence doesn’t draw alarm —— she knows as well as any that people have their reasons . besides , they’re in safe haven . if threats haven’t made themselves known now , they will reveal themselves later . “ it’s been a while, charles . but are you not eager to see the doctor yourself ? ”
Matthew wasn’t sure how to respond to Seraphina’s statement - it was laced with judgement and what felt like a misunderstanding of the reality of the situation. He followed her eyeline to the tense people she watched, knowing that if he were not sat beside her he would be subject to the same assumptions. He made a conscious effort to try and loosen his shoulders - rolling them backwards a few times hoping they’d drop and his grip on the wine glass would stop being such a vice. “I think you are being rather harsh. Did you not feel any apprehension about returning? I know that since being here absolutely nothing has happened to make me feel any better than I did before… I mean, we still don’t really know why we’re here? Isn’t that enough of a reason to be frowning? You have no idea what they gave up to be here?”
his movements do not go unnoticed , but seraphina says nothing of it . that he has caught offense is already telling for her . " if observations are harsh , then i suppose so . " she takes a sip of her wine , thinking what he might have left behind to pursue the summonings , curious . such a reaction , too . " and , no , matthew . i came on my own . "
for an after party , it's quite a drab affair . members from the same graduating classes predictably huddle together in a smaller group , while others seem quite keen on avoiding even looking at each other . exes , bad terms . " we can just as easily leave , you know , " she points out , tilting her head to lean further into the padded chair . " i don't think the doctor intends on holding us here against our will . " among the crowd of faces , she recognizes some more clearly , especially if they've ( unknowingly ) crossed her path . who knew a gravedigger graduate would actually pay good money for stock market predictions ? " anyway , there are others who come here for their own gain , so forgive me if i'm not totally sympathetic . " as much as she believes there’s some good in every person , it would be foolish on her part not to acknowledge the darker parts of their character .
“Uncertainty is scary for some people,” Silas replied, usure why he opted to write himself out of that situation. He was equally terrified, convinced there was definitely more to this whole thing than what they were led to believe. “You just chill with packing up your whole life and moving back here?”
" who said i left anything behind ? " there's a smile along her features , attempting to make light of the situation . she straightens up in her seat to make space for one of her seniors , patting down the space next to her . " and i guess that's true , but coming here isn't a forced choice . i would think that seeing the same faces would bring some familiarity and comfort , but —— " over his shoulder , two members seemed to be in a heated argument . " it seems that is not the case . "
his question had been a leading one , she remembers . " what about you , mr. morgan ? leave anything behind ? " she knows there's an autobiography as anyone would , but not much else . she could ask an operative to do some digging on his profile , but seraphina has some respect reserved for the members of the society . lets silence stay where silence stills .
It took Phil a moment to realize that the girl sitting next to him was actually talking to him, or was it more at him? He did not really know her, and though he raked through his faded memories, he couldn’t remember a time when he met her. Would he have remembered? He wondered. Probably.
“That amount of money was enough to make anyone feel force to come, I think.” Why was he engaging her? He looked exactly like all of them she described, serious and jailed in his failures, forced to come in order to get one last free pass. “And they did ask us to dig a grave as requirement. I guess that must affect some people.”
she recognizes him as the pianist , among the dossiers she's collected . her wrist tilts her wine glass ever so slightly , as if to examine the liquid inside it . " some of them come willingly , " and she counts herself as one . " others have no real use for the allowance . yet , they are here , all afraid , all the same . "
a member passes by in front of them , muttering under his breath and crossing his arms . he glares at her as she catches his eye , but seraphina doesn't look away . eventually , he shakes his head and makes a beeline for the bar . " we really need to work on our alumni relations , " she remarks coolly with a sigh , turning back to look at the pianist —— phillip , his name she now recalls . " anyone who steps foot in this manor will quickly realize we're all too caught up in ourselves to afford working together . and whoever's made quick work of our reputation will know how easy it is now to ruin us completely . " the end of the gravediggers is called for , if the o'neill case turns out to be an inside job , but otherwise , the society still holds its potential . after all , they know sacrifice means ; to see such legacies go to waste is pitiful .
CLOSED: for @davidwilkes
LOCATION: the swimming pool room
even with his back toward her , seraphina knows it's him by the heavy slope of his shoulders , the bow of his neck . perhaps it's the dead silence that has drawn him to the water's edge , or maybe he has come upon the indoor pool all on his own , with his feet to carry him while his mind remains far away . whatever the case , there's an impulse to place a hand comfortingly along his elbow —— let me walk this path with you , as a friend would do . and she does , approaching the lines of his silhouette illuminated by the pool lights . " david , " her voice is quiet , dulled by the somber air . " i am sorry , " is all she could manage , these words overdue . years overdue , in fact , and while she has paid her respects in her own way , it is much , much different in person .
hi , guys !! wasn’t really able to do much today aside from reply to ims since i had to pull a lot of meetings , but class ends at noon so replies are sure to follow !! love u all i hope you are doing well c: <3
Maggie fell silent for a few seconds, considering the other’s words. Irrelevant felt like an important word. It was difficult not to feel irrelevant when so many had returned. The heirarchy that had been established in their individual years were thrown. She didn’t like feeling out of place. “Why do you think he has called us back?” she asked. At the time the letter had felt so personal, but now so many of them were assembled she realised she was just another cog in one big machine.
