gonna take a page out of @neridoes' book and ask the same question: if udyati was canon in marvel / dc, who do you think she'd be shipped with?

“Ah, so you are well acquainted with Hinduism and its gods,” Venera mused, her tone rich with intrigue rather than simple politeness. “That is refreshing to hear.” There was something almost admiring in the way she looked at Udyati now, as though the conversation itself had sharpened her interest.

“Hinduism is one of the oldest surviving religions in the world. Ancient, enduring… alive in ways many belief systems can only pretend to be.” She tilted her head slightly. “No singular founder, no singular doctrine, no single holy book demanding obedience. It breathes. Evolves. Contradicts itself beautifully.” A soft hum escaped her. “I have always found that fascinating.” Her gaze darkened with amusement.

“It is rare to meet someone who speaks so openly of religions beyond the so-called big three. A shame, truly. Hinduism and Buddhism carry centuries of philosophy, myth, blood, beauty, destruction… and yet modern society treats them like decorative curiosities rather than living things.” Her shoulders lifted in an elegant shrug. “Though perhaps that is the fate of many old gods. Some survive. Others are forgotten.” Then, just as easily, she dismissed the subject with a playful wave of her hand.

“But I am not here to preach.” A smile curved slowly onto her lips. “I am merely here to explore.” The way she stepped closer made her intentions impossible to miss now. Boldness suited Venera far too well; curiosity even more so. Especially when directed toward something beautiful… or dangerous. Her fingers lifted almost absentmindedly, brushing lightly through one of Udyati’s curls before letting it fall back into place.

And then her eyes drifted to her lips.

“My apologies,” she purred. “I did not mean to come across like some lust-stricken fool.” Though the look in her eyes suggested she was not particularly sorry at all. “I ought to buy you a drink first. Or perhaps dinner, if you prefer something a little more dignified. Though between you and me…” Her gaze lingered shamelessly now. “I suspect neither of us has ever been particularly interested in behaving with dignity.”

"Quite. To know yourself is to forget yourself; to forget yourself is to be awakened by all things." A nod of the head. "It's also refreshing that you know your stuff. Not very many people do. Honestly, if I had a euro for every single time someone gave me a frowny face when I mention having read The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, I would be, well, quite well off, I think."

And speaking of being remembered and being forgotten: "Where did yesterday's water go? It has flowed on. The river remains."

From her shameless gaze to the way she brushed lightly through her hair, Venera's intentions were clear. Getting attention like that was a heady thing. A rush, really.

"I... yeah, we can do dinner." A beat. "As for the whole dignity thing, it sort of comes with my whole thing. I've got a reputation to uphold. It takes someone who knows what they're doing to get me to behave in an undignified manner."

"Yeah, me too. I'm glad my mother sent me here. It helps meeting other supernatural creatures much easier, even if my sister and I are far away from her." The supernatural community in Japan was easier to find others like themselves, but the one in California wasn't. Not that they aren't all secretive. It is just hard when you do not know who's who in the community so you can connect with others at their hotspots. His mother has better connections in Japan than she did in America.

"I pick and choose when I am a party person. It depends, really. Sometimes, we do the dinner to celebrate thing instead." He tilts his head to the side. "Korean barbecue karaoke bar? Those are fun. There's all kinds of things that you can do to celebrate things."

She runs a hand through her hair. Nods her head. "Yeah, I can imagine." She's always wanted to go to Japan, though. Somewhere on her phone, there's a list of all the places she wants to go to - most of them warm and sunny - and Japan is definitely near the top of that list.

