Veterinarian suicide
I know sadly there are a lot of veterinarians that sadly have committed or tried suicide. Finding out that this is such a major problem breaks my heart. I saw a post about sadly losing a vet to suicide I lost it though. So I wanted to write about what I have seen behind closed doors.
After the veterinary and staff helped save my dog I decided to help by volunteering. I already decided that I wanted to do some career with helping out animals anyways.
During my first week I cleaned out the cages, feed the animals, and did normal volunteer stuff. After awhile I noticed things, the stuff people don’t see behind closed doors.
The people who would stay late, when a person was late to pick up their dog.
The person who would cramp them self in a dog kennel to soothe a dog getting surgery.
The vet who did paperwork while kittens ran all over their desk because their mother had just died.
The staff members who brought a nightlight for the dog that was afraid of the dark.
The staff member who made a playlist for a cat because it calmed them during their rehabilitation.
The vet tech who got peed on by a great dane and didn’t get angry or yell but laughed, while we all took pics.
There was those silent pauses also.
When an animal didn’t make it.
The vet that tried to keep from crying when they couldn’t save an animal but the owner not shredding a tear asked for a refund.
Putting down a dog that couldn’t eat because the owner let maggots eat away at her mouth.
Saving kittens that were put in a bag and tossed from a car into traffic.
The heartbreak and distraught on the face of a vet who had to put down a happy healthy animal because there was no room and resourses.
And so much more.
Each of these things motivated me to wake up earlier and volunteer more. I wanted to help lighten their work load. I sent the medical team and staff funny animal pics to brighten their day. Watched amazing animal rescue videos with the staff and together would cheer and clap. I sent them thank you cards, food and gifts. Trust me all the staff had their desk or area full of thank you cards, gifts and pics from different people. They loved the updates on how someone pet was getting better because of them.
The medical team, staff, interns, and volunteers go above and beyond their job requirements.
So volunteer at your local animal hospital or shelter, even if it’s once every few months. Donate to help them. Send them thank you letters and gifts or just tell them thank you. They don’t have to cost a lot. Store bought or homemade they will appreciate it. Even thank them for when they tried their best but sadly could not save the animal. I guarantee you they fought and did what they could.
These are the things I’ve seen behind closed doors and I wanted to say to all of these wonderful Veterinarians, vet techs, vet assistants, staff, volunteers, and others Thank you, you are appreciated, there are people who are thankful, and you are loved.