She licked her lips anxiously, “Individuality has never been less important,” she said. A dry smile crept onto her face. “What are your purposes for being here?” Her deflective questions made her feel safer.
so many questions . but seraphina keeps her lips pursed in contemplation as she pretends to take an interest in a fabergé egg encased in its glass containment . " the strength of the pack is the wolf , and the strength of the wolf is the pack , " she replies thoughtfully as she moves about , heels clacking on the polished tile . " perhaps the doctor has called us to determine the future of the society now that the institution has collapsed . if such a future is even sustainable given our history . " the deflection is apparent , even heavy-handed for someone as observational as she — what secrets do you hide , margaret astor ? but fine , seraphina will play along . " as long as we are kept in the dark about our summoning , my purposes remain undetermined . " there is an air of practiced insouciance , light as air . there is no emergency yet , and jumping the gun would be a terrible waste of her faculties . " why ? did you think there are different reasons for our return to the manor ? "
“i think most people are upset because they don’t know why they are here,“ he explained calmly, right hand resting on top of a sleeping maya’s head. “as soon as i arrived, all i heard were complaints and people demanding to know what was happening. it seems odd to me that some people agreed to come here while acknowledging that they had no idea of why their presence was required yet feel they have a right to force people to give them answers they don’t have.” santiago had grown incredibly frustrated when someone kept pressing an employee until he intervened. “you are right, some people do look like they had no other choice but to return.”
quite right . “ explains why i saw someone badgering a chef with a barrage of questions . ” then she makes a sound , caught somewhere between a scoff , a laugh , and a bark . “ as if the staff would know any better . ” the walls of the manor remain familiar to her , tainted by the darker parts of the society’s history . now upon her return , the shadows seem to appear like a void of their own , standing taller on the wall . without a doubt , there is something insidious afoot , but it doesn’t take a genius to guess that . she wonders , absentmindedly , if she can manage to sleep soundly tonight . at least , santiago is fortunate to have maya watching over him . “ the letter said six months , ” she continues , looking down beyond the rim of her glass , at the pool of wine . “ i’m trying to fathom a reason for the timeframe , though my theories aren’t exactly friendly . for what it’s worth , the fear is reasonable ; a manor full of influential people and mysterious circumstances ? something will go wrong , santiago , i am sure of it . ”
“ you would think they were forced to come here, ” she remarks, tilting her glass of cabernet sauvignon towards her lips as she follows the tense lines of people’s shoulders, the gazes cast askance. they probably were; it’s so easy to retrieve message correspondences, encrypted or otherwise, though she doesn’t say it out loud. anyway, seraphina doesn’t have any incentive to do any digging, not yet, not when there’s no real benefit to having them. perhaps it’s also because their alumni relations leaves a lot to want, but seraphina would think that their society has a more unified front. “ and so serious. i don’t recall frowning as one of our requirements going in. ”
It felt different to be back than Maggie thought it would be. Part of her had been hoping that the familiar halls of Ghilchrist Manor would fill her up and overwhelm her senses so she couldn’t think. She had been hoping that all the memories would come flooding back and she could find comfort in them, but instead she felt emptier than before. She had yet to decide if that was a good thing or not.
Dinner was stifling. A room full of people who had become insignificant. The absence of Dr. Ghilchrist made it seem like there was nothing to bring them together but a common curiosity. A common curiosity for a man that seemed more like a ghost than a person. She slipped out of the dining hall to take a moment to breathe, gravitating towards the entryway.
She’d always been so curious about the statues that stood there. She had once had a plan to try and get a bust of herself put on display. It seemed a little silly now, she doubted they did the founders any justice. She heard footsteps and looked over her shoulder. “Happy to be back?” she asked, her tone bordering sarcastic.
dinner had been a relatively quiet, if tense, affair. everyone eats a meager portion of their plates ( if they could stomach it at all ) while waiting on bated breath for the appearance of their most esteemed. of course, he never showed up, and a hunch tells seraphina that behavior is to be expected. after all, wasn’t it a vagueness and too many questions that brought most of them back to their roots? but she doesn’t budge; her time in the society wasn’t filled with bad memories, much like the others, shifting in their seats. seraphina gauges the others, as she always has, and finds some familiarity with the ghost of her position.
she finds the one earliest to leave their gathering unintentionally, and her eyes follow the statues the woman is staring at. donations, some of them. others, lasting contributions of a gravedigger’s talent. there’s a rodin somewhere in one of the rooms, but it’s only a pitiful duplicate. now, the woman. seraphina knows of her, at least, the same way she knows of everyone meandering the halls of the manor: through her information network. “i do not think the doctor has called us here for a celebration,” she responds in kind, nodding in acknowledgement and yet keeping a cool face. “and how we feel about coming back seems... irrelevant to our purposes, here.”
hello , hello !! taking on a heavy load for the rest of the week , but rest assured i’ve been making my way through some of the intros already ! if you guys wanna plot something , my ims are always open !