"Very true." A nod and then: "If you ever want to give that a go, you know where to find me, right?" The answer to that's very likely a yes because she's got her usual haunts: the library, the gym. Places where she can feel the sun on her face. You know, stuff like that.

searching & searching through outer space / an o.ff c.ampus verse through udyati's eyes:

envies the frick out of the STEM people because you can do science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics without your brain breaking? dang, wow, okay, her brain is not made for any of that!

she's a HASS girl: humanities, arts and social sciences all the way!

crossmedial communication is what she's at briar u for (even though the field is saturated as heck).

sort of exists on the fringes of everything: she's not popular at all.

can be found in the library.

can also be found at the gym.

or jogging around campus.

can and will talk your ears off about kalari.

likes sweet drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) but doesn't drink all that often.

only shows up at parties if her friends go too.

very disciplined: she goes to bed on time, shows up to class on time, stays on top of her homework. never sets a foot out of line.

on the other hand: she hates most, if not all, of the teachers. yes, she's kind and courteous towards them - she can work with them if asked and she listens to what they have to say, but she is very aware that those people are not her friends, they are not here because they want to see her succeed, they are here for their paycheck and nothing else.

yes, she's still your favorite friendly neighborhood humalien aka a human-alien hybrid.

and yes, the doors are still a thing. how do you think she gets to class on time?

Venera’s expression shifted ever so slightly at the pronunciation of her name, as though she were tasting it rather than hearing it. Udyati. There was something ancient about it. Something that belonged in temple smoke and silk banners rather than spoken so casually into the night.

“Elevation,” she repeated softly. “How fitting.” Her gaze lingered a moment too long, dark eyes tracing the other woman with unsettling attentiveness before a faint smile curved onto her lips. “And here I thought you merely looked like the sort of woman who walked with her chin tilted toward the heavens. Turns out you were named for it.”

The comment about Venus drew another subtle reaction from her, amusement, perhaps, or intrigue.

“Mm. That is often the tragedy of humanity, isn’t it?” she mused. “People expect revelation to arrive violently. Fire in the sky. A voice from the clouds.” Her head tilted slightly. “Meanwhile the divine has always preferred subtler disguises.”

There was something almost deliberate in the way she said it now, like the words carried two meanings and she was allowing Udyati to decide which one to follow.

At the mention of awareness, Venera stepped just a little closer. Not enough to invade, just enough for the space between them to begin feeling intentional.

“Oh, I never assumed you were unaware,” she murmured. “Women like you rarely are.” Her eyes flickered briefly toward Udyati’s chest, her hands, her throat, not crude, but observant in a way that felt almost intimate. “People who carry something learn very quickly how the world reacts to weight.”

Then came that answer, a person.

For the first time, Venera smiled properly, though it remained impossibly enigmatic.

“Are you?” she asked softly. “How comforting… Though I confess… I have never been particularly good at believing things at face value. You say you are a person much like me. And yet I cannot decide whether that is meant as reassurance… or a warning.”

"I suppose my Amma knew from the jump what kind of kid I would turn out to be." Someone with a huge heart. And a hassle, in regards to school. But that's neither here nor there.

A nod and then: "Sure is, yeah. And they do. Akashvani aside, my favorite stories remain the ones where Lady Durga slakes her thirst with the blood of her enemies and Maa Kali dances upon demons. And also her husband, who is not a demon."

That is to say: sometimes you laugh so you don't cry and sometimes you dance because you can't afford to stand still.

At the mention of awareness, Venera stepped a little closer, and if it weren't for her training, Udyati would have stepped back at this blatant invasion of her quote-unquote 'bubble'.

Then Venera's eyes flickered briefly towards Udyati's chest, her hands, her throat. "My eyes are up here, Yavana," she said, amused. "And I suppose that you can pick. After all, I am not the only one here who wraps her words in silk hiding steel." They're much more alike than one would care to admit.

“The grand scheme of things is rather vague, open to interpretation, really. One can reshape it to their own design, if they possess the vision to do so. But if I’m being honest… you don’t strike me as a wandering soul. Quite the opposite. Appearances can deceive, but aura rarely does.” There’s a softness to her tone, though with Venera, sincerity is always something to question.

“You’re not wrong, however. There are many who drift through this world lacking either devotion or understanding. It’s… unfortunate. There’s something bitter about wasted potential, whether they realize it or not. To think one might have blossomed into something extraordinary, and simply… didn’t.” A faint smile tugs at her lips. “But I’ll spare you the ‘live, love, laugh’ philosophy. You’re observant, I appreciate that.” She hums quietly, her gaze sharpening just slightly as Udyati lingers on her name.

