        she   looks   slightly   lost  ,   hugging   her   books   to   her   chest.   the   verdanas   had   made   the   decision   to   move   to   new   york   for   her   father's   job  ,   but   melanie   was   more   anxious   about   the   hero   aspect.   it   had   been   eating   her   alive.   did   the   people   of   calendo   think   that   she   abandoned   them  ?   she   shakes   her   head  ,   trying   to   banish   the   thought.   but   she   stops   when   she   sees   a   group   of   kids   all   wearing   matching   shirts.   biting   her   lip  ,   she   shrugs.   might   as   well   see   what's   going   on.   coming   up   next   to   a   boy  ,   she   hears   all   of   them   talking   about   spider - man.   looks   like   if   she   did   any   heroics   here  ,   at   least   she   wouldn't   be   the   only   one.     ❝    you   know   what's   going   on   here  ?   i'm   little   new   &   i   can't   tell   if   they're   just   passionate   or   about   to   raze   the   school.    ❞

peter    rarely    participated    in    the    conversations    about    spider    -    man.    it    wasn't    that    he    didn't    enjoy    listening    to    his    peers    gush    over    his    abilities.    no    ,    he    relished    in    the    praise.    but    there    were    only    so    many    times    you    could    say    '    he's    cool    ,    i    guess.    '    before    they    begin    to    wonder    why    you    don't    love    him    as    much    as    they    do.    it    was    stressful.    having    everyone    around    him    obsessed    with    his    hero    -    self    …    it    was    almost    too    much    sometimes.    

suddenly    ,    there's    a    girl    at    his    side.    she    appeared    visibly    lost.    confusion    coating    her    dark    hues    as    she    watched    the    group    before    them.    their    discussion    had    gotten    rather    heated    —    they    were    constantly    wondering    the    identity    of    their    idol.    so    far    ,    none    of    them    had    guessed    correctly.    nor    would    they.   

 ❝    them    ?    ❞    he    questions    ,    hand    vaguely    gesturing    at    the    group    of    kids    just    a    couple   feet    or    so    in    front    of    them.    ❝    spider    -    man,    ❞    he    murmurs    ,    ❝    they're    obsessed    with    him.    ❞    they    might    as    well    be    his    own    personal    fan    club.    they    flocked    to    any    new    images    of    the    red-suited    vigilante    like    flies.    when    he'd    first    taken    on    the    spider    -    man    persona    ,    he    hadn't    anticipated    this    kind    of    recognition.    but    ,    really    ,    who    could    ?
