It was darker in the Devildom. Sunlight didn't deign to bless the skies here, and the nighttime gleamed with an unearthly darkness, darker than velvet or oil, something uniquely Devildom. It was too dark for humans to grow, to survive.
The whole place was poison to them, the darkness, the food, the demons, everything was a threat. The place wasn't built for them.
Yet, somehow, like Persephone in the Underworld, she lived. A goddess of springtime, soft and sweet like the world above, come down to the realm of Hades, mouth stained with the juice of six pomegranate seeds.
She was everything his world threatened to harm, and it terrified him.
He'd left her defenseless against it, once.
But never again. He knew better now, and he'd spend eternity making it up to her.
He didn't deserve her, he knew. But he wanted her. He wanted her like a body wants air. He'd wanted her since forever. (He'd wanted her first, his traitorous brain whines, he'd wanted her before any of his brothers, before they knew about her connection to Lilith.)
He was her first man, her first pact, she was his most ardent defender, and she was his first love.
He loved her. More than anything.
She's not for you, a small, pragmatic part of his brain says, she's not for you to love.
He'd throw away his entire fortune, set fire to Goldie, and be at the heel of witches for the rest of time just to hear her laugh.
He knew she loved to. She was so cheery and bright, always with a silly joke for his too serious elder brother, a bon bon for Beel, a new book for Satan, time to watch anime with Levi, compliments for Asmo, head pats for Belphie, and endless kindness for him.
She'd been the first being in all three realms to defend him against his brothers.
"How could they say that to you!" she had fumed, the first time he had run away crying, "As if it's funny! It's not funny! It's heartless and cruel and too far-" she'd hiccuped then, and had begun to cry.
Nobody in the world cried for him, except maybe Lilith, eons ago, but he couldn't really remember.
This, though, this small, weak human who took on all of brothers, weeping for him? He'd remember her kindness. It was hard to forget, she was coddling him all the time.
She was kind when his schemes got her in trouble, when he needed help with homework, and she was even kind enough to forgive him for letting Belphegor hurt her. (He didn't think he'd ever forgive his younger brother for that. The fear and pain on her face haunted him daily.)
She had so much sweetness for him, and he loved her for it.
He loved her so much he almost couldn't stand it. Saying her name caused a supernova in his chest- it felt like universes were made every time he met her eyes.
Of course he didn't deserve it- he'd been an angel, once, and even then, he hadn't deserved her.
She didn't need his greedy little heart.
She had it, though, regardless. She had it wrapped around her little finger, he'd do whatever it took to make her happy.
He didn't deserve anything more. (but heaven knew how much she made him want to.)