“Thank you. Though I’m not entirely convinced my parents didn’t simply name me after the Soviet space program, Venera program has a certain ring to it, doesn’t it?” A flicker of amusement crosses her expression. “Still, it likely traces back to Veneris ‘of Venus.’ I can’t say I’ve ever set foot there, though. Probably for the best. If those probe images are anything to go by, it’s far from the oasis people once imagined. Funny, isn’t it? To romanticize something so distant, only to discover it’s… inhospitable.” the irony wasn't lost on her though. “And don’t apologize. Knowledge is never something a woman should diminish. It suits you.” Her voice lowers, almost thoughtful now. “Your name, though… it’s beautiful. Udyati. It sounds divine, like a forgotten goddess, or perhaps a forbidden world yet to be charted.”

Then, a tender silence followed by a shift.

“I didn’t seek you out,” she continues, quieter now, but far more deliberate. “I simply… came across something that demanded my attention.” Her eyes linger, more intent than before. “Are you even aware of what you carry? That aura of yours… it’s striking. Like lightning in the middle of a summer storm.”

A beat.

“…What are you?”

"Udyati means to rise or to ascend or elevation, or even readiness, depending on the context." Her voice is a soft thing in her throat and the way she pronounces her name is soft too: uh-DYUH-tih, she says. "I figured it's a bit of both."

When Venera speaks of Venus being inhospitable, Udyati chuckles, like it's funny, almost as if she wants to say you'd be surprised. "People don't really know where to look," is all she says about that. "Even when the answer's right in front of their nose."

She runs a hand through her hair. "Which is a great segue into me saying, yes, I am. I would be a fool not to be aware of what I carry." Considering she carries that which other people cannot or will not.

A beat.

"I am a person." A daughter, a friend, a lover. Someone who practices martial arts. "Much like you." It's a quiet way of saying you show me yours, I'll show you mine. To a certain extent, anyway.

“You ask a lot of questions. Is that something you do often, questioning anything and everything? Does it really matter who I am? I mean, in the grand scheme of things, does anyone truly know who they are at their core? Do you know who you really are? But I will humor you, my name is Venera. A pleasure to meet you. And what did they name you?”

"Someone has to," she shrugs, "all of my teachers never liked it either." 'It' being her tendency to ask. To query. To question anything and everything and everyone. "But that's neither here nor there."

"I think very few people truly know who they are at their core in the grand scheme of things. I think you're one of those people." And Udyati, too, is one of those people as well. Instead of saying that, however, she nods. A silent way of saying yes, I know who I am.

"Venera," she repeats with a hum. "That's pretty - they named you well. It's a name of Latin and Slavic origin. Derived from Venus, the Roman Goddess of Love." A nod and then: "Sorry, I'm a bit of a nerd for anything linguistic. My name is Udyati. Most people can't pronounce it, though. So they stick with Ud. Yati is fine, too."

She runs her hand through her hair just to give herself something to do.

"Excuse me for being so forward but... why did you seek me out, specifically? Alderesch and Rotown - as a whole - is not in your backyard, so to speak, is it?"

Raiden cannot stop the grin that appears on his face when she hugs him. He has to admit that she is cute, especially with how nice and enthusiastic she is.

"You're welcome. I'll let you know when it's time for me to do a new one." He's not quite ready to put himself through another trial yet. Maybe he will when they're on summer break. It would mean he has an excuse to go back to Japan for the summer.

"She's passed her immortality down to my sister and I too, apparently. Or, at least, we will age very slowly. I'm not too sure yet." He laughs as he shrugs.

"Well, I like to have a party to celebrate. Or my mother takes me to dinner. It depends, honestly."

"Either way, I'm glad I'm gonna have someone I know and trust that's still gonna be with my down the line." Immortality - functional or not - is going to be heavy. She's going to look the way she does right now and a lot of people around her will not be around her forever.

"I've never been much of a party person," she admits, "more of a dinner to celebrate kinda person. Though I do like to drag my friends out to that one karaoke bar - the one where they also do Korean barbecue. There's this pink drink they have - alcoholic, but sweet. Can't remember the name but I do remember pouring two to three of those things down the hatch last time I went there. Spent the majority of the night giggling."
