Johannes Bornlöf’s Scribbled Letters was playing over her headphones as Dawn made her way from the training room towards the kitchen. Titan’s Tower was still a place so strange to her, filled with the oddest mixture of bad memories and laughter. She had spent all morning training, going over routines again and again, anything to quiet her mind. Now her stomach was growling so loud it almost drowned out the piano tunes in her ear and finally she gave in and – “Woah”, she turned on her heels, both arms raised in one swift motion. Her reflexes had always been good. But in that moment they were not good enough and the pillow passed through her fists and right into her face. Dawn stumbled back, for a quick heartbeat confusion flooded her system with adrenaline as she blinked, trying to understand the threat. Then understanding settled in. “How dare you?”, she picked the pillow up from where it lay on the floor, anger and disappointment playing over her features, “I could have hit you, Udyati. You think attacking armed people is a game?” She shook her head, stepping closer to the younger girl. “Truly, I expected more of you.”

Only in that moment, when she was close enough, did she let the facade slip, revealing her anger to be nothing but an act, and tossed the pillow right back at the unsuspecting girl, before dancing backwards on her toes, rushing for the safety of the kitchen counter. “Now tell me who started this madness. Gar? Don’t you dare throw that pillow at me, too”

Dawn’s smile goes unnoticed but her strict tone does not. Instead, Udyati winces and stays seated. And her eyebrows knot together as she - in her very underrated opinion that no one ever listens to - pieces it together. “Except when it’s actually tomorrow, there’s something else that needs to be done, or someone else who needs your help, so you tell me the same thing, keeping me inside and clustered to the couch. Until I give up. Anywhoozies, why does Rachel get to come? She’s even younger than I am!”

Dawn bit her lip to keep the sigh that bubbled up her throat from tumbling out. She knew that any sign of annoyance on her part would only make this conversation harder. “Listen”, she dropped onto the couch beside Udyati, elbows on her knees and fingers entangled, “This entire thing is personal. For Rachel, I mean. These guys, they call themselves the seven sins, and... They are dangerous. And I am scared, I really am. It would help me immensely if there is one less person I need to worry about.” Dawn was determined to build a connection with Udyati, like she had done with Rachel, to help the younger girl. She would not fail her, like she’d failed Jason. “Can you do that? Help me out and stay here?”

A look of confusion crossed her face before she rolled her eyes, shaking her hair out of the way, “when I said I had sex with a green lantern I obviously didn’t mean the one old enough to be my father.” 

“You got me confused there for a moment, that’s all”, hands both neatly around her cup Dawn did her best to keep from smiling. “And I am not one to chase a man away simply because he’s a little older.” She was curious, she’d admit that without hesitation, but Dawn also did not want to force her friend into spilling any tea.

              “Trust me, I get it”, hands on her hips and head slightly to the side Dawn smiled at the young girl on her couch, but her tone was strict, as sure of herself as she had always been. “The urge to do something? To get out there and help? Staying here is torture, I get it. But we are doing out there is dangerous, especially tonight. So maybe you sit this one out and we train tomorrow?”
